So, KickChick and I (and a few other "decision-makers") have come to the fantastic conclusion that an official M.A.P. meet in the New York area would be a worthwhile idea. This is partly based on the U.S. MAP meet poll (http://www.martialartsplanet.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27920&page=1&pp=15), and partly based on the fact that New York is the most awesome place in the world!! (Okay, sorry, personal bias there.)
So, what we need now is some concrete answers:
- Who's going to show up?
- More importantly, does anyone have a dojo of sufficient size, that could serve as a host location? Preferably within a reasonable distance from JFK or Laguardia airports, for the MAP'ers who may visit from out of state. And a reasonable distance from some hip spot, for the afterparty! (okay, that part's negotiable.)
We're looking to have it happen somewhere, maybe, possibly, probably, most likely, could be in March or April of 2006. So, we've got to get a move on it.
Any questions? Toss 'em up here, and we'll iron them out as they pop up. Thanks a bunch, and...see you guys soon. :D
P.S. - Yes, I'll be there, and no, I don't have a dojo we can use. Anyone else?

Obviously it's in my sig I'm from PA, so can't help there.
I'll need AT LEAST 1 month notice, if not two. I will need to make sure my court hearings are covered assuming we're going to try to get together for a weekend. I know I have court every Friday morning, and may have stuff in the PM. So as long as I have reasonable notice, I should be there :D

I think the Maarch/April timeframe was chosen to have it as soon as possible, while waiting until after our usually not-so-nice winter. Again, it's sort of a group vote, but a big deciding factor will be when/where/who our host dojo can be. Volunteers, anyone??
Worst case scenario: We can consider renting our a lecture room in a hotel somewhere. But then everyone's gotta kick in some $$$$.

We are in New York but are about 6-7 hours north of New York City (which is what you seem to mean by "New York").
If interested we have a school in Potsdam New York, which is about 1.5 hours from Ottawa (Ontario) airport and about 2 hours from Syracuse (New York State) airport. There are smaller airports closer (Ogdensburg, Massena, and Watertown) but they may be more expensive.

Hi All,
I'm interested - I was promising myself a long visit to the USA in 2007 for a MA tour - but a quick visit to N.Y. would be cool (money and dates allowing).
Oh, health warning - I'm not your normal 'reserved brit' I'm more like Bart Simpson on Speed - so if you are of a nervous disposition - don't tell me where the MEET is taking place :) :) :)
All the best.

Would LOVE to have you Robert if you could arrange it!
Let's just get our "stuff" together on this ... aand hope for the very best MAP meet! (in the U.S. that is!)

We are apt to have snow into May. I was offering a place to train inside.
Perhaps the thread title could be changed a bit to "NYC" instead of just "NY"... it might ease the confusion (especially for people pricing plane tickets, hotels, etc.)

Don't know if this works for everyone...I am hosting a Tournament February 17-19 at the Atlantic City Convention Center...about 2 hours from NYC but close proximity to AC Airport and PA...We have use of about 130,000 square ft. of space including two rooms of about 5,000 sq. ft. each.We do have plans for seminars in these rooms but won't be used all the time. Check out my thread about this event, there is alot going on!

As another member of the Upstate NY contingent, I'd love to make it. And if you decide you want to shift it up North West a bit, I could definitely provide a facility.

HAs anyone looked into hotels, btw? Are any of the organizers gonna look for a group rate with a local hotel, will other members be willing to host us, or is it every man and woman for themselves, which may be cost prohibitive?

Once we find a venue for the meet I can work that out (I work in travel).
NYC seems to be the area.
There is always Central Park ;) ... as long as the weather is good.
Good to see an interest from members in UK... what an opportunity to check out the city that never sleeps! :D

Any MAP members train in the city or know of a facility we can rent for a Saturday afternoon?

Except maybe flying in while holding hands with Superman. (Sorry, I just saw that movie the other day, for the first time in a while)
It really does sound like we can expect a solid turnout. Say, here's a technical question...what exactly goes on at a meet? (You'd think that's something I'd know already, before trying to help organize one, but...nope).
Are we taking it upon ourselves to do demos/give lectures? If that's the case...I'd be more than happy to bring some weights and talk about something, so people can actually see how to do a Full Contact Twist.
I guess I'll start investigating possible rental locations, just in case no one has a local dojo. Bear in mind, though, that we'll need to split the costs incurred, somehow. I love you guys to death, but I'm not picking up the tab. :D

AND
there have been a few MAP Meets held in the past. Look through the threads here in the forum.... most especially at the most recent held in June organized by Mel. She did such a splendid job.... I'd love to have her come over and help us out with this one!
Take a look at the poster of the event. Many of the instructors are MAP members. Now if you are not an instructor, you still have something to offer. Share whatever knowledge you have and learn from the others.
I'm personally leaning towards April if outside and if we can acquire a gym/hall /ma dojang in the city then March.
Now we can make this as simple or as technical as we can. As Yoda explained in the above ref. link ...
"A "MAP Meet" is a gathering of MAP members and their friends designed to bring poeple together to share their knowledge and have fun. It is a physical manifestation of the MAP Community Purpose as defined in the MAP Terms of Service..."
We certainly can charge an entrance fee but any profits incurred MUST be donated to charity.

Once we get some definite attendees, we then look for members to volunteer their "expertise" in the various styles.

I personally think it would be worth switching to May, in order to allow Geordies to attend!
I'm currently only active in Tai Chi Chuan, due to knee problems (but am willing to try any MA technique/style my body is capable of doing). I am in no way qualified to teach any portion of Tai Chi, but I could demonstrate the warm-up routine we use, which is by far the best warm-up I have ever seen (it warms you up, makes you sweat, but doesn't hurt and doesn't wear you out. :) )

I can do a few demos as well. Depends on where I'm at in my rankings, I may be able to get in a weapon demo, otherwise just open hands. And of course, I'll have my gear, too. Hopefully I'll have my style's Leopard form down by then...

Anyway, I'll contact Chris once again and get him over to this thread ;)
I also have a training center here in my area with instructors willing to demonstrate in the styles of Jun Fan Gung Fu, Jeet Kune Do , Kali,Silat, Pekiti Tirsia Kali Arnis, Eskrima, Kun Tao Dumpag and Integrated Grappling Systems.

I just thought I'd remind everyone that there's still the issue of location. Having instructors or demos planned is all fine and dandy, but it sure would be helpful to have a place to perform them in.
Ask your friends. Call your Senseis. As for how many people to expect, what would a reasonable guesstimate be...20-30? 70-80? Based on this thread (though it's only been up a week), I count 15 people so far. Figure even if everyone shows up (I'm optimistic on that) and brings a guest (significant other, personal massage therapist, whomever), that's 30 right there.
Otherwise, whip out 'yer wallets (to cover renting a location).

So far, we've gotten offers from upstate, and that's about it. Shen Yin lives in the Bronx or Brooklyn, but I haven't seen him post in a dog's age.
Where the hell are all the NYC MAPers?
I really would rather have this in NYC. Easier to fly in and out of (or take the train!), and more to do...
Does anyone know of any local dojos which might be interested in hosting us? Anyone live in NYC and want to pick up the yellow pages? Or even Hoboken or Jersey? Local high schools may be willing to give us access to a gymnasium as well; that's how the local TSD school hosts its big tourneys.
Of course there's always the gym/health club/boxing club option? Anyone work at one with enough space for us to bum?

Have your peeps call my peeps, and we can all have some peeps for lunch. (mmm, marshmallow goodness) Sorry, got sidetracked for a second.
To the topic at hand, I'm here on Long Island, an hour or so from the city, but I'm sure I could find something. The only problem then is more travel involved (from the city/airports to out here in the...suburbs!!.) So, it's just trading one obstacle for another.

Tastefully done BaiKai. You know, 'Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.' :D On to the details!
I think we should keep it in the greater NYC area too, if possible. As a resident of the area I can assure you there are tons of possibilities (it's New Yawk- duh!), but we just have to figure out how to turn those possibilities into options. I don't think that the gym I go to would be ideal because it is often crowded with the 15 people that attend class, and it is open 7 days/week. Plus it is a MT gym pretty exclusively… but I could always ask. I don’t even think they’d be interested in a self defense seminar (BaiKai) because it is a sport gym. However, there must be someone out there in MAP-land who can at least ask a sensei/sifu type. With that said…
Questions:
(a)What kind of space are we looking for? Mats? Bags? Dummies? A ring? Black/marker boards? Multiple rooms? Showers? Lockers? Gym facilities (weights, etc)? What (rough) volume of people?
(b)What cost? Obviously we want cost be zero. However, is there any sort of threshold- $20/attendee? $50/attendee? $100/attendee? I'm sure no one wants to bust the bank, but Gotham is a very expensive place, so all comers should be ready.
Possible Areas
Manhattan- There are plenty of dojos and MA centers around. I live on the Upper West Side and work downtown. There are lots of places dojos for all types of MA, especially Chinese and Japanese MA (and the ubiquitous TKD). Also, some of the Universities have clubs- I know Columbia has Judo and Boxing clubs, and I assume NYU and maybe BMCC, CCNY, and CUNY too. Also, what about a YMCA? That sounds like the perfect place- facilities, space, location… the McBurney Y is centrally located and easy to get to.
Does anyone here have ties to:
-Columbia University judo/boxing?
-Any other University/college club?
-The New York Athletic Club (if you do you can probably finance everyone’s airfare as well :D )?
-Alan Lee’s Kung Fu/ Wu Su?
-Anderson’s MA (I don’t know if this space would be right)
-Any of the BJJ schools- Gracie or Machado? (ie- Renzo Gracie, Marcos Santos…)
-Any of the various Ju-Jitsu schools (New York Ju-Jitsu, any of the uptown Kempo/Kenpo/Karate schools).
-Any YMCA (specifically the McBurney YMCA downtown- 14th st between 7 & 8)
Outer Boros: As you can imagine, there are lots schools, and I don’t know as much about them. I’m not the best authority, so I’m not even going to try. Queens, especially LI City, has lotsa schools. The Brooklyn and Bronx too. Staten Island could work, but it is a little tricky to get to, especially if you live somewhere that isn’t, well… Staten Island.
Other Areas, not in the City
The Island: If nowhere in the 5 boroughs works out, Long Island is a good second option. I know that there are many MAP people on the Island, and space is probably easier/cheaper to find. The LIRR is a piece of cake to use too, and however aggravating the LIE is, it is still basic and well marked. So… someone who lives out there can offer ideas. Somewhere close to MTA/ mass transit would be ideal.
Jersey: Jersey, like the Island, is imo not a bad fallback for similar reasons- mass transit, easy NYC/airport access, lots of roads (too many), etc. I know less about Jersey than I do LI, but hopefully we would be in North Jersey, and somewhere nice (read: not Newark, Camden… ;) ).
Connecticut: Take it away KickChick! Seriously, CT is another option, but not as good as LI/Jersey- a little farther away, a little less accessible. However, if the venue and price are right, I’ll gladly hop on the train.
Beyond the greater tri-state area: Thomas you offer is very generous. Thank you, bless your heart, but I just think Potsdam is a bad idea. It’s difficult to get to (for those who, like me, don’t have a car) and it is far away from the city. If this is an NYC meet, I just think it should be closer to the city than that far upstate, if only for logistical reasons. I, for one, probably can’t make the trek out there and back in one weekend- I would be in the car/ on the train for most of two of the days of the meet. I imagine that the others in the area are in a similar situation (BeWater, KickChick, others…)
As for other areas… I guess I would say that the absolute furthest away we should be is the extent of the NYC MTA system. That is easy, affordable, and accessible- this includes the LIRR, the PATH to Jersey, all the trains upstate to Kingston (or wherever they stop). If anyone else feels differently, say so please.
Okay, that’s a lot of typing. Maybe the best next step is to figure out who should be doing what in terms of prep. I’m very happy to scout locations and just generally snoop around on the weekend, but I can’t do so in the near future (canoe trip coming up, out to CT for this weekend, you know how it is). Other people? What locations?
I also have another idea that is kind of an ace in the hole, but I don’t think anyone will be in a better position than I am to find out about it so I will pursue it and report back.

oooH Cuchulain82 .... no fair you got me tremendously curious! Whatever it is I hope it pans out. Whatever you can do to scout out a facility on your end would be very much appreciated and thanks for your help!
Good suggestions especially the YMCA. Perhaps a contact there to check on rental fee.
I say 25.00 should be the minimum ... plus or minus a few bucks. Not sure how many will ateend yet..... any profit after paying for facility will go to charity.

hint hint... any takers? This is the point in time where people start saying "I'll check out a, b, c in my area. So, how about this- I'll check out the McBurney Y, BMCC, my gym, and my other option. So... Queens? Brooklyn? LIC? The Island? Jersey?

If and when decision time comes around, I think that price will be a big deciding factor (duh). I'm gonna try and keep it to "free".
Has anyone thought about how/where people are going to sleep? What is customary? Shacking up with other members? Getting rooms? Someone should ask...

Kickchick - Once a date/location has been confirmed I'll try and make it - I have never been to the states - might be the time to make it :)
I am so excited to hear that you and other members from UK would actually try and make it to this MAP meet here in the States.
We look forward to having you!
We certainly cannot please everyone here with a date for the event.... (people work and go to school). If you want to be there you have quite enough notice to plan on being there !
A firm date for the event will be decided upon once we have secured a location and its availability has been established... whether its a weekend day in March or April.
Please if you have a direct connection to a facility then do please ask ....
Unisonus -- that would be great if you could find out for us.... please pm me with necessary info
i would like to come.
what arts are gonna be taught?

what arts are gonna be taught?
... that would depend on what MAP members are in attendance.
As posted earlier, we will be better able to answer questions such as these once a facility is found and a definite date is given.

We should also talk to Chris LaCava (ChrisFromCT) as he can both instruct in Hapkido and Acupuncture/Acupressure.
Sounds cool! I would love to be a part of it, but with everything going on right now, I know I wouldn't be able to help much in the planning stages. Sorry about that. I barely make it to the "forums" now. :(
Take care. :)

My training partners and I would rent space here when we were practicing for belt tests. Rates are reasonable; the studios are very plain but have wooden floors and white, sound-proof rooms.

Wow KC that place totally rocks...looks mighty expensive though? but location, size and facilities are fantastic. If we could just get favourable rates especially if we are going to be raising money for charity. Are we going to be raising money for charity?
KickChick
22-Aug-2005, 12:10 PM
I've already have gone ahead and contacted a few 'places' in the city but this one by far is on the top of my list. I have yet to receive any information but have explained in detail the description of our event and that any proceeds incurred (taking into consideration charging an entry fee to cover the rental cost) would be donated to a charitable organization... (I have a couple selected).

Hmm just and idea.I just thought it would be a great way for mapers to test their skills against other poeple with the same type of dedication and insperation.

.... April Fools Day MAP NYC Meet? .... LOL
Just so the NY MAP meet isn't actually an April Fools Day joke. LOL. Seriously, though. I'm new to the site. Live in VA, outside of C'ville. Just started MA's too, btw. Am only a white belt. Hope some of the advanced MAPers don't mind a newbie asking them repeatedly to do some moves over and over and over. Especially those in Okinawa Karate. Gonna see if I can get sensei and his wife to come too. They are Frank and Michelle Annese (their dojo's site (www.annesemartialarts.com)
Sensei is a certified teacher with Dragon Society (www.dragonsociety.com). I don't know, maybe they might be able to help draw some people in from the Martial Arts world. Sensei does a lot of charity work here in Waynesboro, and if all proceeds above and beyond what covers the meet area goes to charity...well...I'll ask him if he'd be interested in coming, and have gotten the particulars on how to contact him to the right people.
Anyways, off for now.

STILL checking out facilities. MAP members from NYC, if your school or if you know of a facility (gym/studio) .... please submit info to me by email/pm
Bear in mind that this is a fundraising event. I would love to be able to find a facility that would donate their facility ... one could only hope. At best we do want to find the most reasonable rental for 4-5 hours for aprrox. 50 people
We would like to keep the event fee reasonable for everyone! (Instructors are free!)
which brings me to this........I now NEED instructors for the meet! Please email/pm me if you are interested!

I'm kind of new to MAP, but I'm very interested in going. Havn't seen any Eskrimadors interested in going, I might be able to round some up. I live about 10 min. from Washington, D.C. so a nice weekend road trip doesn't sound too bad.
Not really in a position to teach (Been in it for 5 years, so I really should be), but I can ask my brother-in-law to come, I'm sure he wouldn't have a problem. Look forward to seeing you guys once the specifics have been straightened out.

I'm hoping it's NOT "Probation Officer". Although I suspect, if he needs permission to travel out of his state, that's what it means.

I'd be very interested in hooking up with everyone, i'd like to know when you decide on the date and the costs involved. It would be a good opportunity to bring my wife over aswell, she can shop till she drops. If you were interested, I can offer up a sports massage for training or afterwards or anyone with injures if thats any use to you, as i'm not an instructor in M.A. I do a lot of work with a first division Rugby Team, if you need more info just contact.

Wow, I didn't even see this previously. Geez, I wonder if I should give this a go or not. I do teach on Sundays, so I guess it's not too far fetched...is it?

Thanks to all of you who have offered to instruct (or offer massage ;) !!!)
You're on! .... my list that is! :)
Still looking for a facility in which to hold our meet. Unfortunately I need a few more arms & legs as it seems facilities cost more than just my own!
This is first and foremost a charity event.... MAP members will be paying their own way to meet and train with instructors that are offering their time and expertise. Unfortunately we are trying to keep costs down so this is taking a bit longer than we had anticipated.

I've got an idea for a MAP meet....
Instead of NYC, which is pretty boring, lets all go to amsterdam. The arena will be Defqon 1... :D

Obviously you never been to NYC .
Please do not take this thread off course. If you have no interest in this meet or where it is being held then you have no need to offer comment.

I had made this offer before, and I will make it one more time before I run out of space... at my event in February I do have space available that I am willing to donate for the map meet...
It is in Atlantic City,NJ and the weekend is February 17-19...I have many things planned and there is a great event planned as well, including a Pro MMA event, an Asian festival and 10 separate Championships...
I have use of 175,000 sq. ft of space over 3 days and 2 separate seminar rooms that I will donate time for the MAP meet. However they are being booked quickly, we have seminars planned with Jean Jacques Machado,Bill 'Superfoot' Wallace,Michael DePasquale Jr.,Dong Cuesta,Glenn Wilson and others...

Thank you Edward for the offer... however, we had decided to hold this MAP Meet in NYC. Traveling to and from Jersey in February is rather iffy for some of us in the Northeast.... had the dates been in late March or April it would definitely had been a consideration.
I will let you all know that the date for the event will be ......
Saturday April 1, 2006 http://www.sitepoint.com/forums/images/smilies/jester.gif
Please pm me if you are interested in instructing at this event. I have received several pms/emails from MAP members and I thank you for your offers. You have been added to the list of Instructors slated to teach at this event, and I will be in touch to confirm with you!
We are presently tieing up some loose ends with regards to planning these final stages of this Meet ... but I can assure you that an announcement will be made VERY SOON with all the necessary details !
