Sup fellas, just got a quick question.....Why do most gyms have their punching bags taped up???Is it because they are constantly used and eventually rip or what....Im asking because, i recently bought a bag, and the bottom half is rock hard, and the top half is like a pillow, and i was wondering, im maybe taping it or whatever is how they solve this problem????i don't know....

The reason most gyms have their bags taped up is because of wear and tear. The reason the bottom part of your bag is solid and the top flimsy is because of Mr. Gravity. Try tipping it upside down (if the top is sealed of course, dont want you spilling sand everywhere now do we ;) ).

yea i know that, but there is no way to stop it, other than flipping the bag over? How about water bags, are they any good?

Hi Shantari
I've been there a few times myself but am an old hand at solving these problems now :D
When you first purchase a boxing bag,KB bag...be them canvas, leather, plastic, whatever, they are usually rock hard which you don't really want. Were trying to box here not break our hands or cause nerve damage. You need some give like when hitting a real opponent not a brick wall (pet hate of mine :bang: ..too many gyms/clubs etc have their bags like this rendering them useless, unless you hit like a girl)...anyway here's what I do. You have to do some unpacking/packing. If your bag is filled with sand then completely empty it and replace it with some old clothes. They are easier to handle and work with. If your bag is softening up at the top it looks like you have to do some packing, I presume your bag has an entry point/zip to do this? that should do it. If not then get one. All you need is a bit of tinkering around. Once you pack it yourself precisley to how you want it you'll find that it settles well also. What kind of bag do you have anyway?

its a leather 40lb bag, yes, thats not heavy, but try hitting the bottom full power, its rock hard!!!but yea, i can take a couple minutes of pounding to the bottom before it hurts too much, i dont want to cause any nerve dmg or anything, or be to sore to work the next day, well anywas, i might buy one of those standing bags that you fill the base with water

Slight topic swerve...
I'm currently looking into getting a bag, but what one?
They are ones made of Leather or PU (Plastic) - which is best? I presume that the leather ones are better but only because they are more expensive.

I don't like the free standing bags, they affect your footwork when close in if the base is too big. I hit a water bag once and it didn't feel right...unatural. You won't see many/if any water bags in a boxing gym. just invest in a decent bag that will probably last you for life. I turned my 6ft 80lb KB bag to a 60lb bag.

I much prefer a leather bag; it's a more durable material which will last you a long long time. You can pay out for a PU bag and save a few bucks and see how long the bag lasts; or you can pay the extra and get a leather one which will last you forever.
