I was doing my bench pressing today and was half way through my third set when my back spasmed, It was painful and I couldnt lift the bar? Has this happened to anyone else? Is it normal, can it be avoided?

Hmmmm.....sounds like a reciprocal innervation failure.

That shouldn't happen.

Where you pushing off the floor with your feet?

Arching your back off the bench?

Using more weight than usual?

My feet were planted on the floor wouldn't say I was pushing off

My back might have arched

weight was my norm.

You should definately look at balance issues, feet braced NOT pushing, small of back flat on the bench.

Try lifting your feet of the floor and lifting your knees to your chest - be careful with balance though - you may need to drop the weight a touch.

Your back shouldnt arch. It should be flat on the bench through the entire exercise. your feet should be planted flat in front of the bench too.
