Sorry, I would have to disagree. My opinion of Blitz is not very high; it relies on too much hype. The now defunct Australasian Fighting Arts was much better magazine without the Bull that seems to be in Blitz. Admittedly Blitz seems to have won the commercial war; but then commerciality is no gauge on quality, just marketing skills.

Admittedly I haven't read it for many years, but I do look at in the newsagents from time to time. There still seems a lack of depth to the stories, and they always focus on the commercial arts. I guess because they spend up big in the advertising section.
My opinion is only my opinion, and is based on my experiences. I have been around martial arts for a while, and have practiced Shorinji Kempo for the last 16 years. This experience could shape my idea of what makes good stories differently than someone newer to budo. This is not meant as a put down, and if the magazine meets your expectations and quality then it is a good magazine for you. In fact, it would be a dead boring world if we all liked the same things.

I just bought and read the MA mag Blitz. Well not bad i guess, there are some intesting article that i can see, like who's who in MA world (though for Blitz australian). Because i'm a shorinji kempo (SK) kenshi, which i consider a quite complete MA, i'm only interrested in seeing the grappling technique of BJJ in there. As a stand up TMA practitioner, i sure want to have a better defence technique if i met with jiujitsu fighter by understanding their nature.
when i was in oz, i picked up a couple of copies, i thought it was quite good.
some good stuff in there

Blitz is disgusting.
It's a bunch of school owners, basically patting themselves on the back for being so sweet. They are commercially tied up with NAS, so even despite NAS slowling becoming the most farcical piece of junk tourney in the land, they still plug it like never before.
Each months edition seems to dedicat at least one page to talking about how sweet one of the staff is. and I've heard soem pretty wild stories about how much it will cost you to get your school or style "interviewed".
Furthermore, Silvio Morelli seems to be very tight with Aussie Bob from GKR - reason enough in itself to be a little suss....

Almost agree with you. Looks very much like you need to be very close to Silvio or spend up big time to get your name in lights. The mag focuses too much on Karate & Tkd (although this may be their main fan base).
I have been guilty of buying the magazine on probably too frequent a basis. The main reason being the lack of quality MA publications out there. They do occasionally have some really insightful articles, but I did have to laugh at the interview of GKR's own Aussie Bob which was spread over three issues. Now I wonder how much he paid for that one? Hmmmmmmmm...

Bujutsu is a little better. They have had some good stories like the one on Mizumoto sensei, the Shorinji Kempo Gold Coast Branch Master a couple of issues back. It still seems to be a bit of a club though and has too many stories on competition for my tastes.
whats ma mags do you rate down under

Sadly I don’t think there is one that I would call good. I buy Bujutsu every so often as they do have some good articles, but most of it is similar to Blitz. I spoke to their editor a couple of years ago when they were just starting out. He called me to see if I would agree to an interview, I don’t know why as there are many more experienced kenshi in Australia that could offer a better interview and suggested he contact Mizumoto sensei. At the time he gave me a run down on what type of magazine he wanted to produce and it sounded good. I think the commercial needs and small customer base in Australia have meant he needed to make some compromises.
Personally I would like to read more stories on different arts histories, how they perceive themselves to be different from other arts, what characteristics they believe make up their art, their techniques and their explanations of the theory of application, and their visions for their future. I would also like to see more sports science type articles, not just your basic fitness stories. I think that the amount of commerciality involved in martial arts today may support some stories on business principles and business law.

i know what you mean the biggest one over here is martial arts illustrated and they do whatever is hot that month and its mostly asking same questions to everyone more than asking about their art. tho its only compklaint as they have a large section of really good articles

Does this magazine have anything to do with blitz martial arts equipment? If so then my opinion would be the same as most people on this thread- CRAP. Most useless, rude, useless company I have ever dealt with. Not to mention the equipment they sell is complete tat.
Rant over :D
