A few months ago i had a bad ankle injury from sparring and my foot hyperflexed, i damged both ligaments and my achilles tendon. I couldnt put any weight on the foot for a few days so i rested it. Once i could put weight on it again i started training but didnt do anything to aggrevate the injury, no running , kicking etc. About a month later the doc gave me the all clear but said i would have to re strenghthen it and stretch away the scar tissue. I began doing this but it still didnt feel right, so i decided to go to my sifu who is also a chinese bone doctor. His treatment lasted for about a week and this time it felt fine, it felt healed. After sfus tratment i just trained light for a few weks and didnt try to aggrevate the ankle. Im now again at the stage of stretching and strengthening but now im getting soreness and a feeling of weakness in the ankle when its fatigued or put in certain positions. Is this just weakness in the ankle i.e lost strength that i can rebuild, or does it sound like i have done some sort of perminent damage to the ankle.
It doesnt feel injured , but it does feel weak
I sustained the initial injury in Feb this year

any feedback would be great
damn injuries:woo:

It takes time - baby that ankle for as long as it takes! Try to strengthen those positions that feel weak.

do you think that starting running again would be wise to stenghten it, i havent gone running on it since i injured it
I have been doing calf raises and flexing my foot with weight strapped to it (to strengthen the front of the ankle)

Yes - but go easy - try a gentle jog 1st a take it from there. Above all - listen to your body and if in doubt - do less!

Cheers yoda, thanks for the advice i'll probably just go at a fast walking pace to start with, maybe for about a week then just gradually build it up again

Ah..ankle injuries, the pain in my life. Being made disabled from this type of injury where I broke my right ankle away back in '93. Injuries to the ankle are extremely common and can occur in any sport but more particularly in contact sports. "Turning over" one's ankle can occur at any time and are usually twisting type injuries. Immediate Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation is required for a period of 48 hours (RICE). In cases of partial ligament rupture with considerable swelling, strapping may be recommended for anything upto 3 weeks. However, in most cases of ankle sprain, mobility exercises and gentle weight-bering should be commenced early on. Anti-inflammatory drugs may be prescribed by the doctor and after 48 hours heat and ultrasound can be used.

A wobble-board can be and should be used to aid the recovery of the ankle and it will help with strength as well as balance. Flexing the ankle in all directions and stretching the calf will do many wonders, toe and heal raises will increase dorsiflexion as well as going up and down small slopes. Running is not recommended at first but should be built up, ie. you must make your ankle learn again by doing things slowly and in gentle bursts.

If you mess things up then you will pay the price as the ankle is the main weight loading source on the body, take care of both ankles because you can never replace them. I should know... Having a frame on my lower right leg for a year was bad enough, especially when the wire goes through your bones and your leg or ankle is broken and then the frame acts as a bone growing machine. For me it never worked and now I have a semi-false ankle or part plastic ankle and you do not want that, so take care of your body and take it slow but sure.

I hope you get better and stronger.
