...Outside of the ring I mean, in a fight? And if you have, how has it affected you and your training?

Yes I have - how did it affect my training? It started it :D

Pretty much the same as Yoda.
More specifically I was about eight years old and a bully at school decided to show me the back of hit fist a few times. I started training two weeks later. After taking some time off to grow up a bit I resumed my training two years ago.
I think most people who are in MA have been beaten up outside the club at some point. I started because of daily pastings from bullies too.

Im rather proud of the fact, that i was a pretty weak person but i never, ever got beaten up. I just seam to have a knack for avoiding fights. Lucky me.
Who am I?
07-Jun-2003, 11:58 PM
I used to run all the time, now I still run but faster.
I guess I'm the opposite to most people, I started because I beat someone up!
I've never really been beaten up physically apart from a couple of hits, only mentally and crushed the old ego :p
I started because I was beaten up by five guys (18+) when I was 12.

I had been training for about four years when I was beaten up!! It was a very humbling experience and it made question my training, as you can well imagine.
I now train much more realistically and tend to steer away from competition (although I have had some success). My beating still haunts me 10 years later and reminds me to keep my training real.

so what? i am still alive, right? i managed to survive! .... this is what i used to say to myself after every battle(they throw punches i try to dodge them-never managed to do it)!
I used to be the fat guy they all like to hit!(sooooo silky)
This happened years ago when i was little, fat and scared!
The little scared guy is still inside but the outer shell is bigger, stronger and faster! :D

I started my MA 'cause my Grandfather made my Dad make me. The only person who has beaten me up was my brother a few years ago.

I never been beaten up, had a few confruntations, but never beaten up. I started because of the fitness/self-defense aspect and my love of MA's. Hopfully i can avoid any fight in the future, or sefend myself in one.

reasonably regularly at ages 6-16. Nowadays, the buggers tend to leave me alone. One guy, when I was 14, he was going into the army in a year, so in good shape. He'd been ticking me off and beating up on me in public and all my mates wanted me to do him. I went in and he took me down, sprawled over me and almost broke my nose. Some ****ing mates I had, they all cleared off...

Myself and my younger brother had a big fight with some local guys, there was 10 of them and me and my brother. We were all drunk and it was kicking out time.
The fight ended up in the crown court with myself and my brother getting aquitted and 5 of them going down. Myself and 4 of them went to hospital to be checked out.
It was a real eye opener, well closer actually...........
I have to say the drink played a big part but I was trying to protect it and to walk away but there were having none of it. Still got 4 of em before I was pulled over and kicked over 60 times (got to see the CCTV in court) hard to believe it was me at the bottom.
Luckily most of my work was out of the camera's sight, they other lot were at fault but thats life. Still my training helped no end even after 14-16 bottles of woodies!!!!!!!!
Funny morning after, brusied but ok so no real damage to me.
This is why I am worried about using clenched fists in a fight I can win without it, I had to learn the hard way, facing GBH with intent and a fray at one point (Fray is 1 below a riot) - not proud of it as I paid during the 9 months of court cases! - not big or clever, still had no choice - this is the worst I have been done in, did not know there was that many of them, just people everywhere and cos I was so drunk and adrenalin it was hard to know who was an attacker or innocent. Still only been traing for 6 years then.
I know my mistakes and wont make em again.

well I was the scrawny weak nerdy kid with glasses so bullies alwatys liked to pick on me so I hurt them enough to stoip them from hurting me.
I have however been racked a few times which is when I realy decided I didnt like to be picked on.
I alwaya had a temper but tended not to get in to fights.
But my training in MA didnt start until I was given two semi lethal pieces of sharp steel. I had to learn how to use them

Never been in a fight, although there've been a few confrontations here and there. In all the cases the antagoniser (them) has stood down.
Long may this continue.

-I get beat up on by my students all the time. BTW-NEVER train your wife to 3rd dan levels, espescilly to being a regional champ and top ten competitor in national anf world ratings.(Ouch!). On the street, when I was 21 and working as a bouncer, while in college, I had a run in. I made the mstake of coming in to the bar I was working security at on my night off, and one of my buddies was celebrating his birthday and insisted I had a few drinks w/ him. I figured w/ my bodyweight even a few shots wouldn't faze me. I don't drink and had my first and last introduction to the stolie (spelling?) kamikazee. I had enough sense to give my car keys to my girlfriend, but insisted that we stop for food. BIG mistake in more ways than one. There was a guy who I ejected from the club two nights before. He saw that I was having trouble standing up and decided to take advantage of the situation. He told me to step outside or he'd jump me right there, while his friend was seemingly trying to talk him down. In my brainless state, I walked outside trying to calm the situation down. Needless to say, his friend blindsided me and both threw down on me. I tried to sidekick the first guy in the knee, missed, and fell on my rear. Then I just sat there mad at myself, while he grabbed my hair and proceeded to punch the top of my head (I'm sure this hurt his hand far more than it did me). Finally, it dawned on me that his groin was right in front of me and punching it may be a good idea. When I got up his friend ran into my jab (Lord knows I would never had found his face on my own that night). They began a war of words rather than a physical attack at that point. I really was lucky; they were not quite as effected by alcahol as I was, but the first one was a boxer w/ decent experience. If we had all been sober, I'm very confident that I would have been able to physically handle them both pretty easily, however, if I'd been sober I'd have avoided the situation in the first place. If they had been more sober though, I'd probably been hamburger. P.S. -I ended up vommitting up the food afterwards anyway.

I got beatup twice. The first time was my fault. I was picking on a guy in front of his big brother. He beat the crap out of me and I deserved it.
The second time the local bully (6'4" in the 8th grade) put my head through some drywall when I was teasing him. I fell backward and headbutted his nose. He started crying. To this day all my friends think I did it on purpose, but I was just sitting there trying not to cry myself.
Been in alot of fights after those two, but I managed to win, or at least stick and run like hell.

Used to get beat by my step-father, that's what started me on this path. Since then? Nope. I either avoid them or make sure they ain't walking away (crawl or carried, take your choice).

First of all I would like to great you all. First time here.
I've been never beated up. I was bullied when younger but since my 18th, I always got my battles won. Mental and phisical. I was always a tall kid though I was thin. I've started Kick boxing and Thai boxing at 16, then I've wandered through Aikido, Ju jitsu, TKD and a bit of kung fu. I know you all must be thinking but I tell you one thing, I've created my own fighting style and until now no one ever beat me. And the more difficult the fight the better. I usually say that I have a bit of a samurai soul. Anyway, never back down. But if you do it's not always cowardice. A great master knows when a fight can't be won.
cheers

I'm allot like you craigwarren, I am astonishingly good at avoiding fights. I could be surrounded by a pack of angry vicious Chiwawas and still manage to talk my way out of it. But, alas, there are people in this world with less sense than a Chiwawa... and thats how I got into my first fight. At school, some guy who thought he was "all dis' n' all dat'" felt that because I happened to be standing in "his corridor" that he could beat the **** out of me... and unfortunatly, he wasn't wrong...
Anyway, that made me realise I needed to do something about my combat abilities, but rather than doing the normal thing and starting a martial art or becoming an angry thug myself, I started training myself from the huge collection of martial arts films I had collected over the year (I have always been a martial arts fan). I was looking at them in slow-motion and mimmiking the moves, then gettin my friends to come round so I could try them out on them :D! Anyway, I felt for some strange reason that this made me a good fighter... and I wasn't completely mistaken.
The second fight I ever got into was at collage, 3 guys all tried to steal my bike in the car park... ordinarily I would have let them take it, but it was MY NEW BIKE! so I faught back, supprisingly mannaged to kick the crap out of 2 of them, but the 3rd was a close call... anyway, they ran away but I came out of it with some nasty bruises. And thats when I decided maybe I should do some real training, and thats when I briefly tried Karate, trained Judo with my friend, and started Muay Thai under the instruction of Master Lec at my local leisure center.
IT HELPED! YAY! The next, and last (to date) fight I got into was actualy last weekend when I was jumped by 4 guys in the roughest part of my area, I mannaged to fight them off, I only got hit twice. But, however, if they had had a knife it would have been allot more serious. Anyway, I think that incedent woke something up inside me cus when I next spared with my friend I was doin 5 times better than I normaly do in defence. The gimp couldnt hit me! Maybe your life being in danger unlocks your true potential.
Anyway, i'm doin allot better with my training after that experience... I just hope I never need to use my training again, but in this world full of people that could be out-witted by a senile Chewawa I find it difficult to believe i'll never be in a fight again in my entire life :(
(and btw, if you haddn't guessed, i'm not mad keen on Chiwawas... vicious little ankle biters  )

guess what! yep ive had the XXXX kicked out of me before too!
Im no little guy but i was caught unawares in a club! took a 2x4 in the ribs before i knew what was happening! then got a right pasting!
after that i got quite aggressive with people!then i had kids( that calmed me down ).
Ive started Aikido though because i work in an inner london school and i have seen Teachers get hammered by irate parents! and im not having that done to me!
also it builds your confidence which can defuse a situation before it starts!

Ouch! I bet thats the worst kind of beating, mental and physical, must take some recovering to get over..............
I've never really been beaten up, just the odd bruise. I started MA's when I was very young, not saying I was the best fighter because of that, but even at that age an understanding of fighting could help me keep out of trouble!

Does getting beat up by your older brothers count? In that case ,all the time! I was the only girl in the family and the youngest child - my mother was partial to boysand the boys knew it, so..... .
As far as taking Tae Kwon Do - it was more of an activity, but as for wanting to use it to fight - After what I took as a kid (honestly, I had one brother that almost strangled me to death on more than one occasion - for fun) I decided when I was grown I wouldn't have to take getting beat up.
I even reminded them that as adults, it they ever him me, I could have them arrested and mamma couldn't do a thing about it!! :D :D
I actually wanted to have control over what violence I might have to use. As I stated in another thread on in the Martial Arts forum - If I was defending myself, I could either hit the attacker with a side kick or the nearest lamp! ;)

I've been in really too many scuffles to count, been sucker punched a couple times (well, more attempted than landed :p) but I've never been beaten up.
I'd just attribute it to a combination of luck and good reflexes. Almost everytime someone has tried to punch me, I've managed to just embarrass them by ducking or maneuvering, even before I'd ever had any training. Couple times managed to push them over a chair or desk, and once (after a year of training) I managed to feint and trip the person.
Only 3-4 of the incidents I've had I'd really consider a 'fight'. Only once I went to the ground where I managed to stay 'on top' as I remember, but that was years before training. Others have all went my way, fortunately. I'm looking to keep it that way!

hey, i haven't really been in a fight, ever. but, i just wanted to congradulate u guys because if those stories actually are true u people have really done well in battle. good job!!
I began goju-ryu when I was 13 (im only a year older now) but i started because i love mortal kombat (the PS2 game) and after years of playing it sparked an interest to the martial arts and ive been training 5 times a week (which probably isnt very much compared to others). Now that im training im much more confident, stronger, faster, and more knowledgable, which will help me avoid fights or come out clean if the fight cannot be prevented. oh ya and has anybody here played Tenchu: wrath of heaven for PS2,,,, its the coolest martial arts and ninja game ever made,

maybe for no erason I´m proud of the fact that I never lost a streetfight...
Shure till was about 12 everybody tortured me, but the effect was agression... I guess I beat up a lot of guys, and I started MA to increese my ability to do so... But because of my JKD training about a jear ago I do not fight on the streets anymore... my trainer(do you say that?) was realy drastic, his oppinion was that everyone who attks you on the street should die... now I´m scared of streetfight... don´t want to kill anybody...

GOTTA LOVE NY!
I lost my fair share of battles, had my nose broke twice, front tooth cracked in half too many bruises to count, brusied ribs was the worst, it didnt really affect my training, i wasnt really into ma at that point i was just inlove with fighting! Now it effects my ability since i know what its like to get hit and i know what the pain is like and its a HUGE benefit in and out of the studio.

Never been in an actual fight. I wrestle with my brother sometimes (an allways win, I'm dreading him hitting puberty). I've never actually hit someone with the intention of really hurting them, or ever had anyone do that to me. I started MA for the "just in case" factor, but more for fitness and enjoyment.
Used to get into a lot of verbal fights, but they stopped as soon as I started high school.

I started a MA due to geting bullied at school went to a Karate Kyushindo aimed at Self Defence, left after a few years of training, recently had a guy abuse me in the street for the way i dress, a drunk may i add, and i realised that i wouldnt of been able to defend my self if that guy had pulled anything on me, so i've decided to start a MA again, but i dunno which one even though i'm thinking of Tae Kwon Do

I always protested against fighting... yet got in a lot of them. Never tried to fight back though....
First time someone was pickin on me, pushin me almost poked my eye out. Then threw my head into a brick wall... All my friends stood up for me, and I almost broke out to start fighting him. He ran away when I started screamin at him and got real mad... it was kinda funny.
Next time, someone wanted to fight me but I didn't do anything. Ended up with endless lumps on my head and face, but took it all straight til he was done.
Next time, someone punched a few times in my collar bone, and once in my throat, pretty hard too, but didn't leave a bruise or anything. The fight was broken up when I grabbed a shovel.
Last fight was 2.5 years ago in front of a mcdonalds all I did was dodge his hits, and grab his arm, it would have ended in a stalemate if he hadn't suckerpunched me, compressing the skin under my eyebrow in between his ring and my skull, causing it to rip and bleed. I was mad, but didn't fight back.
Each time I was worried if I fought I'd get suspended... my high school was gay, I got suspended for being beaten to a pulp. After the last fight I decided that if a fist was thrown I wouldn't stop until he stopped... breathing... or gave up, whichever came first ^_^... but I haven't gotten into a fight since, nor have I found a martial art that suits me... lookin at Jeet Kune Do and Qwuan Kui Dao though...

When I was younger I was really skinny and got bullied for that. I never took a real beating but I did get pushed about a lot because of it and the theat was there. So my weight training was my self defence. Before that I did karate for a year and a half but that didnt help a bit even though I was good in the dojo. Once I put on muscle my confidence grew and that was my self defence. Now I do muay thai and that is like the cherry on the cake.

I never really got beaten up, I started when I was very young because my best friend started it, so I started with him.
I don't think I was ever builled in any sense, well I was, but it had no effect on me at all really :P Just those people who you don't respect or care about that think it's funny to make fun of someone because of their backround (I'm greek, born in australia).
But yeah, I had more people backing me than them, so it kidna just bounced off and we didn't bother.
But next time I've decided, if anyone insults me because of my backround, I will gladly rearrange their face.

Check this out... not only did I get beaten up but it was in the dojo!
I had recently decided to resume martial arts training after a long layoff. I was training in a Shaolin Kempo school which was unlike anything I had ever learned. ( I should point out that in my previous training I had only reached underbelt ranking).
One day the instructor decided we would practice some ground fighting techniques. Actually it was a takedown we were practicing but he said once we hit the floor we would have to protect ourselves because our opponent would be allowed to hit us. (he wasn't lying) So I was selected for the first demo. I get paired with a fairly aggressive guy who had obvious experience in wrestling. No problem, I think...I'll do my best and move along. Big mistake. This guy throws me down, straddles my chest and starts bashing me in the face for all he's worth. The instructor is 2 feet away watching me get smashed. After about the 5th shot in the kisser instinct and a little boxing experience take over so i'm able to slip every 2nd or 3rd punch but it's really getting ugly. when he missed a punch and landed an elbow across the bridge of my nose, the instructor finally stopped it. Needless to say I was pissed. Not because I took a beating, but because until this day I still don't know what I was supposed to learn that night. Oh and by the way, I was the only woman in that class. So maybe I was meant to learn how to cover facial bruises with makeup.
I study martial arts because I love it. When I get my black belt I will spend more time studying grappling.
Needless to say I don't train there anymore. I don't mind taking my lumps but I don't want to entertain sadistic instructors.
Now I train in a very reputable TKD school.

That's really sad story Sway (with happy ending though). I cannot belive there are people like that as instructors.
Anyway, the "thing" that got me started in MA happened when I was visiting my cousin who lived quite far from my place. It was late at night, in a park where teens usually gathered to drink beer and meet others. One guy asked for a smoke and I refused - next thing I knew I was hit with a straight right to my nose and knocked down. My nose broke and started bleeding. What really bothered and ashamed me was that I was - of course mad as hell after that - but I had no guts to do anyhting since I didn't really know anyone else but my cousin there and he was out of sight ... so I just got up and gave my pack of smokes. The guy and his friends then just walked away. I was pissed at my self for being to scared to do anything.
2 days later I started kickboxing. Why? So that next time I could beat the smoke-asking-guy (and the rest of the town).
Now, 14 years later I'm still practising (Muay Thai) and I've never had to use my skills outside the dojo. Never been even close.
Well, I did quit smoking too...
