fight 1
k-1 MAX rules
Jordan "The terror" Tai(NZ) vs "pixie"(AUS)
Tai looked sloppy in the first two rounds, being thrown several times i nthe clinch and eating knees. turned it up in round 3 to score a standing 8 count, and really went to work with his hands to win a controversial decision (really should have gone another round) although Pixie was badly shaken from the third round and would have lost an extension, imo.
fight 2
K-1 HW rules (all fights from here on)
Tavita Tai(NZ) vs "The butcher"(AUS)
The butcher has a hilarious ring entrance, two big beefy guys in butcher aprons with cleavers come out and snarl etc... like some kind of WWE tag team. A classic boxer vs kicker match up with Tavita a real powerhouse pouncher with 11-1 record, all wins by ko with punches. however he couldnt put it together here, and after rattling the butcher i nthe first round... he turned off. second and third round he threw almost nothing, and lost the decision to a hard kicking butcher.
fight 3
Paulo(NZ) vs Mitch(AUS)
Mitch is a very experienced fighter, however comes into this fight against a young, very well built, and much larger opponent at 6'5 and 112kg. Paulo is an up and comer in NZ kickboxing after a good boxing career, and has really taken to kickboxing like a duck to water- he was smoothly combining kicks and punches, and using knees well in the clinch. judge stops the fight in the first round in favour of Paulo, Mitch just cannot fight back against the overpowering and surprisingly fast Paulo.
fight 4
Peter Sampson(NZ) vs Kevin Blanche(AUS)
two very tall fighters at 6'5 and 6'6, one a kyokushin fighter and the other (australian) a muay thai fighter. however in k-1 rules you cannot clinch and continually knee, frustrating Blanche. Blanche has a horrible guard and takes some sweet shots from peter, as well as some painful looking leg kicks. Pete finishes it in the second with an awesome spinning back kick, which badly winds Kevin. folowed immediately with a front kick just to make a sure, and finally a cracking right hand while kevins hands are lowered. kevin cant get up in time.
fight 5
Rony Sefo(NZ) vs Paul Slowinski(AUS)
another boxer vs kicker, with Rony being a hard hitter like his brother Ray, and Slowinski being renowned for hard kicks. from the outset Slowinski controls the fight, slamming Ronys legs over and over, and coming out better in the punching for the most part. Rony is as tough as his brother though, and takes a hammering for 3 rounds- unfortunately he just cant mount an offense until the final 30 seconds of the last round, when Slowinski has just punched himself out- he can barely get up after a slip, and comes close to being knocked out by Ronys big hands, but holds on to win a well deserved decision.
fight 6
Joe "The Sniper" White(NZ) vs Chris Johnson (AUS)
this is a special LHW fight with both fighters coming in at 81kg, however Joe White has a sizeable height advantage. on the other hand, Chris is in excellent physical shape, while Joe is tall and thin. however this is no problem for Joe- from the go he is firing hard and fast kicks and long range straight punches, using his knees to great effect when it gets in close. both fighters giving and recieving some serious hurting, but Joe is controlling the action and fights to a well deserved win. most action packed fight of the night- this was a real war, both fighters giving everything. Joe has some great leg catching ability and dumps Chris several times.
fight 7
Jason Suttie(NZ) vs Chris C(AUS)
Jason Suttie comes into this fight as a much smaller fighter, but has a granite chin, big heart and heavy hands. This one is a real war, as both fighters trade awesome shots. a scheduled 3 rounds, it is extended not once but twice, making a 5 round fight. however Suttie just has nothing left in the 5th, and Chris drops him with a flurry in the opening seconds. here comes the low point of the tournament- Sutties corner throws in the towel, too booing from the audience. Chris grabs the mike and really smacks it down on those who booed Suttie, saying that they should get in and give their all instead of being sideline warriors. I cant help but agree, anyone who gets into a ring deserves only cheers, especially after a huge performance like that.
fight 8
Alexei Ignashov(NZ) vs Peter Graham(AUS)
most dissapointing fight of the night- Graham is busy, but at no point does he phase Iggy. Iggy on the other hand- does nothing! he manages to sneak a draw with some nice handwork in the third, and then again by rocking Peter in the 4th... but in the 5th he has nothing, while Peter is still going strong. Peter wanted to win this fight much more, and did so with a split decision. Iggy was a huge dissapointment, I dont know what hes doing, but if his plan is to throw away his career hes doing a good job of it. I think any of the other HW winners on this card could also have beaten him this night. he gassed after the second round despite having a very low workout... I just dont know what to say. this is however a huge chance for Graham who has had a lot of difficult attracting the attention of k-1 japan.
some great fights, this is honestly one of the best cards Ive seen in a while, because all these guys are fighting for international recognition, and put their all into these fights.
