Hello, I am new to this site, but not to the martial arts. Do any of you practice Tae Kyon(not kwon do)? I am a senior Brown Belt in tae kyon, and am wondering about the black belt forms, does anybody know about the tae kyon kata? Ato tsukihi

A basic intro. I suggest you visit a school and see for yourself...it's quite nice, I practice it sometimes.

Is an old style of korean martial art, mainly kicking. Taekwondo is orginated from it.

Would Taekkyon movements look more like they came from a Chinese source. Taekwondo movement appear to be more karate based from Japan.

That's hard to explain, I'd say more like Karate than Gung-fu. Also, it has a kinda swaying "dance" (soooooomewhat like Capoeira). It also has some tumbles and throws...at least, where I've gone.

I'll see if I can tape a master doing some movements and put it up on my web-site you you all to download.

What association are you with? And what about you Dae-Han Ssi? KTA or TSA? The TSA is the association under Do Gi Hyeon, and Taekkyon originally had no formal rank structure and no forms as we typically understand them.

Yi Yong-Bok spent some time with Sung Duk-Ki (5 weeks to 6 months depending on who you talk to) and then went out and started the KTA, promoted himself to 9th Dan and invented forms. He also changed the basic footwork, inverting the triangle.

The only "old forms" in Taekkyon are the Yaet-Beob, which are really just a vastly less restrictive ruleset for the game of Taekkyon.

I just want to point out, it is NOT Tae Kyon. It is Taek Kyon. And a proper romanization is together as one word, Taekkyon.

I think Tae Kyon also has Shotokan Karate roots just like Tae Kwon Do but I don't really know for shure but it Tae Kyon did origant TKD but Tae Kyon seems to be like a Korean Kung Fu type of art.

You think? Not likely.

Tae Kyon is native to Korea while Tae Kwon Do is developed much later as a result of the combination of Tae Kyon and Shotokan Karate.

who, a year ago you were a senior brown belt, now (one year later) a 4th degree black belt... smells like McDojo man... isn't there supposed to be a waiting period (1y for 2nd degree black belt, 2y for 3rd degree black belt, 3y for 4th degree black belt)... so what normally takes 6y you did in 1?
please clear up - this is NOT an insult, just curious... ;)

Amen Evilkingston.

I've been a 3rd degree black belt for 2 years now and am anxiously awaiting my 4rth dan testing tenatively scheduled for a year from now, if my master even thinks I'm ready, hell, if I think I'm ready ( I think I might wait and train for an extra year). the master title is a sacred position, that, as it has been explained to me, is not customarily obtained until age 22. Not that I don't believe ya there Hwarangwarrior, I'm with Evilkingston

taekkyon sparring is kinda weird, your allowed to throw and take down but punches seem to be illegal,i was watching a tourney in korea and there doing matrix and capoera moves but it was all real and alot of them were actually connecting there blows, i dont really know whats goin on but its really cool to watch
go look for vids online

I was testing for my black a year ago, and my sensei had been teaching me the advanced kata's, and was allowed to test for my 2nd and 3rd at the same time, it was just a really hard test. At one point we did have the waiting period requirements, unless the student displayed capability to test early. And I only just recieved my 4th degreee, sorry if its unorthodox. Im not going to be testing for a LONG time, just so I can absorb all the information and training that I need to be the rank that I am. So sorry for the confusion, it confused me to when my sensei explaned it.
Oh, and we're allowed to use punches...dont know why we wouldnt be.

My sensei's sensei was a taek kyon master from Korea, thats the only reason that I am able to study this art. And it's not the same as kwan bup, not near the same. The closest martial art to taek kyon are the Wa-ryu's: Ishnwaryu and Ketsuwaryu.
