Could you please be a bit more specific as to what white belt form you are doing? ....
This being your first competition... go into it as a learning experience, an opportunity to put your beginning skills to the test.
Don't be discouraged if you lose.
Competitions are also fun, if they fail to be, then you are doing something wrong.
Judges will be looking for (but note every comp is different)....
Body movement to be smooth, not too quick, not too slow.
Technique execution should be quick and powerful, except where slow motion is required.
Concentrate on stances, they are most obvious to judges.
Chamber for techniques and re-chamber afterward.
Chamber kicks, hold them at full extension for a split second so judges may see the foot position and may appreciate the technique used in the kicks, and then re-chamber.
......Remember patterns are a show case for technique and artistic expression.

AkaNavy107. Its nice to see someone else from TN in here. What tourney is coming up? You said you was with the ITA, is that the International Tae Kwon Do Alliance. If who is your instructor?
It also depends a lot on if you are going into a open MA tourney or a style Tourney. If your whith the ITA/USTA then im sure you will be at an all tkd tourney. If thats so, the judges will be lookin for how well you do your kata (because all of you do the same one), how well your movements and techniques are, and you over all apperance.
One step sparring - Make sure you dont rush through it. like in #1 I think. When the other person steps in and punches. Dont just sling your arm up there for your over head block, make it look good and sharp. And make sure your 3 punches go where they need to. Just keep all your moves clean, sharp, and dont rush through them.
Sparring, all i can tell you is keep your hands up and do that you have been told to. Dont get mad if you fall behind in the points. Keep a clear head and focus on the target that you want to hit.

Hey that's right ... I didn't even realize you were from TN AkaNavy107 ... I wonder if you and chazz are in same neighborhood!
As far as your white belt form.... if its Chon ji, then you have to be concerned with exucution of kicks in your form since it is all block & punches, just show *snap* and remember that moves need to be in sync .... and since you are still a beginner you also wouldn't have to be concerned with sparring (besides the one-step) either but good tips from chazz when you do compete at next rank level.

We might have taken from the same guy... Did you take from Mark Johnson? (Sorry Mr. Johnson), he's also got a place in Dayton, I think that's where he started out teaching but he moved up to Signal Mountain cause the instructor there wasn't doing a good job... Or that's what I've heard... And thanks for both the comments from both you and KickChick, I'm just trying to do the best I possibly can and win to make Mr. Johnson prouder of me.. you know? Anyway thanks for the comments

I don't know how American tournaments are different to ours, but the advice is the same I guess... guard up, and don't do what I did: lose points for turning your back or going out of the lines if you are sparring. And don't forget to kihap nice and loud to drown out other people :)
