lurker n. One of the `silent majority' in a electronic forum; one who posts occasionally or not at all but is known to read the group's postings regularly. This term is not pejorative and indeed is casually used reflexively: "Oh, I'm just lurking." Often used in `the lurkers', the hypothetical audience for the group's flamage-emitting regulars. When a lurker speaks up for the first time, this is called `delurking'.

The creator of the popular science-fiction TV series "Babylon 5" has ties to SF fandom and the hacker culture. In that series, the use of the term `lurker' for a homeless or displaced person is a conscious reference to the jargon term.

Hi everyone. I've been lurking for some time now, and thought this would be a good way to "delurk". I'd like to thank all you non-lurkers for providing useful information, insights and entertainment. On behalf of the lurking community, we salute you :D (Well, it's not as if anyone's going to protest.)

Back I sink into the deeps...

ROFL! An actual research study on lurking! I admit it, I lurked here for several months before registering. There are advantages to doing so -- you get a feel for the community, you have some time to learn the rules and regs; then you're less likely to make all the usual "newbie" mistakes and accidentally become a troll (of course, some people are trolls on purpose).

sometimes it better to say nothing, if what you say means nothing.

I know there are few members that wished I did more lurking than talking! Oh well, what's a girl to do?

Hint to any lurkers reading this thread: It is a lot better to lurk than to post hundreds of rubbish posts and disrupt the forum like I did... That said, we are friendly people and we want to hear from you :)
Don't be afraid, we don't bite! (well, some of us don't....)

There wasn't much to lurk at when I got here, just Andy Murray, Chazz, Cooler and Waya debating the best ways to advertise the forum.... oh, and exchanging nipple twisting techniques! :D
