Hi Guys I'm thinking of buying the Top Ten head gear made from a material know as I believe bayflex which is supposed to absorb and distribute the impact for a blow better than traditional leather. What do you guys think of the Top Ten brand and their head gear.

I worn one for the first time on Wednesday at boxing and I found it really uncomfortable.

I was so releaved when I got out the ring and could take it off; im definatly going to stick to the older foam headguards.

hmm - interesting subject. I'm talking from a kickboxing perspective here, but the principle is the same.

My coach (WAKO British Champ) wears a Top-Ten headguard and finds them good. He lent it to me for sparring the other week and I found it absolutely awful. It squashed my ears and I felt like my head was being compressed.

It really comes down to a 50/50. Some people like them and some people don't.

Exactly the same feeling I had. It really hit me near the temple. Because it's not a very soft material, it just kept rubbing and got on my nerves after a few minutes.

As soon as my few rounds in the ring were over, it can off straight away.

Yeah - I felt like my head was being squished. I also had funny marks on my face where the plastic like material had rubbed.

Not good in my opinion, and not exactly cheap.

Top Ten are one of only two manufactures that are accredited by the International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA). Top Ten have been used in many Olympic games and since their introduction knockouts in the Olympics have been reduced to less than 1%.

It's certainly not rare to see people sparring with Top Ten headgear on; a friend of mine has one and he loves it - it just didn't seem to do much for me, it just kept irritating me the way it relentlessly grinded against my eye socket/temple area.

Only 2 manufacturers are accredited by the AIBA? Who are they, because I'm sure I could think of more ;)

The two officially recognised by the AIBA are Top Ten and Greenhill. Other brands also carry the AIBA logo but I believe that they are made for them by the above two. More information can be found on the AIBA website
