Im still new to the Vale Tudo side of MMA. But my teacher says I have a knack for grappling and submissions. My question is this...Is there any way to escape or counter a rear naked choke? I dont see how unless you are grossly stronger and bigger than your opponent. any input would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah, keep your chin tucked in and to the side. Failing that and they get your arm under your neck, place both your hands on their elbow, push up and move your head down.

When you tuck your neck in, they'll probably pull on your forehead or push up on the bridge of your nose to expose your neck so I like to keep my hands around my neck to protect it.

thanx a lot for the help. i never thought of that. funny how some things that seem so plain, simple and easy after you understand them..seem impossible when you're trying to figure them out.

Good advice from Bon :p

Basically you need to protect your neck & disrupt his positioning. How you do this depends on the position you are in.

If he crosses his ankles over your hips there are leg locks you can go for but you need to do it before the choke is established.

If you're facing upwards with him on your back it's a good idea to try to get one of his hooks out of your hips and slide your butt over that leg. Ideally the foot that is on the other side to the arm he's choking with - then try to turn to face him (if you've moved over his right leg and he's choking with his left arm you turn to your left - so his pulling with the choke helps you turn.)

You may just end up in his guard but that's better than where you came from!

Often I scoot over the leg so far that I come around and get cross-body.

If your hands are free and you can drop down then do so. Keep your chin tucked to protect your throat. If you can't drop out, reach round the back of their legs to distract them, if it doesn't, make a grab for their hamstrings, it's bloody painful.

A hard thing to do - relax and dont panic - this is why when the BJJ guys are so comfortable in these positions as many people tap before the move is even on.

Still better to avoid it - push up on the bridge of his nose, spetum area to realease the hold - still it depends on why you are bing choked.

The way I learnt it, you're meant to lean forward with a lot of forcee and bring your elbow into their neck hard.

When you are in a rear naked choke, your opponent will have your back. Your opponent will only have control if both hooks are in. If his feet are crossed, place your leg over his shins, and triangle your legs and put pressure. This can be done on your opponents single leg if not crossed.

All good advice.

Also, if it his right fore-arm choking you, put your left hand onto his right elbow and pull it into (yup) the choke while pushing (yup) your throat into his right elbow....it will make sense when you do it.

Make sure everyone can see he is just using a neck crush :D

Use your right hand fingers to attack his fingers where he is gripping himself. (oooh vicar)
