Hi MAPers

Saw a place online today selling an NEC DVD+R/RW for £87 inc VAT

Can anyone beat that? Damned good deal if you ask me!

That's what I just got ... I got it for $120 US ... I'm not sure what that works out to in UK pounds.

I got it at newegg.com

One thing of note, though (that I found out after I got my drive): DVD+R isn't officially recognized by whatever organization manages the DVD format regulations.

DVD-R is the officially recognized format.

That said, though, the +R and -R format are close enough that it shouldn't really ever be a problem except on a very small percentage of exceedingly picky DVD players.

The DVD+R discs that I've burnt in my drive play just fine in the two DVD players that I've tried them in.

Cheapest I've seen is $400 AU.

It'll still take 2 hours to burn a DVD though won't it ?

Depends on the amount of data burning. It does take a while. This DVD burner I've got will only write at, I believe, 2.4x for DVD burning (though it burns CDs at 26x, I think ... I can't remember all the specs).

But, as with many things, it takes as long as it takes :) If it's doing the job, then that's what matters.

The usual standard for DVD+R is x2.4 for RW and x4 for just R

+R gets my vote over -R even though the blank discs are more expensive.

That is cheap, where did you see it at that price?

Bowlers near the Trafford centre at Manchester is a good place Yoda, loads or traders in a factory unit, you can get stuff dirt cheap.

Hehe - I wouldn't touch Bowlers with a barge pole. You know it gets raided by the Police every now & then? There's a good reason for that.

Here's where I saw the drive (http://secure.addonsonline.co.uk/addon/code/main.asp)

Thanks Yoda, I'll have a look.

It is a dodgy place, thought it's mainly the software thats dodgy. the software stands with the bouncers! :D Copied software, pron and DVD's.

I avoided it for my latest hardware updates, was worried about spending much there!
