Hi everyone,
I've trained in a few styles before settling currently in Choi Kwang Do, but am looking to cross train with ethier Hapkido or BJJ.
Choi Kwang Do suits my needs for the stand up striking elements, but I would like to get to grips with a bit of close range grappling and throws. I know BJJ would be good for the groundfighting part, but am interested in the weapons training of Hapkido.
Does all Hapkido clubs have weapons training? Or just selected Traditional styles? Does anyone know of any clubs around the London/Surrey area?

Hello all,
London has a club that represents Britains oldest Hapkido organization, the Great Britain Hapkido Association, now called International Hapkido - there site is located at: http://www.hapkidoinlondon.co.uk/
Give them a ring, they teach a fully comprehensive curriculum rooted in the original teaching of Choi Dojunim, including weapons.

I train in Jidokwan taekwondo & Moo Hak Kwan Hapkido in Crawley (West Sussex). We're under Grandmaster Sung Soo Lee in Australia, who comes over every 2 yrs or so for seminars, in fact he'll be over in May. Our head instructer is Master Keith Finch who is a 6th degree tkd & 3rd degree hkd, and highly regarded as an instructor & martial artist.
We're probably a bit far out for you for regular training, but I would reccomend Master Rose (not sure what his first name is) who has a school based in Mitcham (S. London/Surrey). He is I believe a 5th dan HKD and president of the British Hapkido Federation. He was guest instructor at our school the other week and gave a highly enjoyable lesson. His style of hapkido is very direct and to the point, and is often pre-emptive in its aproach.
I'll try and get some more details for you and post them here when I get them.
Good luck.

Thank you for you replies, especially yours Downstrike, as Mitcham is more than ideal for me, as thats where I live!
If you could get the details I would be much obliged. Does Master Rose's classes have a weapons syllabus?
Thanks again

Sidey Sid,
Happy to assist.
Master William Rose 6th Dan TKD/4th Dan Hapkido teaches at the Cannons Centre in Mitcham. I'm not sure what days or times, but I know he trains Saturday mornings. I'm sure if you give Cannons a call, they can give you all the info you need.
Hope it goes ok for you, just remember to mention you heard about him through one of Master Finch's students. :D
Good luck.

Damn - knew it seemed too good. :D
I phoned Canons today, they only have Tae Kwon Do and Karate at the lesuire centre. Looks as if Master Rose doesn't hold classes there anymore. Thanks anyway.
Anyone else with suggestions?

It might be worth finding out about the TKD classes because I know Master Rose teaches it too. It may be that the class is advertised as TKD or the staff at Canons don't differentiate between the two. Lets face it, how many non martial artists out there that you know have actually heard of Hapkido? If it is Master Rose teaching the TKD, it'd be worthwhile going down to check it out & having a chat with him about Hapkido.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
Good luck & keep us updated.
Cheers.

As the the seminar.... OW!!!

Hi Sid
I'm a member of Chang's Hapkido Academy in London.
Great club, great people and a fantastic teacher in Tammy Parlour.
But as a member of the academy I would say that so come and check it out yourself. Newcomers always welcome.

Hi Downstroke, was preparing to pop down to Canons today to take a look at Master Rose's class. When I phoned Canons they say they only have TKD class on a Friday night, none today! Do you know what style of Hapkido he teaches BTW?
Oh well, I'll take a trip down next Friday evening and I'll report how it goes...
Also Poorlyknee, had a look at your site, might have a look after work one evening at your class. Does Wol Ge Kwan Hapkido have weapons training?

Hi Sid
Weapons are taught from black belt onwards.
Monday and Thursday nights tend to be the busiest classes if you fancy coming down.
