Which of the following in the list do you consider your best attribute for fighting?

I say willpower (although sheer stubbornness would be more appropriate)

I dont think I ever used anything but will power in most of my fights :D

I chose heart/desire. To me willpower and heart/desire are pretty similar... someone can have power, or agility, technique, or whatever. But without having a heart to fight and a desire to win your already on a path to losing.

Lol - they are pretty similar. Dunno why I put them both

I have been doing so much darn cardio lately, it would have to be that in terms of my 'biggest' attribute in terms of fighting ....it's stamina.
I have better attributes in other areas, as I typically dislike to fight.
So guess heart/desire is out huh? ;)

to be honest, probably my chin. which isnt a particularly GREAT attribute. But I have had pro fighters clock me and be surprised when Im not phased by it, and have been complimented on it a few times.
I mean I would like to say that im an awesome kicker or something....

Hmm, I chose heart, but that's just critical for any fighter. I think skill would be second.

I was thinking of a general "toughness" but I went with speed because I tend to be a little faster than average despite my bulk. I say toughness because I can take far more than I can dish out and keep going regardless.

I think for me it is definitley heart/desire as I'm just a newbie to the sport of karate in some ways. I might have already earned two belts but there is still alot to learn. But my desire to succeed in getting my black belt makes me endure the hard training, doing more hours than most in my dojo and keeping on learning and learning....

but my ability to take ridiculous amounts of damage has helped me more than once. Its no surprise really I mean I did play rugby for a few years (as a prop for you fellow ruggers). I would have to say that at a close second is my ability to stay calm and keep my head whilst insanity goes on around me. Is it just me or do I seem pretty weird, oh well I'm draggin on now.

i'd have to say hear/desire. i don't have the best technique in my dojang (I started TKD 1 year ago this june :D), i certainly do not have a single ounce of stamina/endurance (i start huffing and puffing a lot after thirty seconds to a minute), i'm not the fastest kicker (i'm a bit heavy so i'm not the most agile.. :)), and i'm not the strongest (though some of my friends complain about kicking too hard...). but when it comes to sparring, i go all for it! everyone says my kihap is so loud that they're afraid to go near me during sparring classes :D... (however, sometimes my master says i do too much kihap-ing and not enough kicking... :o ) <yes i do know one needs more than spirit to win a fight, but hey! there's more to fighting than technique, speed, defense, and strength; one needs the mindset to win!>
i  sparring! need i say more?

I've allways wanted to pursue the Martial way, and i'll go with the many voices saying that ; "without heart, you got nothing!". Ever since i picked up my first MA-book (which got me into MA, the title was something like 'Dynamic kicks' though i don't remember the authors name anymore) i wanted to learn "it". If that doesn't go under heart (persistance in following ones goal, nomatter how rough the journey) i don't know what does.
Just my 2½ cents :D !

You're right, to be a truely successful fighter you need to have a will to just destroy people regardless of the consequences. They knew what they were getting into when they scrapped with you, they pay the consequences.
apart from luck,i would say speed

I would say that It would have to be speed, that and a refusal to give in, but that is probly why I was in the fight in the first palce.

might not apply so much to self defense martial arts but in sport fighting i think you have to be ever so slightly a sociopath. A lot of people simply do not like to hit other people which is a commendable trait but wont get you far in kickboxing or mma or boxing. A guy I know lost a fight, and afterwards in the changing rooms he told me he just didnt want to hurt him- despite the fact that the other guy obviously had no qualms!

skill/technique for me, combined with the fact that everyone underestimates the orange belt, and doesn't think that just maybe he has several years of kickboxing/karate/kung fu under his belt ;)
I just lurrrrve black belts that "go easy". That tends to last right up to second jump spinning hook kick to the head :D

How about "I don't care" ?
Examples:
You think you're tougher than me? You're right. You're tougher than me. Now go away.
Oh, you think I'm ugly? Well, you're right. I'm ugly. Now go away.
You can beat me up? You're right. I'd be stupid to fight you because I'd lose. Now go away.
In the make-believe world I live in this a fight saver, and a fight saver is a good thing because not fighting = victory.

I'd have to say strength but I hopefully want to be able to deal with any trouble without the use of force so technique is my main goal at the moment.
I have to go with Skill/Technique...that being said I think that being adaptive helps tremendously on my side.

05-Jul-2005, 02:13 AM
I would probly say my heart and desire because it is through the belief in myself that i get my strength and my power to fight!

I just generally love to hurt people lol though i'm peaceful. So if you tell me i can let loose on someone and not care whether i hit a sporing part or not...I'll have the *willpower* :D ...to hurt him as much and as fast as possible.

I'd have to say I have strength-- both mentally and physically. In a fight (let's say with a "thug") I may very easily overpower him mentally, as well as physically. But if that "thug" is stronger than I, there is no way that "thug" will overpower me mentally- because I will always find a way to outsmart him. :)
I am also quite confident in my skill/technique as I am my physical and mental power. I also have an advantage of my leg reach- keeping my enemy "at bay".
So overall, my best attribute would have to be "Never wanting to quit."
I hate quitting--

The first thing I think is speed and agility followed closely by ringcraft, strength, technique, heart and desire and then defense/will power. But, I truly think that TIMING is the best asset a figther can possess. A good example is Chuck Liddell, while he is obviously a skilled figther with speed, defense, toughness, strength, etc (though not as skilled as some). The thing I like the most about him is his timing. It is evidenced by the way he dismantles his opponents the second time he fights the, it is like he is seeing their advances more clearly every time and unloading on them with a well timed flurry or one punch knock out. It is all timing, just like comedy, selling and asking out a girl.

calmness, I dont know why but I never get excited or frightened in a situation, I just calmly take it in and act as I have been trained to.
in other words I look at the situation clamly and assess it on the spot.

I am suprised so few people picked stamina (thats what I picked, with agility or maybe will power coming second). Because I see it as being soooo important. Sometimes I think whats the point of being able to do beautiful techniques if you can only do them for the first 30 seconds of the match and then you spend the next minute and a half getting pummelled by the other person because you are too tired to lift your hands up! I have seen so many fights won or lost on because of the persons stamina.
And things like felxibilty or heart, you either have or you haven't (to a certain extent) but everybody can increase their stamina.
19thlohan
30-Oct-2005, 09:49 AM
I would have to say skill/technique, especially timing. All good fighters have heart and conditioning. To beat them you need your skills.

Really? No, I thought it was the ability to craft rings.
Anyhoo, my best attribute is a combination of speed/strength (Power). Don't know, but I've always seen it as important to balance these two out. It's closely followed by stamina, and then calmness. And then the other ones, they can go off somewhere and take a dump.

I have very good footwork and mobility. It always came quite naturally to me. I'm also very fast and very strong and reasonably smart, so I suppose that my talent is reasonably well-rounded for someone with such limited training under his belt.

I have good speed, agility, power, skill and will power but with all of that my heart drives it forward. It makes me win whether I reach victory or a loss.

My biggest strenght certainly speed and agility. But i don't how long will it last as i get older. So right now, i really focused on my skills and technique, and also simplicity in the execution of my technique. I cannot rely too much on my strenght coz i have a small body frame(this attribute to my agility). I still do workout and carry weights though to stay in shape. My target when i'm older is to develope my inner strenght or Chi" to compensate my lack of outer strenght.

For me its skill+technique, closely followed by speed. I fought a few people who do have a lot of heart and determination but it doesnt get them anywhere against a faster fighter who can just stop the wildly flailing heartful fighter with a good side kick. Anyway, strength comes as a result of using the correct technique.
