I apologize if this question has been asked before. Can anyone tell me the differences between TKD and TSD? I don’t really see any differences.

Thanks KickChick. This clears a few things up for me. I still don't have a firm grasp on the history of Korean MA. But I'm learning a few things hear and there.

Korea history is quite tricky to remember, especially all the names and places and previous styles

I'm in Tang Soo Do. I think we have more of an emphasis on hands as well as the elaborate foot techniques. From what TKD people I've seen, from open tournaments, I noticed that they don't have much of an emphasis on clean technique or defense. They just keep coming and attacking with no sense of style. It may just be the individual schools who aren't teaching their students proper form, but I'm hoping that it isn't the general TKD population in general. Of course, that could only be the tournament population. Nonetheless, I don't have any problem with the cheap TKD schools around my area. I kick their ass in the tournaments every time. Call it arrogance if you will, but I call it bad teaching on their part.

Finally someone who understands the difference between sport karate and survival karate.
I teach in Tae Soo Do also, some of our students leave and go to TKD schools coming back a year or so later with brownbelt up. When we put them in the ring to spar, they can't not only hold their own rank, but most often our purplebelts defeat them easily. Same age, rank, size and experience to let you know we don't place a 15 yr old bblk(which we have none of) in ring with 20 yr old same rank. Won't rank as fast in TSD, but will be able to handle yourself.

I think TSD usually has better overall MAs simply because most other TSD schools i've visited have a large emphasis on traditional technique and haven't been corrupted by newer western federations like the WTF (no offense) or other "sport only" federations. True, I've still seen the beaurocracy of the 'big money for blackbelt' type of thing happen in TSD schools. I'm pretty sure the money thing is happenning to all styles right now though.

I'm not sure what group of TaeKwonDo students you all have seen but in my TaeKwonDo group, ITA, we always win against any Tae Soo Do student...

Heh, we also whoop the tsd guys and everyone else in tournaments. The wtf guys are not used to being punched to the face or anywhere on the head. We also use mostly lead leg kicks.

Opinions may be a little biased, figuring most here study Taekwondo. :D

*pre-emptive strike*

It's never Style vs. Style, it's Person vs. Person.

And now, back to your regularly scheduled thread...

i actually have been taught tkd and tsd at the same time by the same master which was awsome because tsd fillls the holes that tkd doesn't cover and they actually work together very well. and actually when i went to open tournements i had no problem winning in the sparring.
