In grappling, is it better to be short and powerfully built or is another build better suited, I've heard different stories about the merits of both..
Thanks in advance

better to be short and powerful in judo because you can get under your opponents center of gravity much easier. gross generalisation of course, but mostly applicable. for rolling about on the ground theres advantages and disadvantages to both kind of build and it depends more on the person.

Thank you, and double thanks for the quick response. :) And would this apply to any grappling art, and is it just in sport or in self defence too? and is 5 foot 6, able to bench about 250lb (give or take)at age 17, counted as that short and powerful build described?

each built has advantages/disadvantages. So learn to make the most of what you have

I would say short and heavy , the higher you bench the better for you but I think your weight is more/equally important in judo.
