As a result of finger and knuckle pushups, punching trees and general self-mutilation I now have hands that are hard and calloused but also about as flexible and agile as rusty iron. If anybody could suggest anything that would loosen up the joints I would be very grateful.

A time machine so you could go back and not be so dumb this time :D
Ahem....
I'd recommend a good joint fuel supplement - Glucosamine Sulphate - 1.5g per day. It takes a month or two to get into your system but the results are impressive.
Didn't you do Kyokushinkai? I have the same problem with my hands myself :(
Yoda's right, Glucosamine Sulphate is good stuff. It worked for me, it loosened up my knees too :D

Oh please enlighten me, where might I get this miracle drug to cure all ails? Is it normal pharmacy stuff?
The busted hands are a problem for other people I know too, If this stuff works, they'll regard me as the messiah come to save them.
My knuckles ARE pretty hard though. Maybe I should try hitting them with a hammer like Sosai did...
By the way, is the callousing for life or will it disappear after a while?

What would hitting them with an hammer do!? Are you serious :D
How many trees have you hit, on the few occasions I've hit hard objects hard I knew the damage it had done straight away :(

No, I'm not serious, Thought Kyokushin_girl would understand the reference to Sosai.
As for the trees, I have the idea that the more abuse you inflict on yourself the more you harden, so I guess I used trees as punching bags on about two dozen occasions (oak, mostly) Broke my knuckles once or twice (I guess) but now have very hard, if ugly and deformed, knuckles. The problem with hitting trees now lies in the wrist.

Hey Sarah,
can you pick that up in Boots? sounds like I could use some. I'm having a problem with stiff knees recently, I think its cause I've up'ed my squat weight.
Cheers

Hell no, they wouldn't dare! I scared the hell out of 'em! That's one type of arborean plant that won't mess with me no more!
Remember: If you feel you don't get sufficient respect from your trees: Pummel the hell outta them! That'll show 'em who's boss!
At this point I should probably reassure people that I don't have anything personal against trees.
I only punch trees occasionally now, and not for very long periods of time.
Try a mariwaka instead of trees. It's a good way of hand toughening, without having Greenpeace on your back :D
If you don't mind me asking, why do you want tough hands?Unless you're fighting a lot of knockdown, I don't really see the need.

Well, I guess I just don't know when to stop and take too strong leaps in my training "Can I make 5 pushups?" OK! Can I make 10 pushups? Yeah! Can I put my hand through this concrete wall like Mas Oyama? *CRACK* Guess not! YOW"
I'm sort of unaware of what level of hand toughness you need to achieve, because I've on occasion hurt my knuckles by fighting those stomach-as-rock Kyokushinkaikan so I worked on toughening mine, sometimes on trees. It worked very well too, I just have arthiritis in my fingerjoints.
But back to my question from before the wellfare of trees became the main subject: Where can I get some of this Glucosamine Sulphate, if not from YODA? Can you get it at a pharmacy?
Need to stop writing now, Greenpeacers are coming up my driveway armed with meat cleavers and unpleasant looks on their faces.

Ok - I suppose I can give them a plug this once - they are a very good company...

just look in any store that looks like it sells old people drugs :D btw, does anyone know if cracking your knuckles can actually cause arthritis? I believe it's just releasing air from the joints?!?

To reinforce this, Dave and K Girl turned me onto Glucosamine when I did my ankle in. I wouldn't be without it now. Cod liver oil has some similar benefits, but I suppose it depends how bad the problem is.

I'm a bit of an expert in knuckle cracking, being able to play Oh Susana on cracknuckle without loosing a beat, and I can say that cracking knuckles has worsened an already unpleasant finger problem.
