Waiting to hear from Sussex University if their hall is available on the 11th June (Saturday) if so I need numbers - I can hire all of the hall or half of it.
I already have one Instructor - Zoltan Dienes
Come on then!
Oh and I'm sorting this out :)
Late for dinner
10-Mar-2005, 05:45 PM
Well there are a ton of martial artists in the south... what are you suggesting in terms of the way you will be organising this event? What sort of instructors and styles are you looking for.
Cheers, powchoy

If it gets off the ground I'll do what I can to get there and support it. I'll probably be living in Wales by then but I'll still have my room rented here until August, so I'd be happy to come back.
Some of our Lau Gar guys might be persuaded to join in and give a demonstration of techniques if you're sparse on instructors (don't think any are MAPers, but I could try to convert them).
Oh and where abouts is Sussex Uni...??

I am proposing to hire a sports hall at the University of Sussex - directions will be given nearer the time. If I have under 30 people I will have half the hall.
I am proposing a very similar format to the UK Meet format - where there are 3 to 4 matted areas and 3 to 4 Instructors running their class. Each class would be 45 mins long with a 5 to 10 min drinks break/changeover.
I don't care what martial arts teaches personally. I personally (as would MAP!) would be happier having qualified Instructors doing the teaching as they will demonstrating how to do the techniques safely and the people taking part will have a better impression of the art if its demonstrated properly.
I will get the hall confirmed as soon as possible - but will naturally need numbers. I will get the date confirmed first and then ask for instructors.
I would personally like to see - if we can have access to them - for purely selfish reasons I hasten to add, the following:
Systema
Choi Kwan Do
Fillipino MA
PP's
Lau Gar
Karate Jutsu
Aikido
Judo
Ninjitsu
Weapons MA
MMA
I would love to see Capoeira there too - even if I can't do it!
But it does depend at the end of the day who's available.
I need to see more interest! I'll get back again when I have the hall confirmed.

Even though you're hijacking my birthday, I'll do my best to get down there. With any luck might even be able to drag a chief instructor friend of mine, I'll get back to you on that bit of it.

Hi Melanie,
I'm interested in coming along too. For those who don't know, Sussex University is in Brighton; it's within very easy reach of London (about 45 minutes train ride from London Victoria).
I would personally like to see - if we can have access to them - for purely selfish reasons I hasten to add, the following:
Systema
Choi Kwan Do
Fillipino MA
PP's
Lau Gar
Karate Jutsu
Aikido
Judo
Ninjitsu
Weapons MA
MMA
I would love to see Capoeira there too - even if I can't do it!
That's a fantastic list. I believe there's a Systema seminar on 2nd April in Brighton, although I don't know the details, so you might be able to find an instructor on www.systemauk.com or ask them by e-mail info@systemauk.com
There's definitely traditional ninjitsu in Brighton. Check out the Myojo Dojo (headed by Zeb Glover) at http://www.myojo-dojo.com/initial_page.htm
The Brighton Judo Club would give you judo, although Zoltan's now teaching more MMA than karate, so he could cover throwing and groundwork rather well. Zoltan would no doubt be able to teach some PP's too.
There are at least three aikido schools based out of the Brighton Judo Club in Dorset Gardens. Tom Helsby (4th dan) is in Brighton and very good, plus there's also:
http://www.brightonaikido.co.uk/cgi-bin/dojo.pl
I know there's Capoeira locally too, although I'm not sure where it's based.
This could shape up to be an excellent day! :)

You on commission Sandy? ;)
All excellant suggestions and I shall attempt the convertions immediately! :D
Pleased to announce that I have booked the hall for the 11th June 2005 between 12:00pm to 4:00pm.
Right....instructors?
Jimmy - is this gonna be a problem?
Anyone else? I need between 10-12 to make this a good cross section.

I will let Levo if he is about do the MMA teaching as he is far better qualified than I am.
Melanie
13-Mar-2005, 12:15 AM
I have previously interviewed Sensei Tim Nicklin. :D
I am currently waiting to hear back from some other instructors - if any want to offer their assistance - please let me know. The list I mentioned on the previous page is just a wish list. If you feel you have something to offer and are a qualified Instructor - please contact me.
Simply put - this Meet is going on - if you can make it - come along! Nearer the time I will be confirming prices -
ALL ENTRY FEES WILL BE GOING TO IMPERIAL CANCER RESEARCH!!!

Some one else mentioned Zeb Glover i have done some stuff with him he would be worth getting hold off. As for interviewing Tim you should maybe if you get a chance have a proper sit down with him and chat he could fill more than a few pages. Its worth bearing in mind there are a lot of good teachers in the area who might not be on this forum and might not know about the meet.

He is not only a well versed MMA fighter, world champ and Black Eagle Society fighter at Eskrima and top JKD man to boot. I know him well, he knows his stuff and is one of those rare guys that makes it work for real. A true fighter in my opinion.

Just had confirmation from Robert Agar-Hutton - he will be doing One Fingered Fighting
Melanie is REALLY persuasive - I was meant to be flying out of the country on a business trip the day of the seminar but when she explained how much fun it was going to be and how it was for such a good cause... I couldn't resist coming to play.
IMPORTANT: Since Melanie has mentioned that I'll be teaching 'One Finger Fighting - O F F' and because I don't want you all to stay away chanting "PRESSURE POINTS - been there done that got the tee shirt"...
One Finger Fighting DOES have some - technical term coming up... pressure point 'STUFF' but is actually based on a much more simple idea...
In a fight you want to be able to chat to a friend, hold a full glass of beer without spilling any and still defeat your opponent :) :)
Well that's a bit of an exaggeration - The first I've ever made :D
But it IS about a variety of martial arts techniques that allow you to do the LEAST amount of work whilst getting the MOST amount of result.
Oh and will EVERYTHING I show you work ALL the time - probably not - but there will be some bruises you can look at the following day and say "Oh yeah THAT works" :) :) :)
I look forward to seeing you all.
All the best.
Robert.
P.s. Apologies to Rob Poynton in advance - I've included some of those lovely Systema thumb strikes into 'O F F ' - so if you spot me doing them and think "We do that" - You do!!!!! :) :) :)
Melanie
20-Mar-2005, 10:13 PM
OK - MY week of niceness is now over :D
I have got confirmed 6 instructors, two possibles (won't say any more for now) - Now it's over to you lot. For those of you coming along, please give me some indication of what you would like to see and I will try my best to arrange for it for you.
Please bear in mind that it has to be a recognised martial art, one that is practised in this country and will bring in plenty of bodies (and their subsquent money!)
I would love your help now, I want to see how many people are interested (who are coming for a start!) and what they want to see :)

Are you planning on 2 groups running at the same time like old UK meet or are you thinking of doing a 1 subject running through the day from each instructor so all people do all things?
Melanie
21-Mar-2005, 10:41 AM

I am proposing a very similar format to the UK Meet format - where there are 3 to 4 matted areas and 3 to 4 Instructors running their class. Each class would be 45 mins long with a 5 to 10 min drinks break/changeover.

Confirmation just recieved from Mike Flanagan for Sticking Sparring - Thanks member er...Mike Flanagan :D
Sticking sparring is my name for it - or 'Muchimi Kumite' to create a mish-mash of Okinawan & Japanese terminology. The idea is to create a means of a) preventing yourself from being struck by an assailant within your tactile zone, and b) to already be in physical control of the situation the moment it become tactile.

Nothing in particular my shiatsu is Zen shiatsu (Brighton Shiatsu College) I was hoping to have ago at my MRSS in the next year or so but i want to have a look also at other styles of shiatsu as in maybe more stretching or TCM based shiatsu. So any ideas of people and places i can go or even any ideas of expanding my knowledge would be helpful. Though i am doing regular massages i have found i have been getting lazy on the theory front since passing my exams a few years ago. So it was more to pick your brain in that direction.

At the risk of getting slapped for hijacking the thread…..
….There are a few people who I would certainly recommend further study with. Mikal Rose for one. Also Graham Crisp or Chris Osborne, my old teachers at the Ki Kai Shiatsu Centre in London. And, damn I can’t think of his name, but one of our guest teachers had some excellent ideas about movement in shiatsu. I’ll get back to you on that when the name comes back to me.
If we get a few minutes I can give you an idea where I’m going with my shiatsu, for whatever that’s worth. I have a fairly dynamic style and emphasise the use of elbow and forearms in order to protect against repetitive strain injury.

Just had confirmation from Julio Cesar Alves who will be instructing and demoing Capoeira at the Meet!
The instructor Julio Cesar Alves, from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, has been teaching capoeira for the past six years in Germany, Holland and now in the UK. He has practicing capoeira for more than ten years and is graduate of Centro Cultural Senzala de Capoeira, one of the most respected capoeira school in Brazil and around the world. Julio built a capoeira school with over 80 students in Ilha Grande (south of Rio) that was regularly visited by tourist and capoeiristas looking for the real capoeira.

That's it, I'm going to ask my instructer if he'd be interested in coming down. He's a 6th dan TKD, 3rd Dan Hapkido and very combat orientated. Someone should be representing the Korean stylists, and I'd be damned if he's not the man to do it. We're nice & local too (Crawley - just up the A23)!

Seriously though, I was just wondering if there'd been any major changes or if it was all the same as the last major post.
Also, and sorry if I seam to be butting in here, I really don't mean to  would it be an idea to general idea of numbers attending so the sports hall doesn't end up packed (granted I have no idea how big these sports halls are, but there seam to be major interest, and I an see it getting a little crowded).

Frankly I'm terrified about the attendence. I have absolutely no idea what to expect! IF its a nice day and I get thousands showing up I would imagine it will spill outside - then I worry about no one showing up! LOL - we just can't forsee these things - I just know we'll enjoy the day :)

The event is still going on :)
This thread was the organising thread and then I chucked it on the above thread to promote.
Frankly I'm terrified about the attendence. I have absolutely no idea what to expect! IF its a nice day and I get thousands showing up I would imagine it will spill outside - then I worry about no one showing up! LOL - we just can't forsee these things - I just know we'll enjoy the day :)
The day is going to be brilliant so please everyone just turn up and show what a load of nutters can really do lol. I'm really looking forward to the day and I'll even join in with some of the MA I've never done lol. AS long as some one gets TeJitsuDo on the floor lol, missed you on wed lol,
see you soon

Prices for me to get there are £80 for flights to Gatwick arriving at 10:15am, and leaving again at 19:35.
Is there likely to be anyone could give me a lift from and to the airport on the day?
£80 is considerably cheaper than £200 a few weeks back, so its looking a little more promising that I might actually be there..... however, I'll probably not can train cos of my shoulder, but we'll see ;)

If no-one's in the gatwick area I could probably swing up there on the way.
My mate flies quite regularly from NI to Southampton - If that's any cheaper you'd be landing almost on my doorstep.

Ah...if you want to take part in the sticks - please bring your sticks! Though some are provided.
Comfortable clothing or Gis,etc. There are some changing facilities available on campus. Whatever you would wear for exercise or training basically. :)
Johnny - you're more than welcome mate!!

Best wishes for your wedding Sonshu. I think you should really start as you mean to carry on though and ditch the reception for a training session :D Someone else can do the speeches!
