It seems to me that the indestructible two-foot rock-hard callous I used to have on my two front knuckles has shrunk a bit, although the leather skin's tough as ever. Can callousing/conditioning disappear over time or through lack of conditioning?

Yes - I used to do all that stupid punching of straw bound posts when I was younger and didn't know any better.
They're ok again now :D

Doan worry, I have enough arthritis to cripple a third-world nation. The question was intended to be about if I could loose my "hard hands" if I stopped doing anything involving my knuckles?
Yeah, you would loose them. When I was training for my grading, my skin started to toughen up a fair bit, I'm assuming from doing seiken push ups on a hard floor and hitting my bag. Now I've stopped again, the tough skin is starting to go back to normal.

no, i mean the bone hardening, not the skin hardening?
As far as I know, the skin hardening is a result of the bone hardening. It will probably go too, but slowly. It all depends on the calcuim and what not.
