Whats the difference between these two?
I know mitsuo maeda taught jiu jitsu to the gracies thats why the techniques are very similar. But what makes them different?

when helio gracie was taught ju jitsu he was weaker and smaller than his opponents, and found himself on his back in most fights. he was also too small to effectively use throws. so, he developed a system based pretty much entirely on ground fighting and extensive use of the guard position, and less focused on throws, and this is where a lot of todays BJJ comes from. of course there are "styles within styles"- if you learnt from rickson instead of helio you would still be doing ju jitsu but you would be quite a different fighter.
the biggest difference really is in training methods. most bjj schools will not spend a lot of time on throws, instead spending it on groundwork. there are also a few attacks that arent used in judo like leglocks.

I think ikken was talking about (kodokan) judo, not kosen. From what I've heard, kosen judo is judo with an emphasis on ne-waza (so in that respect it's similar to BJJ). However, I've heard they don't use the guard as well as it is used in BJJ and that they can win by pins, making submissions less important.
Btw, Maeda taught a blend of judo and other stuff he picked up in his travels, not 'jiu jitsu'. He may still have called it jiu jitsu, but he was a member of the kodokan.

Is Kodokan judo not the name of a jujutsu style, a very popular one focusing on sport?
