Sup guys,
I just had a little ametuer boxing match in my friends backyard. Lol, i wrapped my hands with the usual hand wraps+ribbons(1/2 a handwrap), we went full contact and we wore head gear. We used lemon slices as mouth guards since we had none. The gloves we used weren't even sparring gloves, they were like, 8 oz. bag gloves with just a piece of leather for the thumbs, so there was no thumb protection. Before this all started i said some one was going to mess up their thumb. Then my match came up. It was against some guy who's challenged me. I didn't like him very much for he's one of those "hard core" guys. Starting the match, i hit him with a straight jab to the nose. He stepped back and took off his gear saying he wasn't ready, Well anyways, the match ended in me knocking him out with right hook directly to his head. Right after, my thumb started killing me. Its really swollen right now. Do you guys have any tips on what i should do to it? For how long should i ice it, can i still do push ups without aggrivating it?

I have one tip.
Don't be stupid. Backyard boxing is a very foolish thing to do, especially without PROPER equipment.
If you wanna box, join a gym.

Sounds like a real foolish thing to do if you ask me. Due to some foolsih act like what you have just described, some kid accidentally dies, then all hell gets raised about a legit sport which i love receiving bad media attention because of a group of teens who were not thinking, nor acting irresponsibly.
If you want to learn to box, head to a gym. At least it's constructive learning!
As for the thumb, go to the doctors is the best bet. If it's swelling bad then you could have possibly broken it...

60 sec, 3 rounds, soft mat, i don't see how some one could die

ok, lemme rephrase, i didn't knock him out, i hit him, he fell, it took him 13 seconds to get up

Stupid.....say it with me.....stupid.
The fact that you are in a gym with access to boxing equipment, sparring etc. makes it that much more stupid.

Sounds broken, which frankly is less than you deserve for being so moronic

oops, sorry bout the word. Yes moronic yes i will admit it. but a little backyard boxing want kill anybody. Hurt yes, and thats a part of it. Yeah we should of had used better gloves, and gotten proper gear. But atleast we used something. I've heard stories about ppl boxing with nothing at all, atleast we didnn't so that. Sheesh, u guys really make me feel like sh, oops almost did it again, u guys make me feel like pooh. But doing "moronic" things as a teenager, i think is a part of every bodies path to Adulthood, although some might not do something so ideotic. I hope to keep what dignity i have left. Sorry bout that guys

I am sure that those idiots who kicked their "friend" in the chest while he wore a tkd chest protector didn't think anyone would be hurt either. i personally don't care whether you and your moronic friends hurt each other, what I care about is the big "KID BEATEN TO DEATH- BOXING TO BLAME" headline. accidents happen, the human body is very resilient but can also be very fragile. of course, because you are at that age where you are ten foot tall and bullet proof, none of this matters until one of you gets badly hurt or worse.
grow up.

I’m not going to tell you to not do it because I have done worse. The thing is you need to follow some general rules for safety. 1 all normal boxing rules apply. 2 proper sparing equipment is used: this being good headgear, no smaller then 16 oz. gloves, a proper mouth peace (gumshoe?) is a must and some type of foul protection is required. 3 the most important thing someone responsible to act as a ref. You have a mat which is good. Also it very important no one is pushed into the sparing. One more thing if someone takes a shot hard enough to prevent them from being totally clear headed at a count of 10 the sparing is over for them. When in doubt error on the side of safety. All this being said you are best sparing will be in a gym under the supervision of a coach.

a couple of things for you to do:
1) get it checked.
2) follow the doctor's orders.
3) use proper equipment.
4) think: "will this really help me? or will it hamper me?"
we used to have ug fights too. but we kept fighters safety a number one priority. we always used the proper equipment for the type of fights we fought.

yeah i wouldnt have a problem with that. after all, you can't always be in a gym, you might have a friend from another style round and want to have a go. but it sounds to me like you did none of the above things.

well, w had proper head gear, we went wrong with the gloves and mouth pieces, luckily no one was seriously hurt, and i will consider having the proper equipment the next time we box ( unless he don't want his rear handed to him again)J/K no flame!!!!

"Body Shots", as it's called here, is one of the dumbest things ever. Two kids punching eachother in the ribs and kidneys, brilliant!

Bruce Lee did it? Well, that makes it a great idea. It's ALWAYS better to spar/fight in a school because you can go as intense as you want and it's still somewhat safe.

Backyard boxing is largely for those that don't have the balls to go to a proper boxing gym and do it the right way. It's much easier to just pump up your ego by acting tough with a few pals

wow, the last post on this thread was 2 months ago till today, and i don't care what you guys think, we spar at "proper gyms" and all that stuff, so stop trippin',. maybe the first couple times we didn't but we do it right now, and we sometimes have grudge matches, against ppl who aren't "pals"
