The statement on the site that people in the middle ages were forbidden from reading bibles is false. However, I wouldn't imagine that there was a whole lot of bible reading going on because 1) most people couldn't read and 2) before the printing press, bibles were rare.

weren't there only a handful of people who could read back then?

I'm no historian but I've heard that the bible was left untranslated from Latin deliberately so that the ordinary people couldn't read it for themselves. I could be wrong though.

Nope, no truth to this. Some historical accounts make this claim based on a law that was passed regarding unauthorized translations -- in order to prevent people from reading one particular translation that was corrupt, full of heresy, and did not accurately render Scripture.

The "ordinary" people probably could not have read a Bible in any language, though, since literacy rates were so low. Before the advent of the printing press, literacy was not important for the average person, as hardly anyone could afford to own the hand-scribed, hand-illuminated books, which were extremely expensive.

one of the things that pushed the prodestent movement was the translation into local languages of the bible. from here they used the bible as the main book to have mothers teach their children how to read. luther wanted people to save through faith, not works... so in order to create that faith they also needed to know to read the bible.

it kind of pushed the education movement for prodestants. but it also was a throwback for women (pushing them back into traditional roles) and wasn't open for formal education (non-religious).

No it is not you could be burned as a heretic for reading the bible unless you were clergy or a landowner. This was the law all over Europe.

Another attempt to undermine the bible, and thus, another religion. What for? In order to further his/her/their own goals and agendas.

...or to show people the truth of the brainwashing organised religious cult that ruins lives, yet convinces people they have better lives, known as Christianity?

For 8 years I was a Christian, convinced I was happy, but really I was miserable inside. I got old enough to admit this to myself, I eventually broke free from the guilt-fear-relationship I had with my so-called God, and accepted the facts, that I always tried to denie (out of fear). Since then my life has turned for the better in almost every aspect.

Nothing wrong with that Infra.

BendZ. I was a Christian too. 8 years as well. Totally dug it. However, what I am trying to say is that EVERY beliefs system is objectified to a certain extent. EVERY belief system has an agenda. EVERY belief system will have people in it that will alter it.

What I am saying is that by denying Christianit, don't fall into another trap such as throwing yourself blindly at Paganism, Maat, Aleister Crowelian occult teachings, Buddhism, Atheism, Islam, or any other belief.

Because there will always be someone there manipulating things.
