I currently study Chang Hun style TKD with South West Independent Freestyle Tae Kwon Do (SWIFT) in Exeter, Devon, England and will also hopefully be teaching (with SWIFT) Practical TKD which will have a lot of pressure points, sweeps and takedowns that can be found in the patterns.
To learn more about SWIFT go to http://www.practical-martial-arts.co.uk/swift/home.html

Thankfully I am no longer the only one here that practices WTF forms lol, although the defenses we do are much different (all from the Hapkido classes that are taught seperately as well). I am not suprised to see so few WTF stylists here though, as most of the schools I have trained in were very closed off to exposure with other systems and persons training them. Hopefully that will change, I think we could have some interesting debates on the contrasts and similarities between the two, as well as all the sub systems and lesser known systems that are out there.

I can't really say I'm 'studying' TKD, but my Instructor has a 5th dan in TKD (ITF, I believe) and although the main art is Hapkido, the kicks I'm sure are similar if not identical in some cases, and with some of them, I believe we are learning kicks exclusive to TKD, so I'm 'kind-of' studying TKD :)

This is a bit late, but I did just get here.
I'm in central Iowa and have been involved in TKD since 1984. I started with a WTF organization and trained under (now) Grandmaster Woo Jin Jung.
After a brief sabbatical from structured training, I returned to TKD. I am currently involved with the ATA (American Taekwondo Association) and train Songahm TKD. I am currently ranked as a 2nd dan, and will test for my 3rd dan at the end of February 2003. (Not that belts matter as much as hard work.)

Hello everyone, I currently study at USWESTCOAST TAEKWONDO here in portland.
Although it's WTF affiliated, Olympic style sparring is one day a week (friday) and on weekends(optionally) if you are a competitor, through a special Olympic style training class.
From what I have read about WTF schools in general our classes are far from typical.
I am fortunate to belong to a school that spends a lot of time on practical self defense as well as encouraging students to attend various seminars (hapkido/BJJ/etc,) to round out one's training.
We also are expected to learn ITF forms after attaining black belt ranking.
I have seen WTF cometitors with their hands hanging like useless appendages at their sides so I know exactly where the ridicule comes from.
I have a fair amount of knowledge and experience in several different styles so I can compare this with my current school and I think that the classes teach practical skills.
My current plan is to continue TKD and supplement this with BJJ as I have become fascinated with it's practical effectiveness.

Our schools have expanded our cirriculum via cross-training to also include Jujitsu(Braz. & Small Circle), Arnis/Escrima, Muay Thai and American Kenpo. The TKD portion of our curiculum is still comprehensive to the martial art. Also, some of our students do compete in Olympic(WTF)-style competiton. Being a member of the West Coast Demo Team has given me an oppurtunity to share with and learn from some great martial artists and wonderful people over the years. the integrated sparring is great. no holds barred. when someone is knocked down the oppenet is free to use what ever they know to make the person submit. we do some ho shin sool (tkd grappling) training too, which i really like.

So many different people here. I'm a newbie to the site (wife showed me this morning) and a relative newbie to martial arts - I'll be testing for my 1st dan black belt in April 2004 (I'll test for my recommended black belt next month).
Style? I'm not sure. We practice WTF traditional style, taeguk poomses, but not sure of the style. We don't really discuss that too much.

You could consider ITF TKD to be Chung Hun TKD as it practices the Chang Hun Tul/Hyung. Chang Hun means Blue Cottage and was the pen name of General Choi.

Hi all,
I have been training in Chang Hun TKD for a few years and spent six months training with Luigi Melis of the WTF in Maastricht whilst at uni. I found nothing better to open someone's guard than to fake a punch/backfist to the face before kicking them. Worked all the way through the ranks. Try it. The rules are you can't score with techniques like that and can't hit the head yeah? Doesn't mean you can't throw the techniques out muahahahahaaaaaaa :)

In the UK you had the UKTA. Then they split and the UKTA and the TAGB were present.
Then the TAGB split again into the UTAE and UTAW and finally the GTI. Oh, and now you also have PUMA too.
I'm note sure where the GTF came from however as I started to lose track :)
BUT ... the ITF introduced the Sine Wave. The TAGB, although practicing the Chang Hun Hyung kept the hip twist rather than introducing the Sine Wave. Funny as now that PUMA have broken away from TAGB they have re-joined the ITF and introduced the Sine Wave.
The style of TKD that I practice has also kept the hip twist. Why? I personally find that the sine wave is too hard to learn after nearly 11 years, is too slow, I don't like the way it looks and the maths behind it is wrong accordning to a number of very brainy people I know and respect.
Hope that answers your question.

Hi all
I've been here for maybe three weeks (don't remember) now, but only just saw this post now. I know its wayy old, but I thought I'd get my intro in here too.
I'm a yellow belt WTF TKD and live in Reykjavνk, Iceland.
I started physical training about two and a half years ago and TKD training about a year ago. We have two tests in a year, so a blackbelt in two years, like some of you have been talking about, is beyond me. I have a weird obsession to always be the best at what I do, so I train hard and train alot.
I'm an avid enthusiast about workouts, workout physiology and muscle anatomy and so forth, and have enjoyed countless hours of researching the excercised muscle. Some of you may have noticed I'm most active in "Health and Fitness" where I constantly try to but in any little bit of pointless knowledge I possess in order to make myself look better. (That was only partly true, you may choose the part you believe, HAHAHA :)
My TKD school is wtf as I said, as are all TKD schools in iceland (there are 7, but all small) and the one I'm with is least focused on Olympic sparring. I do however compete in olympic sparring in the -68kg weight class, and about 55% of my training is devoted to that goal. That includes stuff that counts towards other stuff too, like weight lifting and cardio workouts. I practice the basics alot on my own, which probably helps my sparring, but I don't count that in.
So far I've remained flawless on my tests (and have been the only one to do so). My instructors are 3. degree black belt (who got his 3. dan about one and a half months ago) Sverrir Tryggvason and 1. dan (qualified about the same time as other) Joel Kristinn. Originally, my club was founded by Master Michael Jorgensen from norway, but he no longer teaches here, since he is now the national coach for Norway's olympic sparring tkd team.
Thats about all the relevent info I can give you about me, my training and my TKD club. I've really enjoyed my time in the forums, and expect I will in continue to do so.

Hi to all
Generally I only have enough time to have a read at the latest threads posted on the TKD forum, but I thought this time I would help to keep the TKD list going
I have been training in TKD for about 7 years (couple of long breaks in there) and I am currently 1st Kup, I am looking to go for my Black belt grading at the start of next year.
I am a member of the TAGB in Scotland and as long as I have been reviewing the threads, I have not came across anyone else who is part of this association.
Is there anyone out there who is part of the TAGB or part of the Taekwondo International (TKDI)

Do not stalk another member of the Map, even if you think they are in love with you. If needed, ask them if they do love you before following or even harrassing them anonymously.

I originally "checked in" on the "Hey Chazz" thread... and am not sure if I got "counted" with the others... so I'll check in again:
I train in the North Country of New York State (USA) in a small town called Potsdam (with two Universities: SUNY Potsdam and Clarkson). I have been with the master of the Potsdam school since 1994. Originally we were under a Korean grandmaster who has since retired.
The grandmaster's original style is Oh-Do-Kwan and we learn ITF forms and the Taegook forms... both are required for testing. Our ranking is through the WTF (Kukkiwon).
After the grandmaster's retirement, my master went on his own and we have joined the Independent Taekwondo Association (ITA), under the umbrella of GM Pelligrini and the ICHF. We have kept our curriulum the same but have added more time for Hapkido (ICHF) and offer ranking in both. In the ITA, we can get rank certification under ITF or WTF or may choose ITA ranking (much cheaper).
Currently we hold classes at Clarkson University as a club but hope in the near future to set up a new school downtown.
On a personal note, I departed Potsdam as a red belt and lived/trained in Korea for 4 years... testing for the following levels listed below. In a couple weeks, I will be testing for 3rd dan in TKD.

Wow I've been here for awhile and have never really checked into this thread.
I study Kukki/WTF TKD. Have been training for 6 years and just recently tested and passed my second dan.
My training essentially includes the Kukkiwon requirements as well as some Hapkido, Kali, and various other weapons training (mostly based around hapkido)
Right now I'm an apprentice to the master and I'm learning how to teach. I currently teach a beginner class (white belt to green stripe at my school)
Most of my personal training involves self defense and fitness, however right now I'm really into the tournment scene and will probably continue that for the next two years before my body says I quit.
I'm completely intereseted in Korean/TKD history and philosophy so if anyone comes up with something feel free to share or ask.
Peace ya'll

Ok you can add another TKD practicioner to the count. I'm from Houston, TX and study under Grandmaster Kyu Ha Cho, younger brother to Grandmaster Hee Il Cho, and vice president of the Action International Martial Arts Association (www.AIMAA.com).
We have schools that follow ITF and WTF curriculums. We have schools that incorporate Hap Ki Do, Boxing and grappling. AIMAA schools can be found world wide in such countries as Korea, England, Canada, USA, India, Ireland, and the West Indies to name a few. The AIMAA HQ is now located in Hawaii.
Any info I left out about the way we train and what we study can be found @ the AIMAA site, or just hit me up.

I just got my 3rd dan in traditional chung do kwan tae kwon do today, 8/23. I actually train in the same school as kickchick and stumbled upon this forum by accident not even realizing she was a mod. As she said we do the traditional chun ji forms, which has actually gotten students automatically disqualified from tournaments for forms. We actually did the tae guek pattern for a little while as well but that didnt last, the chun ji forms just look sharper to me.

As some of the followers of my doings in the journal will know, I have seen the errant of my ways and decided to do TKD. I wasn't really aware of different TKD styles. Does TAGB mean anything to you? However, I have found a good Taekwondo site(I think) to peruse (http://www.tkdtutor.com)

well, well, well ....
WELL-COME to the TKD Forum Knight!!!
You may want to chat with Holgate and Stewart as they are from TAGB clubs .... (which I believe is ITF (?) )
Yes, TKD Tutor is a good site to check out but...
"Since there are so many Taekwondo organizations (each with numerous instructors who teach Taekwondo in a slightly different manner), the ideas and information presented in Taekwondo Tutor may different from those of your organization or instructor. When the information presented in Taekwondo Tutor differs from that presented by your instructorfollow the information presented by your instructor."

2nd Brown, ITF-style. That's what I train in now, although I also have a 1st dan in Chung Do Kwan which I trained in for about 8 years. The dojang I was in was very traditional and the waiting time between 1st and 2nd dan was almost 4 years since I was a junior when I advanced. The CDK forms we did were not the Chon-ji forms like Kick Chick's, we did traditional Tang Soo Do forms similar to those in Shotokan Karate plus one other series. I trained in a WTF school at my university and unfortunately found it to be very sub-standard so I didn't stick around.

I'm a Brit, been living in Seoul for the past 5 years or so and spending a good bit of my time learning WTF taekwondo; am now 2nd dan. But I'm returning to England soon and can't find a WTF club in my area. So looks like I will have to try something new, and I've been reading with interest all the stuff on the site about ITF vs WTF, and CKD, as there are several ITF clubs and a CKD club where I will be living (North Hertfordshire).

Hello :)
Introducing myself, i am from Canada, been doing wtf tkd since 1989 and it really is a passion for me. I had to stop tkd for a few years for career purpose, although i always trained at home during that time, i restarted this year eith fair intentions to do competitions. I hope we will be able to share a lot togheter, we never end learning and improving, and this forum is (i beleive) a very good place to share our knowledge for a sport that passionate all of us.
Regards,
KickChick

Same as me! :D
I also tore my medial ligament last may which hasn't helped progress. However, I've got a couple of plyometric exercises that have helped my standing jumping height (Scissors are fine) drop me a PM sometime. ;)
