View Full Version : cutting down on cardio, bad?

Ok, I haven't found my new trainer yet, but when I do, I'm going to be pretty busy. I'll be starting weight training around the same time (probably a bit sooner) so I have to rearrange my schedule. I'm not sure if I can fit an hour of cardio a day into the schedule, especially during the winter months when I'll have to do it at a gym, most likely. I know you technically only need 30min of cardio, but I spend more time than average warming up and cooling down. I was thinking of cutting cardio down to 3-4 days a week when this happens. Would this be a bad idea? I kinda feel like it would be, but it seems like the only way to work out this schedule. Thanks for any advice.

3-4 times per week is average.... that is what I personally do and I don't mind being "average"

Your runs need to be spaced and scaled so that you do not increase muscular damage from your previous runs and do not lose the benefits. The us surgeon-general recommends burning 1500 calories per week through exercise. This is considered minimal. This can be achieved by running 5 miles 3 times a week unless I have my sums wrong, (which given my stupidity is probable). The rule of thumb given is to exercise for half an hour most days a week. The national medical association in America, as I read in newscientist, now considers this advice dated and instead recommends exercising for periods of an hour. Increased endurance is obviously part of overall health. Warming up and cooling down should not be considered part of your session as your heart rate is not above your training threshold and below your overload point. Slo-mo cardio is not very MA orientated anyway. As soon as you can handle them, move on to taku intervals. I also think that you should do shuttle runs to prepare for taku intervals.

phew.(pants) Any good? :)

What are taku intervals? Is that like HIIT?

These are. (http://www.trainforstrength.com/Endurance1.shtml) Yup, they're HIT. Rephrase: they are HIT.

Sounds more like fartleks, I think. Maybe? Something like that?
All I'd say is to watch your diet, if you're exercising less and eating the same amount you'll be storing more energy--ie, bodyfat.
