I've recently added regular skipping to my training routine but have been getting sore shins from doing it. The pain usually goes after a few hours but the shins remain sensitive for a few days after.

The possible causes for the pain that i can think of are:

1) Incorrect technique (possible- pain usually worse if i skip by alternating feet so that only one foot touches the floor rather than a two footed jump)

2) Being overweight: Not an issue as i weigh approximatly 11 stone and haven't had shin problems from running.

3) Hard surface: I skip on the patio (concrete)- not very bouncey but do wear trainers.

If anyone could suggest anything to help it would be appreciated.

Hmmm, I skip every night and have never had the pain you describe.

The only things i can think of are

1) You are not stretching beforehand and you are straining something

2) You've got "shin-splints" give yourself time to rest heal

3) You are exercising muscles you don't regularly used, the bouncing action of skipping and running exercise different muscles, especially if you are keeping on your toes.

Rest, then go back to your workout and reduce the skipping until you can complete your set with no pain. then slowly increase.

How long you skipping for??

The shins or the calves?

I always feel "heavy" in my calves after skipping for about 20 mins...I think that's normal...but nothing in my shins...

Sounds like a muscular imbalance between your calves (Gastrocnemius) and the muscle at the front of your shin (Tibialis Anterior).

Here's a useful link...

Thanks for the tips people. I think i'll switch to swimming for a few weeks to give my shins a rest then reintroduce skipping gradually. Admittedly i think i was trying to skip too often too soon which wasn't giving my shins time to recover- that or skipping has aggrevated some sort of shin splint injury from road running (i did quite a bit earlier in the year to prepare for competition)

Thanks again..
