View Full Version : Wanna meet?

Just a quick poll to see if you would be interested in perhaps arranging a UK Meet. In order to find out the interest, please let us know. At a later date we can go into where, when and how much. It is being debated also that we might arrange for a meet with another list.

Please give us your thoughts and suggestions.

I'm thinking we could also try to arrange one on this side of the pond :)

Sounds good to me Mel.

I tried to organise this type of thing an another forum I go to but got shot down in flames.

A day of mini-seminars would be cool. I could teach a section if you like. You could charge a small fee to cover the hire of a venue & maybe raise some money for a worthy charity while you're at it.

Why were you shot down in flames? Did no one want to do it, or was it just not feasible to arrange? If you could offer any advice on how to set this up and let us know what problems you experienced the MAP team would be very grateful.

Thanks Yoda! We would love to have you onboard! Definately a charity could benefit from this - another good reason to do this!

Thats's 1, anyone else?

Mike, perhaps we can try and collar Chazz into organising something over there, unless of course - you're volunteering!? :D

Be great if we can do both that's for sure...

From the people I have talked to on map so far. I'd like to see;

Footwork- from Dave (YODA), a qualified fencer you know!

Weapons- from Mike (Pesilat), the guy can turn a grocery bag into an arsenal!

Grappling- From Freeform.

Kicking-from CKD, Waya & Chazz.

Awareness- From Cooler

Anatomy- By Sticky (Gordon)

MA History, by Kosokun (Rob) & Ozebob (Bob)

Internal MA- Pablo (Paul) & Feiloong

How to win friends and influence people- Myself & Tseek Choi

Actually, I can't go on, there are just so many knowledgeable people here, I could offend by omission.

Love to meet anyone on map, anyplace, anytime!

I reckon a freestyle light continous/non contact tournament would be good too, as well as the seminar's of course.

Yep, definitely interested.

Hmm, if its after May next year I should have my instructor's.

Oh, and out of curiousity who's qualified in first aid?

I'd definitely be interested :-) I don't know about turning a grocery bag into an arsenal ... but I love flexible weapons and do have some material with a bag.

I could organize it but if I did, it wouldn't be until next year because my calendar this summer is rapidly filling up and I'm planning to move later this year but haven't pinned down when yet (depends on what develops with my wife's job situation).

If someone else could organize it for later this year, I would definitely try to be there.

If no one else wants to organize it, though, then I definitely can.

I'd be most interested in doing a mini-seminar day too ... or maybe even a weekend if we get enough people interested.

Bad news HongKongFuey, with first aid qualifications they don't teach you how to perform CPR on yourself. I guess you could get them to teach you first.

Absolutely :-) I guess you didn't get the Private Message I sent you a couple of days ago when I noticed that you live in Longview :-)

So, I see in your profile that you do Escrima. If you don't mind me asking, what system?

If you're interested in getting together sometime, let me know. I'm free most weeks on Mon and Wed. On weekends I travel pretty frequently (this weekend I'll be in Chicago).

If you're interested, let me know here or drop me a line at sikal@yahoo.com

How often are you in the IL area? I am up there two or three times a year near Chicago visiting my family.

I get up there on occasion but not frequently. However, by the end of this year, I should be moved to Louisville, KY which is (compared to TX) pretty close to Chicago :-)

And, if you drive from NC to Chicago when you go, then you probably drive right by Louisville, right?

Likewise, would need plenty warning for a trip to meet up.

I would be up for meeting some of the Edinburgh members for a drink after work one day.

Don't know about doing anything serious like training though!

Cool. I know a couple of guys up there who are top notch people. They're both martial artists. One does Kun Tao Silat de Thouars but has a pretty strong background in Karate prior to the Kun Tao Silat. The other is stationed at Ft. Knox and has a very strong Karate background (knowledgeable in several systems and I can't remember what they are) and has also trained in some Filipino and Indonesian arts (and maybe some Chinese too). Regardless, he's a very good martial artist.

If you get to that area before I move up there and you're interested in hooking up with either (or both) of those guys, let me know and I'll arrange it. If you're up there after I move, then both those guys will be training with me so you'd probably get to meet them anyway :-)

Just thought I'd bring this up again.

So far we have confirmed interest from the following people:

USA
Pesilat
Waya (USA and poss. UK)

UK
Yoda
Andy Murray
KyoKushin Girl
Ckdstudent
Hongkongfuey
Fluffydoc

Is there anyone else out there that would be interested? At the moment its made a 'round' relatively cheap. Let us know so that we can see if we can arrange this meet sometime this Summer/Autumn.

I think that we should all meet up in Edinburgh! Not only is it the capital of God's country but we also have decent drinking hours unlike those who live south of the border! Also have the advantage of having five members of the forum in the one city (FluffyDoc, Spike, FreeForm, Tintin and yours truly) with Andy Muray and Greyghost in the near(ish) vicinity (though they will have to bring their passports with them). We could put four/five people up at our place (Tintin and me) and I'm sure that the others wouldn't mind too much if we needed space for a few others. Thoughts?

Right, lets get serious then UK members! I figure that so far we have:

Mel (Mistress of pain!)
Yoda (Master of grappling!)
Andy Murray (Master of the snide put down!)
Cooler (Master of awareness!)
Fluffydoc (Mistress of beer!)
Silver (Master of poetry!)
Freeform (Master of no-thing-ness!)
HKF (Master of the Go-karters!)
Joseki (Master of... what the hell is it you do anyway?)
Ghostsuit (Master of the web!)
Greyghost (Master of his own destiny, it was either that or cheese!)
CKDstudent (Master of the bizzare!)
Kyukoshin_Girl (Mistress of push-ups!)
Waya (huh? How'd he get on this list? ;) )

Thats enough to start with and I'm sure i can convince more people (Tintin, Spike and half the HWU aikido club to come along).

So places people, times, dates, who's willing to teach, what kinda format.

Thanx

The weekend would be best for me, preferably a Sunday, but with enough notice I can arrange for just about anything. Next week is out though, same with Christmas and around the middle of August. Other than that I'll be starting Uni and quitting work in September, and planning to quit a week or so early to have some free time, so September before the 21st would be great.

Andy Murray
28-Jun-2002, 11:52 AM
Hi CKD,

Well if you want to be sure of excluding me, organise it for September.

September being the month of the devil for me.
Week one move house.
Week two Earls Court in London for a big show.
Week three, try and pack four weeks of sales into five days. Week four off to Minneapolis USA.

According to Waya, the closest map member to Minneapolis is 1,300 miles away. Unless of course you know different...........

Andy Murray (Master of the snide put down!)

I was kind of doubting that anyone would even notice the post - this thread's a *little* outdated by now I guess.. you've probably had a couple UK meets by now I suppose.

Melanie
26-Jul-2002, 06:22 AM
I wish I could say we had Sweeet. We never really got enough interest. If we could get about 30-40 people we could arrange a meet to include a hall/dojo, accomodation, food and drink, etc but its seems a lot of the UK members here already travel a fair bit as several members have already visited other dojos. I expect as membership grows we can start to arrange one for next summer (I hope).

There could well be more people from Canada on the forum, however, not everyone has filled out there profiles or authorised the post facility when they joined, if they don't do this, you wouldn't be able to see their profiles anyway.

LilBunnyRabbit
26-Jul-2002, 07:39 AM
I dunno, I can get a fully matted hall (not that big though) for about £13ph, and there's a restaurant that does a chinese buffet for a fiver at lunch, or tenner in the evening. I'd imagine there's other similar facilities near other people.

We were just trying to arrange a MAP UK meet, I don't think I could afford to fly you over.

Expressions of interest and anyone want to host it. I honestly believe Edinburgh to be the best choice because the highest concentration of members in an area seems to be Edinburgh/Glasgow, we've got a hall and can arrange for plenty of free accomodation!

Come on, offers and suggestions on a post to www.martialartsplanet.com
