I know everyone has different driving forces for their pursuit of the martial arts, but I wanna know what drives my fellow martial artists out there. What makes you want to get up and train to be the best?

I'm not interested in being the best
I'm out to have fun and be a possitive force in the world.

well, i have 2 reasons for which i train. First i want to feel confident enough to defend myself when i go out. I'm not talking about walking around with your chest out and a half a mille smile. I want to be able to go out without having some guy spoil my night. My other reason is for the recreational part (i couldn't find other way to describe it). It's fun to learn new stuff, and have some to work on and try to improve.

I'm not out to be the best. But I wanna be the best I can be. MA showed me a lot more than "physical" stuff. Mentally, I have better charactor (sp?). I do strive for good technique, but it's much more than that.

I originally started because I wanted to be able to annihlate people if need be.
Now, I guess my primary reasons would be fitness, confidence, self esteem and fun, with being able to annihlate people coming closer to a secondary reason. With the added confidence I gain, I see no reason to hurt people unless absolutely necessary.

I have almost the same reasons as you Bon. Confidence, self-esteem, fitness, strength.
Oh... and I want to be the Best. Best with a capital b. That is 'B'.

For me personally, I see that I have to be fit to be the best! ;)

I personally train because it is now a part of my life! Just like breathing - it is a part of what keeps me on this planet. I really do not make a choice to train anymore - just like I do not make a choice to breathe.

30 rapidly approaching could have something to do with it...
I am going back to training cos bits that didn't flap in the wind do now...enforced rest due to injury is horrible!
I want to get my speed, agility, power and control back. I want to regain my confidence in my appearance and diet and finally not squeeze into the outfits I only bought last year.
I also want to take part in events/classes and meet more members and take an active interest in a social life. All work no play and all that....
There are many reasons why I am now motivated, heres hoping I can get through the remainder of the year without another injury!!

Hmm....joined just for some fun, later found that most seniors were too lazy burpys ;) so I turned out to be one of the better ones, but then this new kid came about a month ago, he's got a DAMN good willpower, and excels in almost everything!
Yeah call me jealous, but rite now my main aim is to become better than that guy, puts my 2 years of training to shame :(

training should not be about trying to become better than someonelse. putting pressure like that makes you lose focus of your true goals and abilities. The only person to compete against should be yourself.

Exactly - and I measure my growth by how I perform under pressure with others.
hahaha, how true this is! I've experienced it, but it's a completely different thing again when you watch people who claim to want to be 'the best' and compete against everyone else. It's a downward spiral of destorying self-confidence and belief in yourself.

When I started I remember it felt like I would never get anything right and everyone expected me to quit because I was a fairly girly 17 yr old in a club where there aren't many girls (the only other in my class left a few weeks after I joined to have a baby) so a big part of me wanted to prove a point to myself and everyone else that I could do it.
After I passed my first grading the last couple of years have been more about challenging myself and having fun. I've also found doing JKD has been a big confidence booster as I'm quite quiet- when I was in Malawi volunteer teaching I ran some self defence classes for the girls at my school which is something I wouldn't have had the guts to do not so long ago. And it's a good laff!

I train to be fit to fight, make new friends and generally just enjoy myself. I've been a bit lazy of late:o and need to get back into the stride of regular training again.

i want to be someone. At the moment in my identity, i am like, just another face. But it's not about what other people think of me, it's about what i think of myself. I'm not planning on telling anybody about what i'm doing, but all i care about is the fact that i'm trying my upmost best at what i'm doing. That makes me feel a lot, lot better.

I started learning in order to learn to kick ass should the need arise (as it occasionally did back there). As time went by, it became something I did for fun and to improve my usefulness to the world...

 So Labatt, after you are the best, what more is there to gain? And what have you gained besides a title? I guess it depends on your defenition of best. What one person may see as the best another person may not.

Defining being the "best" requires discussion so deep i'm not even going to fathom delving into its murky depths
