I came across this interesting "report" from the Journal of The American Society of Exercise Physiologists.
The purpose of this study was to determine the energy cost and cardiovascular responses to a typical sequence of martial arts training.
Seems just until recently research in martial arts training and energy expenditure has focused primarily on the energy cost of performing kata repeatedly ... oh my, ("a pre-arranged sequence of movements called Kata (Japanese) or Poomse (Korean) are used to train the practitioner for balance, coordination, weight transfer and focus").... but now research has been focused on training activities beyond katas....(calisthenics, kick/punch techniques & sparring)
The report may be a bit "technical" for some ... but still interesting.
It does conclude that ma training burns alot of calories (due to its interval training nature), and so is an effective calorie expending exercise.
It also stated that the average expenditure for martial arts activity was equivalent to bicycling at 10-11.9 mi/hr.

I went to fitday.com and it gave about 700 calories for an hour of martial arts training. That quite alot, IMO.

Good point, actually. If you're trying to bulk up, it's going to be difficult while doing MA. High-intensity aerobic exercise slows muscle hypertrophy more than it burns fat.

martial art trainining is more interval training than constant "aerobic" training....

Need to gain weight? .... take in more calories than you expend!
(I hate you!)

Oh, heh, my bodyfat percentage is plenty high enough, no worries there. But although my legs are fairly muscular, I'm a stick figure from the waist up (lucky it starts that high, eh? :D) And need to add some muscle, then do all I can to burn off fat while keeping as much LBM as I can.

((((Applause))))

Amen to THAT

I have about 28lbs to loose to get myself back to my best. I reckon it'll take me 10 weeks.

This is good to hear. I just got back into MA this month after a 7 year hiatus. I could stand to lose 15-20lbs.

Wow!!

That's quite a workout! It turns the body into a lean, mean, fightin' machine;)

Labatt- I can relate to you wanting to bulk up, I just want to be more toned, and TKD just keeps me on the slight side. My girl friends hate me for not being able to relate to their dieting and wanting to lose pounds...
