Hi all. I have been a student of hapkido for almost 2 months now. I have been doing punch defenses. I can already feel reflexes kicking in. so heres my question:

When training alone, what are some reflex drills a person can do at home? any suggestions? we dont have class every night, but just looking for ideas for when im not in the dojo and dont have a partner. thanks in advance!

They are expensive but the punch dummies with the lights where you have to react and punch it quick and hard.
Otherwise I would say focus pad stuff

You can buy a "reactor ball" from here

http://www.saqinternational.com/equipment/detail.asp?cc=&pid=SAQ13&ptid=2&subCat=

I use one and find them good for quick reactions as you don't know where the thing is going to bounce.

Or maybe use one of their visual acuity rings. Or a peripheral vision trainer. You could easily make one of these, rather than paying for what is, in effect, a hula hoop with coloured quarters and a stick with a ball on it, respectively.

Shadow boxing is good as long as you are using mental imagery to visualise your opponent.

Generally speaking, I think it's rather hard to practice your defensive reflexes without a partner. When you practice on your own, perhaps you should focus on conditioning or on form and technique. Use imaginary partners, and focus on your footwork, it's much easier to refine movements solo than it is to train reflexes.

Just my experience.
