I have been going to Hapkido and Taekwondo for a total of 4-5 days a week for the last 4 months or so. I also work full time where I am on my feet the whole time and do a lot of lifting. My problem is that recently my legs (knee joints, calves, shins, ankles and feet) are so sore its hard to walk let alone train. I work out with weights as well and have for years. Am I just sore from the MA training? possibly overdoing it? looking for suggestions, thanks all in advance.

Seems like theres a hell of alot of strain on your legs from day to day.. It could just be your not used to all the kicking and stuff in the MA's yet.

Scott, I think you have been introduced to Mr Burnout.

Sounds to me like you are overtraining. Is your body getting enough time to recover from all of these activities? Are you getting enough sleep? Is your body getting all the right nutrients and vitamins etc?

Shin splints could be another cause of some pain and are most often caused by some form of overtraining, or improper training.

A visit to a good doctor or health professional could be in order.

Best of luck.

Re read Romulus' post. Try taking a few days off to recover if the strain gets to my but I'd advise going to see a doctor a.s.a.p. Last thing you want is to have shin splints all the time.

if it is shin splints there are a couple things you can do to work it out and hopefully make it go away if it isnt too bad yet. one of my personal favorites after I got them during soccer was to go stand on a stair with just my toes and then use my ankles to elevate me up until i was stretche as far as i could go, and then lowering myself as far as my ankle could bend, do those for a few minutes several times a day and it ought to help. It's also just an excellent stretch in general, i do it everytime I get up

Have you tried Dit Da Jow?

Have you tried soaking in hot water daily or so, preferably in Magnesium Salts (Epsom salts)? Heat improves circulation, and as the blood is involved in carrying building materials and removing toxins and wastes, a lot of healing is approximately proportional to bloodflow (why people scar easier on their shins than their faces).

Vitamins are important, especially vitamins C and E for healing.

Taking it easier and having rest days in which you (and you're poor bod) recooperate, is a good idea also.

I had leg problems on and off for a while and I found two pretty good ways to combat any strain.

The first was making sure I properly warmed up and warmed down and included plenty of stretches for the lower back and legs as those muscle groups are all connected.

Secondly I visited my ostepath and she explained that all the kicking I was doing was strengthening my legs but some of my leg muscles had yet to stretch to accomodate the growth in other areas. So she did some work on my outer thigh muscles where she systematically pummelled them with her elbow. My thighs were bruised but it certainly loosened everything up.

Hope this makes some sense.

Along with the vitamins I've found potassium and magnesium dietary supplements help a lot, and drink water until you slosh.
