View Full Version : Collecting Injuries
Us martial artists are a tough lot it seems, we pick up all sorts of nasty injuries, yet still head down the dojo day after day and carry on training with them.
So...
Whats the worst injury that you've had and continued to train with? Did it stop you at all, or where you straight back to the dojo?
Or whats the mildest injury you've had thats ended up laying you out of training for a while?

Well I think the worst was a pinched nerve in the lower back. And it didn't happen in martial arts. I tried to participate but I just couldn't. So I wound up sitting in the back watching class. I just couldn't stay away.

Hmm, offhand I've never had a serious training related injury. I know someone who had to stand out of a few classes because they sprained their ankle, but they did that stepping off a kerbstone. If people don't train due to injuries in Choi then they tend to be self-inflicted, although there have been a couple.

I'm currently out of hard training with a torn ligament in my knee (Medial Collateral) - It's driving me nutz!!!!!
Over the last 5 years (I've been training for the last 26) I've had...
Broken ribs twice
Fractured kneecap (That hurt!)
Broken nose twice (Doc says if it happens again it's major surgery)
Broken cheekbone
Broken hand
Several black eyes
Bruises & scrapes on a regular basis.
Yep - martial arts for health & fitness - LOL!

Spinal compression x 4
Torn shoulder x 2
Concussion x christ knows how many
Broken toes/fingers x (well I've run out of fingers and toes to count)
Broken nose x 2
Cracked ribs x 2
Dislocated Knee x 1
Dislocated elbow (a quick in and out) x 1
Popped wrist x a coupla' million
Black eye x far to many
Twisted ankle x 2
Bruised tailbone x 1
And thats what I can remember off the top of my head.

The worst injury I have tried training with is a broken knee and fractured patella. But I get injured alot due to the nature of my training. The worst injury by something in training was 2 severed fingers that happened when I was on the phone after weapons training when my best friend got happy with a Naginata.

That's eerie, Yoda. I'm out of training right now with a strained medial collateral ligament. Got it falling off my bike when a freak rainstorm hit (I hadn't known there were tornado warnings out for the day)
And Rob, ever since I first heard of that incident, I've wondered two things: How successfully were the fingers reattached, and is he still your best friend? (If yes to #2, do you make sure something better than an eskimo spear is nearby for parrying whenever he's around?)

It's injury season again.
A few weeks ago I did a 2 day BJJ seminar with Roy Harris - absolutely fantasic seminar ......BUT he armlocked me soooo many times (I was his "uke") that my right elbow is totally shot.
2 days ago I was tracing a leak in my bathromm and stepped onto a floorboard that I'd taken up - right onto a nail that went through my trainer into my foot - Yeeeeeouch!
Still..... can't help thinking of Andy and his achilles when these petty niggles star to get to me. I wouldn't swap. :(

I have injuries that are not related to training, but often effect it sometimes: Carpel tunnel, which makes me bite my tongue everytime I do push ups. A farked up ankle, which doesn't really bother me, except when we run on the hard dojang floor for 5 minutes, and do repeated jump kicks that require landing on that foot.
I do have training related injuries. Minor ones, though. I can't count the bruises that I got from sparring, self defense, ect over the two years I've been training. I broke a finger blocking a kick, strained my left hammy twice, and pulled my right hammy recently.

The petshop is gonna ban you soon Laurie if you keep straining those Hammies :D

I've had a nail through my foot, it ain't pleasant. My physio said that my ankle injury I'm carrying just now (which I forgot to put on my previous list) will always bother me now and I've got to keep doing my physio exersices, no probs I've just add them to the morning work out and hope I get really sexy looking calves ;)
Yoda's right, whenever I get a ding just now I think of Andy (my insparation!) and think that I'm just being a sissy girl, at least I've managed to avoid the surgens table :)
Thanx

Wow... I've just started my training, and have read over this list and what can I say! Scary. Looking forward to years of training much more now... :D Especially because I'm doing Hapkido, with as many wrist locks and joint manipulation as you can find, and I've already sprained my wrists about 10 times, mostly by botched landings of arials off of trampolines :p Anyway... yes.. impressive lists!
Sweeet.
I've done in the ligaments on the bottom of my foot by kicking a door in. I also managed to lose a toenail when I stubbed my toe on the coffee table. No training for me for a while I think..

'Fraid all I can brag about is seasonal twinges in the knee after being heelkicked on it, overburdened wrists and knuckles broken several times, now pretty deformed.

well I had major surgury on my left hand to repair a tendon and nerve that was cut. I had to wear a brace and then after the second surgury I had to wear a constant movement machine on my left hand. I continued to train only I could not use my left hand. Which made many things difficult.

11 years ago I broke my right pinky from improper punching technique (don't do that anymore). Pinched nerve in my neck, causing so many manners of arm and hand problems, the doctors thought I had a mild form of epilepsy. Currnet recovering from knee surgery from this past Monday, to repair cartiledge that was protruding into my knee joint and shave off a bony deposit on the femur that caused it. I had this problem for about 20 years, but last month it finally sidelined me. Broke a big toe in class one tme, and kept training . Torn groin muscle, kept training.
My wife thinks 'm crazy. I have had many more injuries than that, just can't remember them all. And I just can't stop training.

Newest (1month old) Torn ACL in my right knee waiting to see how the Doc is going to fix me up. That was from a leg sweep gone bad.
cracked a few ribbs in the past
1 broken nose from my buddy who never kicks above the waist-he did a fall away spin hook kick-Note- having the nose fixed hurts more than when it broke!
torn groin muscle-felt that one for a long time
cut my eyelid open while doing some free-flow in eskrima
jammed and broken fingers
not bad for how long i have been in.
Still have all my teeth!
I haven't had too many injuries...
Had my arm hyperextended a couple of times and recently my left knee from a heel hook. On all occasions I've kept training, I just get home and realise I can't move my arm/leg! :D
I've started panicking about my knee recently (it's been 2 months since I've done it), it's hasn't got any better, even after I've taken 3 weeks off with no training. So now I'm just gonna go back to training (figure it can't get much worse) until I see a physio about it and they tell me to do otherwise.

Yo, Bon, have the knee looked at NOW. I ignored mine for way too many years and am now paying for it.

ya, I agree get your knee looked at now, and not later. when i was around 16 I injured my left knee playing some b-ball and ignored problems for about 3 years It kept getting worse until I had my knee scoped and found that the injury had been a complete tear of my ACL. Too much time had passed and there was nothing left to repair, and I could not afford a reconstruction.
Now having a new tear in my right......well lets just say it sucks!
I have a long time Martial arts friend in Waverley who is a "Physio" if you want a Prof. Opinion for free PM me and I will give you his email.

Had a bad concussion in training once, blacked out the next day and had to go for X-rays to check for skull fractures :D
Had the usual list of sprains, twists etc. Lost count of the amount of times I've hurt an ankle grappling or messed up a thumb hitting someone.
Chronic back and groin problems are my biggest weakness.
Nathan
I've had broken toes and sprains and stuff, but the worst injury I've had was a torn Medial ligament when my knee clunked out during grappling ... man that hurt like a **** for weeks - lost months of training and had 10 weeks off work ( that bit wasn't so bad :) ) Still not 100% confident in it - so look after your knee Bon !
