View Full Version : Toughest people on earth?

I've done a bit of travelling in my time and I noticed that people from some countries seem to be generally tougher than others. Especially eastern europeans seem to be very tough to me, enjoying fighting and complaining very little. I know this is a very broad generalisation, but that's just what it feels like.
Do you think some nations have tougher people than others? Which?

I'd say Tibetans are pretty tough ba$tards. Look at the climate, conditions, geography. I just finished listening to the book "Dalai Lama, my son" by the mother of the Dalai Lama. What she describes in her book, makes the Tibetans a pretty tough bunch.

Very true Kurohana, the toughest have got to be people that have lived in harsh conditions for centuries, to many of them we'd look like the super rich living a life of luxury!

Nepal is very similar to Tibet. The Ghurkas seem to display that toughness pretty well too!

Yeah, according to my father the Ghurka people were used by the brits to quell uprisings in India. Supposedly, the crowd often dispersed at the mere sight of truckloads of Ghurka troops just ITCHING to pull the trigger. At least, that's what my father told me.
Most boxing, muay thai and wrestling clubs in Scandinavia have a definite majority of islamic immigrants as practitioners, compared to the relatively low number of immigrants in the countries. I think this means that these people are also tougher and have a tougher mindset and more agressive nature than the local scandinavians. True?

And don't forget Luke and Anakin and Han
(although he is originally from coruscant)!
They also have some of the best dancers. (see episode 6)
Really I don't think living in an area will make you tough. It depends on the individual person. But if any county had the best fighters it would be Canada, because there are moose in Canada and they have pot on their flag.
THE END.
I think it makes a difference where you live. If you've grown up in some posh area where you never experience any physical (or otherwise) conflicts, you'll never be accustomed to them. If you see them all the time, you get used to it.

Oh, in that case I agree...I wasn't thinking like that...I was thinking of the area in general not the behavior of the people..... I guess bigger cities might have better martial artist.....well not really, I still don't think it matters. I have a friend from Chicago IL who has done Muay Thai 3 years and there are people from where I live who have 2 years who are better. Of course I'd better not generalize 'cause thats only one person.
I'm of two minds.
People are usually a lot tougher than they give themselves credit for. As a biological entity the human body can adapt to a lot of hardships. However, the conditions you have been subjected to in growing up as well as your racial strain can lead to advantages in certain areas.
On the other hand, I would say Australian Aborigines and Maori's are some of the toughest.

Wait, lets clarify what we mean by "tough". Good martial artist or just tough generally? In that case I think Eskimo are pretty tough.
There's also mental toughness and physical toughness to consider...

From what I gather I suppose the japanese people were extremely tough in feudal Japan, since hierarchy, loyalty to your master and "rather-death-than-shame" seemed to be an important part of bushido and japanese culture itself. Hell, the shogun could ask a samurai who had dishonoured him to commit seppuku and cut out his own bowels! That tough! The Japan of today, I don't know.

i would have to say that Japanese people are generally pretty tough because of how they are supposed to act. i also think that canadians (in general) are pretty tough. you'd have to live here to understand why. samoans and most of the polenesian countries seem to have REAL tough guys too.

I was going to say the Freemen of Dune, but you beat me to it with the Tuscan raiders.
Once, at a bar in Africa, I met a French Foreign Legionaire, there with the UN. He was originally from New Zealand. He played rugby. Around 6'2", about twice my width, and of course not looking fat at all. I'd say he was the toughest guy I've personally ever become even marginally acquainted with.

Well, he was with the foreign legion. They have a reputation for having made self-abuse into an art form, so naturally he was tough, though people from the australian region are supposedly tough as well.
I read Dune. The reason the Fremen people and the Sardaukar elite troopers were so tough was that they had endured extremely harsh conditions for centuries on their respective planets. I believe this goes for the people on earth as well.
I'd put my money on some of the russian people though. The ones I know have a very tough attitude.

I picked watermelons when travelling around Australia, in the middle of their summer, it was 48 Celsius on the hottest day! I could just about cope! The Aussie workers were able to cope pretty well, but even they were suffering badly. They told me that the sheep-sheerers worked in conditions worse than that and for longer hours. That's pretty tough! If you've ever seen a sheerer they look pretty fit! Most of them can handle themselves in a fight too.

As the whole country is rubbish and they still plod on - also they never really produce **** fighters.
There arts are tough and they do very well in competitions, also a tough grizzled military.
And its bloody cold over there.
Some fit birds as well
