Hey guys, I constantly read so many articles of different routines. Some want to build and get huge, but think, when your so big, what good are those muscles going to do if your too slow to react. then others wanna focus solely on technique and leave fitness out. This too is terrible, for fitness enhances your already perfected technique. Here is my routine. I'm not asking you to just stop your routines, but just try it for two weeks, I bet you will see your techniques becoming faster, more powerful and your body looking and feeling great.
Monday: I begin with a warm up on the treadmill. I myself warm up with 5 miles, but thats up to you. I purchased ankle and wrist weights to get a full body workout as I run. After the treadmill, I jump rope for about 5 minutes. Then, I bench press, doing three sets of 10. After the bench press, work the shoulders, then do shrugs. Same amount of sets and reps as the bench press. Then I end the weight routine with push ups on chairs, which ecompasses chest and shoulders. After the weight routine , I hit the heavy bag , not stop, using different techniques for about ten minutes. After that I strap the ankle and wrist weights back on and practice form, for as long as I have energy left. This should tire you out really well, but make you a better martial artist in the long run. This is just my mondays. If anyone wants the rest of the week, let me know. thanks for reading.

Well, seeing as you brought it up, of course we need the rest of the week. You're missing out a lot of bodyparts just by giving us the Monday routine! ;)

if u work like bodybuilder then u'll get results like body builder, simple enuff... if u want to build a MA body then u need to follow MA plan :p
i used to put one hour of intense training before hitting the gym, didn't felt like i slowed down or anything like that,.. because to my body it works that way...

very true, my friend. Mind controls all in the martial rts. In fact I feel that your body actions simply follow what has been already done in your mind. What I am saying is that, for example, when you punch and you twist your entire body into that punch you want to be able to focus the strength you have aquired from weight training into that punch. what do you think?

- it's a strange one that. Lots of people have "heard" that one too. But nobody can give a name or date or time. It seems everyone had heard it but nobody actually witnesses it or knows the person concerened directly.

i used to do a similar routine of treadmill, weights, and then MA work.
I've spent almost 8 months without weights though, I realized I'm a martial artist first, and a jock second. If I lose wieght through training then it's just a bonus.
Every time I workout it's something to help me perfect my martial skill.
I've slimmed down a little but actually I'm more cut now than before and you guys are right. It's all about the mind, let the mind work with the total relaxation of the body. You'll get some real power and it sure doesn't come from wieghtlifting.
Not that you can't get strength from wieght training, but Tai Chi continues to improve my shape and strength but I'm using the whole body as a unit instead of one isolated group.

but I'm using the whole body as a unit instead of one isolated group.
That's what I aim to do with my weight training :D

No it bloody isn't!
If you genuinely believe that, try doing some actual work, like jacking logs or building drystone walls and I promise you you will see the error of your ways.

The mind does lead the muscles without the mind you couldnt do anything you would be a cabbage. Of course you must work towards achieving speed, power by means of muscle memory but the mind always leads the action.

Yeah, no offence to anyone here but come on, we are not all Bruce Lee's. And to be honest, i don't have TIME for a great workout. I am a student, i have lots of revision and work to do. I have a Job on saturdays, and i also have a family to tend to, and my social life. I'm not putting these in any order (Well obviously Family first etc.) but we need something practical to do.
It could be true, that person could have lifted a car with a loved one in danger. But, could you do that every time you fight, spar or train? I mean you would have to be emotionally CHARGED, and if you could pull it off every taining session, i recommend you see an anger managment specialist or something. It's both mind and body that get us where we are. Stop being so philishopical and think rationally. If you want to think like that, go train with the Shao Lin or somethink, because im guessing it takes a lot more than a workout a few times a week to be able to back up your claims (mind is power, muscles are power etc.)

Training can of course improve the mental aspect of your technique, in fact that is the focus of most karate practice. But to think that just because you can think something you can do it is complete rubbish. Your muscles are nothing without the mind, but in this universe, objects only move because they are acted on by external forces greater than their own inertia.:D

If you contract a muscle to 100% of the ability of your body, total contraction, you would rip it right off the bone! Thus what the others are saying is partially true, you have to know how to use your mind to use your muscles. If you train with weights you will get stronger but you will always have some strength that you can't tap into because your brain isn't letting you, it doesn't want to rip you apart...
As for the lifting a car thing, ignore it, it is an urban legend!
Assasin: You do have enough time to do a great workout... you may not think that you do but you do. I used to think I didn't have enough time to do anything new but then I took up magic(performing) and then I didn't think I had any time but then I was still able to take up martial arts and then I thought I didn't have any free time but yet I was still able to start lifting weights twice a week and doing some more cardio.
You may have to make some small lifestyle changes and rethink your daily schedule a lot but you can find the time if you really want to...

Actually it's your Muscle Spindles & Golgi Tendon Organs that prevent damage due to over use in either speed of contraction or load.

But as I say, the strength has actually to be there. Besides, there is obviously a perfect way to use your strength in any given action e.g. a punch, but it is much much stronger if you actually bother to work out.

Exactly - and there'a a world of difference between "using strength" & "relying on strength."

Don't tell a woman - you'll be wrong by default. Men are ALWAYS wrong :p
