Common Sense

Today we mourn the passing of an old friend by the name of Common Sense. Common Sense lived a long life but died in the United States from heart failure on the brink of the new millennium. No one really knows how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.

He selflessly devoted his life to service in schools, hospitals, homes, factories helping folks get jobs done without fanfare and
foolishness. For decades, petty rules, silly laws, and frivolous
lawsuits held no power over Common Sense.

He was credited with cultivating such valued lessons as to know
when to come in out of the rain, why the early bird gets the worm, and that life isn't always fair.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't
spend more than you earn), reliable parenting strategies (the
adults are in charge, not the kids), and it's okay to come in
second.

A veteran of the Industrial Revolution, the Great Depression, and
the Technological Revolution, Common Sense survived cultural
and educational trends including body piercing, whole language,
and "new math." But his health declined when he became infected with the "If-it-only-helps-one-person-it's-worth-it"
virus.

In recent decades his waning strength proved no match for the
ravages of well intentioned but overbearing regulations. He
watched in pain as good people became ruled by self-seeking
lawyers.

His health rapidly deteriorated when schools endlessly
implemented zero-tolerance policies. Reports of a six-year-old
boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate, a
teen suspended for taking a swig of mouthwash after lunch, and
a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student only worsened
his condition. It declined even further when schools had to get
parental consent to administer aspirin to a student but could not
inform the parent when a female student was pregnant or wanted an abortion.

Finally, Common Sense lost his will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband, churches became businesses, criminals received better treatment than victims, and
federal judges stuck their noses in everything from the Boy Scouts to professional sports. Finally, when a woman, too stupid to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot, was awarded a huge settlement, Common Sense threw in the towel.

As the end neared, Common Sense drifted in and out of logic
but was kept informed of developments regarding questionable
regulations such as those for low flow toilets, rocking chairs, and
stepladders.

Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and
Trust; his wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason. He is survived by two stepbrothers: My Rights, and Ima Whiner. Not many attended his funeral because so few
realized he was gone.

:( I'm gonna miss him....

Very nicely put.

Read in the paper the other day about a woman in America who was awarded a large amount of money when she sprained or broke 'cant recal which' her ankle after triping up in a large store. What did she trip over? Her own son.

Where's the logic?

Dumbest thing I've heard was about someone taking Nike to court because they tripped over their shoelaces!!

Not quite as bad as the 'do not iron clothes whilst wearing them' disclaimer that some manufacturers are putting on products.

This is due to someone suing a company after burning themselves.

Someone actually ironed something whilst they were wearing it?? Damn, thats stupid!

You mean you're not meant to? So how do I get the creases in my do-bok to line up?

You could try leaving it in a heap on the floor like I do with my Gi.... it gets lots of creases then. They might not line up, but you can't have everything ;)

Apparently a lady fell out of a window, from the 40th floor and was killed!

She was ironing the curtains at the time!

......and how about you must first find out what the 'intentions' are of an intruder in to your home in the middle of the night before you seriously harm or even kill him in your quest for self-defence and protecting what is rightfully yours?

Come to sunny South Africa where everything is free-for-all (subject to conditions) :)

Yeah! I was WONDERING where 'Common Sense' had gone!?

Perhaps we should all pray for a miracle to 'repeat' that two-thousand year old trick of revival .......?
...... or perhaps we should just change the system of 'party politics' which enables politicians to live in a world parallel to that of us ordinary folk and who by clever manipulation of the laws & regulations actually coerce us to support the systems.!?!?
I believe they have actually manipulated the 'demise' of Common Sense because he had too much of a good influence on us ordinary folk and showed us that we actually don't need the 'gravy-trainers' to live a fulfilling life.

It's just a thought!

Why didn't Common Sense just keel over when they had the huge payout from the guy who drove the Winabaygo on the freeway, engaged cruise-control and went into the back to make a coffee? Oh yeah, they gave him a new Winabaygo too.... :(

Sadly I'm VERY serious.

I'm pretty sure if you do a search you'll find out full details of the story (it'd help if you spell Winabaygo properly :) ). I learnt about it in the law subjects that I did last year. All about liability and responsibility.

It's pretty stupid, but until the law changes...

It's hard to work out where to draw the line. It's a political hot potato. The insurance companies and solicitors are the ones making all the money. I even know solicitors and agents who have paid up on nonsence claims just so they won't have to be bothered with going to court! I gotta hope it doesn't happen to me because I'm hard-headed enough to want to legally fight anyone who does claim liability against me when the insurance company would just say 'pay it and move on'. * gets off the soap box *
