Hi i was wondering if anybody knew the belt meanings of the combat hapkido (ICHF) belt colours. I know the colours of the belt but not the meanings. I tried googling it and only found meanings for traditional hapkido which had 7 belts and combat hapkido has 10 belts. Thanks alot.

I know that in other arts, some people have a kind of philosophy behind the belt colors but I have never really thought or asked about it in Combat Hapkido.

In my experience with Combat Hapkido, we use the belts mainly as a kind of "book mark" in the curriculum, a way of building up concepts and applying them in techniques in a spiralling manner. Belts provide a way to break the material up, give a good idea of what the student has covered and should be covering, and aligns the testing curriculum with the evaluation means.

Beyond that, I don't think too many people get wrapped up in the belts that much. Generally at a GM P seminar, we don't wear belts... mainly because we are all there to learn and share equally. A "white" belt in Combat Hapkido may also hold a 5th dan in some other style or may be a complete beginnner. The belt you wear should not affect how that person is treated. All students get treated the same and you can help the guy next yto you if you can (or ask for help).
