View Full Version : Note to 'dropping out' members...
What about a generator that sends an automated 'we're missing you at MAP' to members who haven't either logged on or posted in 3 months?
I was thinking today in the toilet (which is a good place for thinking or writing - thank you Geoff Thompson) 'what if so-and-so died and we were all left wondering if they didn't post any more because they were sick of us or something.
Possible, oh-powers-that-be?

Hi Jim,
It's a thought that crossed my mind before, but I honestly think you guys as members should do the contacting. If you miss a member, then send them a pm or an email to tell them so.
I keep getting whiny pathetic automated emails from another forum saying please come back, and it annoys the hell out of me, as it makes them seem desperate, and only interested in me as a number.
As this forum grows, it becomes harder for the less frequent visitors to keep track of the subjects they are interested in, as quite frankly the good stuff tends to get buried under the rubble.
I sometimes send links to threads I think particular members will find interesting, maybe you guys could help out too?
If you have intelligent informative MA friends who are on the web, but are not members of this forum, then I want to know why.

i just wish i had some friends :D LOL.
I agree about the automated e-mails being a bit of a bad idea too they would be annoying it may also bring back trolls who have ceased to bother us

Nice post Andy :D

Are beatings permitted? I'm trying to get some members back here, but they won't budge with gentle persuasion :D
The automated email thing can be annoying, but maybe there's a way of putting something in the profiles that would say when that user last logged in or posted something? That way we can see who's not been on for a while and give them a nudge?

Good suggestion Jim.... and actually I was going to post a similar suggestion the other day, but I forgot.... (so thx for the reminder)
Another forum I registered with some time ago sent me an automated email that went something like this....
"such-and such forum would like you to contribute to our new monthly feature: 'Ask ______".
Each month, _________and the staff of such-and-such-forum will pose a 'tough' and 'timely' question to all members of the message board. Everyone is encouraged to participate!"
the end of the email states "Visit the Message Board now!"
What do you think of MAP maybe doing something similar to this in order to remind infrequent members that MAP misses their input!:D

yeah but sometimes we don't miss there input that is the problem :D

That's the sort of thing I was talking about KC. I guess it might work for some people, but it's important that people learn what MAP is about for themselves, and not have it handed to them on a plate. That's just my take. I'm looking long term rather than short.
Not in favour of forum automation, totally supportive of member interaction! :)

yeah, I see what youre saying Andy and I agree.
Unfortunately I have been part of some forums where increasing the number of members as well as posts was the sole priority of its mods.
I would actually get emails from administration saying that we needed to come up with a "gimmick" to increase activity to the forum because we needed to surpass the #'s of another forum.
... and unfortunately some forums just don't get it that quality is better than quantity... and in this case.... size does not matter!
Yoda said it best a while back on another thread... something to the effect that if it aint broke than it doesn't need fixing.
If you haven't heard from a member in a while... send them off an email or reference a thread that they may want to add input to as Andy suggested.
I make great use of the "recommend us" link when I meet a new ma contact on the web that I feel has some vaueable insight to offer MAP
Someone should make a list of members who don't come on anymore who we'd like to see back. If anyone's still in contact with them, they can give them a nudge.

or a club over the head LOL

That'd be good. Even if you PM'd some of us the names, etc. and we could do it. That way we could still 'give them a nudge' without it coming from a mod or automation and also give us the ability to vet trolls.
Lucky I haven't been drinking tonight or I'd be up for some heavy chat action :D
Okay, let it not be said that I don't practise what I preach. I sent an Email to RachelR member who posted about starting Judo classes at the start of the year.
I'll endeavour to send Emails to others over the next week whenever I can find a thread that I 'spoke' to/with them in.
LOL! Thats two she's got now, I just sent her the thread! She should get the hint that we want her back then :D I'll bug her to come back next time I speak to her too.
Someone else send her some more :)

One thing we are looking at is starting a monthly or quarterly newsletter we have been talking about it for a while and never got round to it yet. Think we might start looking into it again. This will let the members know we are still there.

That sounds like a really good idea. You could get some ads in it to help pay for the site too. Some other karate forums I used to go on have had some kinda of quarterly mailing newsletter. It reminds me the site is still there, and is a good read too.

I was going to write something worse than 'used to', but I rose above it :D

I don't know how this works for everyone else but.....
When I reply to a thread, I'm set up so I automatically subscribe to it. This means I get an e-mail teeling me someone has replied.
What if this became compulsory as opposed to optional?
Any objections?

I can't seem to manage to keep below my quota for my email now... that would drive me crazy!!

Me too - I definately don't want an email every time there's action on a thread I've posted on.

S'cos you're Blonde KC :D
Bet your e-mail count drops if you shave your head ;)
Know what you mean though, I get over 300 mails on a Friday alone.
Just a thought

Cain ... yes, it is an option but Andy was suggesting making it compulsory generating an email every time you reply to a subscribed thread.. (well, that is if you subscribe to a thread I guess)
LOL.. now Andy....
I just found out the other day when this guy mowing his lawn asked me why I kept running outside constantly to check my mail box ... now I know when my computer says "you've got mail" it means "email"!! hahahaha:D
