Is it just me that doesn't take offense when the word Tw@t is used? I've used it a number of times without much thought and people seem to jump for their moderating pens .....
I've always considered the term (despite it's obvious genital references) to be at the lower end of the vulgarity scale along the same lines of idiot, muppet etc etc.
Ovbiously I'm in the minority here

I think its generally rated quite highly on the vulgarity chart, how can you compare it to idiot, you muppet! :D

I think that there might be some problems with the word **** because to many people is it a term for women's genitalia.

I believe it matters in what context a word is used in. This is normally easily understood face to face and even over the phone as you can hear the inflections in the voice and when face to face you can note the body language. Sadly however, you don't have either facility available to you over the net, just emoticons and if these aren't used liberally misunderstandings happen. Also it does depend on the mood a person has when they read it too. Too much can be taken out of context if you have just had a bad day and read what you want into a remark, hence why Moderators exist. If at all possible it is in the best interest of a Moderator to make sure these misunderstandings don't start or worse still esculate but fortunately our job here is made fairly easy as we have several long term posters and a light hearted group.

A simple change in vowels will solve the problem here...

twit n :
idiot, stupid person.... more often than not a British term
Check out thr thread Britain and America: divided by a common language (http://www.martialartsplanet.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2484)
.... whether you're British or American, one word can be particularly offensive to the other without the other knowing that that word is... get it?
I dont think it is offensive in any way - if we are concerned that young people may read this forum and be affected for life by the use of the word, then surely they shouldnt be surfing the net un-supervised ?
Mind you, there aren't many words that offend me ... apart from 'Gimp' I hate being called that !! :D

Well - I think the word in question raises the stakes from light hearted banter and fun to a level of vulgarity that we don't need here.
What I don't like is the way this word and others like it are thrown into general conversation - they are extremes and if used at all should be used as such.
If you cannot express yourself without resorting to words like this then maybe you should have paid more attention in school.
I will ignore the posts above but will continue to delete such words as & when I see them - and I consider substituting a @ or a 4 for an "A" an insult to my intelligence.
Thank you: This has been a public information broadcast from your local Jedi Moderator (Yes, a **** :D)
I don't really like it, but the word is hate most is the C word, it means the same thing as t**t. It can be offensive, depends how you use it and who you use it at. It fits certain people well however.
Heh,
there are some women are trying to give the word c**t the meaning sacred again, so it becomes a nice word and not a cuss word. ;)

Yoda;
I disagree on the extremity of the word but then again this is your show not mine, hence consider it not used any more. I wasn't trying to offend your intelligence with @
