Weird & Disgusting Foods (http://www.andreas.com/food.html)

Ok.... what led me to this site was trying to find out exactly what some of the stuff is that everyone eats here.
I see a food names in many of the posts from different countries and I haven't a clue as to what they are.... nevermind the names of all the alcohol that is consumed here!

This site is really quite interesting....
... included are some tasty insect recipes.

...so you all think Scrapple, Cod Liver Oil, Pumpkin Pie, Raw Oysters, Lobster, and Fiddlehead Ferns are weird and disgusting??? I'm from the U.S. northeast!

Wales: Laver Bread, Rook Pie, Lardy Cake

I've never heard of Rook Pie and Lardy Cake. I think its getting confused with Teisen Lap (cake), but thats lush. Laverbread is vile though... frigging seaweed, bluergh!

Some of the foods are really quite ordinary then there are of course the extremes like
"monkey brains" which must be eaten from the open skull of a live monkey, in a VERY expensive restaurant
When I was in high school I saw this on a video Faces Of Death, Journeys Into the Depths of Depravity where they showed a couple in this fancy Hong Kong restaurant being give a covered tray with two monkeys inside and then handed a sledgehammer to wack them unconscious so they could slice the tops of their heads off and eat dinner.

I know what you mean, McD is always cleaner round here too, its more a case of finding a clean table in BK rather than an empty one!

BK food looks better, but McD food just tastes so damn good!

Both of which are made with MRM; Mechanically Recycled Meat.

Essentially, Beef Carcasses, which have had all the useable cuts of meat removed, are hung up and blasted with a high pressure water jet. Whatever lands on the floor gets scraped up and made into Burgers. Lips, ears, noses, cartilidge etc.

Yummy. :D

Hedgehog,
I'm Welsh and my Grandparents used to eat Pigeon Pie and sometimes Hedgehog, if they could catch one. Oh and Pig Foot.

You kill the Hedgehog (Equiv in the States is Porcupine) and then roll it in clay and bake it in the fire, then crack open the clay, all the spines come out in the clay and voila you have a tasty edible, low fat high Protein food.

The parts of London that were hstorically populated by Welsh people in Victorian times, suffered a substantial drop in Pigeon Numbers. That's what we need now...

Laver Bread does taste a bit Lary though Kyo girl. It's okay with Bacon on top-seaweed is really good for you though. Oysters and Beer is a good one.

My boss is Hokkien Chinese and he has taken me to many a Chinese Gambling den/ restaurant, where we have sampled the delights of such things as Sea Slug (Like the Underlay on Carpet), Chicken Foot (Surprisingly tasty for something with toes) and Apparently Goats Testicles, although the ****er didn't tell me that until afterwards. No wonder they were all laughing...

I ate cows brains once in France. It was in a self service resturant, and I read the menu wrong. I thought it was tuna cassorole :D Just shows how bad my french is!

SoKKlab, I've had pigeon pie too, my grandfather gave me some. I'm all for eating them, Cardiff city centre is full of them too. I had rabbit when I was little, but my father didn't tell me what it was till after I ate it. I cried for an hour! :)

Laverbread's full of iron, so i should eat it, but I can't even force it down. I like rarebit best, us Welsh have the best national dish going... cheese on toast, yum :D

Yeah but I can't eat Cheese/ Lactose,
It makes me Huey, or wheat bread, gluten etc.
That makes
me curl up in a ball going arrrgghhh my guts Arrrgghhh.

So it's Pigeon without the Pie Crust for me or More hedgehog...

Oh yeah, I forgot: In Indochina, they eat fried cockroaches. Not too bad I think, at least there's plenty of protein in insects.

SoKKlab
04-Jul-2003, 02:27 PM
When eating Pigeons,
You don't eat the digestional tract, guts, stomach etc.
As it's full of horrible stuff, but the Flesh is tasty, particularly in a nice red wine sauce and oil.

We used to eat Ants when we were kids, just lick your finger and stick them to it and then put them on your tongue. Daft I know...

Oh yeah, other Welsh dishes are Puffin (Sea Bird) and Byllydowca (Which is think is either Gannet or another of the Big Sea Birds in English). Not rotten Sea Gulls though.

Please don't eat puffin people, it's an endangered species! I repeat: What the hell is wrong with fried bread?

um... it's on the website... :(

SoKKlab
04-Jul-2003, 05:00 PM
I only ate Puffin once,
And I was only a dwt at the time. They weren't endangered then, honest. Although, come to think of it, perhaps the one that I had, was the one that pushed them 'over the edge' (Oh No, it's all my fault!).

There's nothing wrong with Fried Bread...

Knight_Errant
04-Jul-2003, 05:02 PM
Maybe they're not endangered then. They're probably getting rarer though.

I have a thing against eating anything that I find cute, and I think puffins are cute. My father had a habit of feeding me all sorts of weird stuff when I was little and wouldn't tell me what it was. I've had shark and eel as well.. bleurgh :(

SoKKlab
04-Jul-2003, 06:04 PM
Conga Eel and Elvers,
Which were a delicacy in Tudor times/Late Middle Ages. They taste a bit desperate to me, like Famine food.
Puffins are cute, but their Bills are Razor sharp and they are hard little buggers too. Never mess with a Puffin, they are Mas Oyamas of the Sea Bird World.

Like starting up a style that millions of people practise, getting dan grades in Kempo, Judo and shotokan and being a general all round hard b******? Sure, some of the stuff he did wasn't all above board, but I doubt many other people could have done the stuff that was.

Unfortunately it was not to be given to local clients but was instead cooked on the premises for the restaurant workers to eat.
Somehow it was mixed up with the Peking duck ....

Okay - I need to revive this thread....

I have discovered the joys of Natto! I'm on a "real Asian food" kick right now (mostly bakery things), and have discovered Natto, IE: Fermented soybeans. It's said that "only real Japanase eat Natto", due to stinkiness, stickyness, etc...but I have to admit, with soy sauce, it's pretty yummy...(Without soy sauce, it's a bit nasty...) And it's supposed to be GREAT for you! I'm looking into how to make it at home now, in order to make it much more affordable (and Tempeh, which is also a fermented soy product)

Anyone else?

Go to Chinatown or a good Chinese restaurant that serves Dim Sum and order Chickens feet in black bean sauce, spicy tripe or sea snails.

Dim Sum is a Chinese lunch thing. All foods are either fried or steamed and are mainly dumplings or grilled meat. and is only served during the day.
Chickens feet is soft so it slides right off the bone..yummy.

Anyone going off to Hong Kong, go and grab yourself a fried pigeon, $15HK = £1.50UK. its lovely. Granted the place serving it is more or less a junkyard with corrorgated iron sheets as walls but its great.

I guess its easy to catch those pidgeon things. We call them rats with wings round here. Tho I doubt that they are much worse to eat than rabbit or quail or something like that. People around here eat pig and cow brains also. They mush them all up, mix them with milk, crackers, spices and make a patty out of it, sort of like a hamburger. Kind of disgusts me, but hey, if someone wants to eat it......

Should this be linked with the marmite thread?

Black pudding. Fried bread. Part of the best hangover cure ever!

I have eaten swordfish and shark before at a Japanese restaurant in Nottingham. That was delicious. Also had some ocotpus Sushi there. Mmmmmmmmmm!

I saw an episode of Fear Factor where they had to eat bulls balls.

My family were throwing up but I was thinking

"Damn all you need is some mustard and the'd rule!"

here the mountain shepherds bite off the testicles of young male lambs at docking and castration time, and eat them raw, they are called mountain oysters......

some ppl here [not me] like pigs trotters boiled with puha which is a weed found growing in poor ground. Its nasty.

I've eaten horse steaks BBQ'd - they were pretty tasty with a few onions! ;) At a place I was staying once, one of the young showjumpers dropped dead so they carved it up and we ate it - or at least some of us with stronger stomachs ate it. I actually quite liked the taste, somewhere between beef and venison.

the worst thing I've ever eaten was sea slug in Singapore! Its closest thing you can get to eating fish flavoured snot. It was disgusting and I nearly threw up...

I do like miso however which is another type of femented soybean curd. Someone was talking about femented soybeans earlier on.

chickens feet are ok albeit a bit stringy!

I DO NOT like tripe or brains or sheeps eyeballs. Even the thought of these is nearly enough to send me retching.

When I lived in California, some friends invited me over for "authentic Mexican food". The meal included "Cabeza" (which literally means 'head'), which is the head of the cow, left over after all the useful parts were taken by the butcher, stewed in a slow cooker. Also had a tripe-relative: grilled cow milk tracts. Very crunchy.
