The best solo ever was the one I did on "How the Angels Wept" by Edenfall. Well, it was the best one I ever did, anyways
Seriously though there are too many great ones to say there is a "best solo." My favourites are Randy Rhoads on "Crazy Train" by Ozzy, Dimebag Darrell on Pantera's mellower moments, particularly "10's," Slash on "Sweet Child o' Mine" by Lines n' Noses, Kirk Hammet's widdlefest on "Master of Puppets" by Metallica and Throes of Dawn's "Spring Blooms with Flowers Dead"

From a technical point of view I think that some of the best guitar soloing has to be on Steve Vai's Fire Garden album.
Overall though, for me, it would have to be Dave Gilmour playing the solos on Comfortably Numb.

Gotta agree on that one, its an awsome passage of music. Also Joe Satriani can pluck a guitar a bit :D

i like a lot of solos played by children of bodom just for the sheer speed and difficulty. try children of decedence for a listen.

Doubt its the best, but Champagne Supernova by Oasis, "Live" - still send shivers down my spine after 9 years of playing it!

Music is always best served up live if you ask me. If I'm in my car I love sticking Pink Floyd's Pulse album on and playing High Hopes or Comfortably Numb at full blast. I'm almost as irritating as those guys with the 10 Mega Watt sub bass woofer things pounding out dance music outside my house at night :D

True - theres nothing better than a live album; sthe sound of the crowd going crazy and singing along. Have got Oasis Wembley gigs on DVD live, and they are superb. Even the smaller gigs are great, so intimate. Also love Nickelback, Nirvana and Manics all live. Live is GREAT!!

One that I think is great yet I'm sure you'll never hear another person list it is the guitar solo near the end of "Tribute" by tenacious D. Also I'm a big fan of the solo for "Like a Stone" by audioslave... simple yet awesome

I think when it comes to great solos I go for simplicity over a widdle fest.
Thinking of good solos I think Dave Gilmour's stuff is pretty much up there for me. Most of the ones already mentioned but there's a great one on the Animals album. I think its on Dogs where he does this really layered solo using loads of harmonies.
Some of the more note intensives solos other guitarists do just leave me cold - While you got to appreciate their skill and mastery of technique they just don't move you in the way that some of the other guitarits can, even with just a couple of notes.
On a side note for those of you into Pink Floyd - Roger Waters is supposed to be playing witht the rest of the band for the Live8 gig!

There are SO many. And you have to face it that their are so many good as well as pants guitar players out there.
Me being one of the latter :D
2 that frequently get me going are:
Van Halen "Eruption"
and "Dokken's "Dream Warriors".
