Does it strike anyone else that these are all wrong.

Surely a light Sabre has no weight in the blade, so the last thing you would do would be to swing it with both hands?

Too much time on your hands... too much time...

Maybe they were channeling more Force into the handle?

Jack

I just talked to a friend about this seriously.

He thinks it is doubtlessly because it is not about weight, but about being able to keep the handle in hand without it being knocked out of your hand by an opponent, who may have both hands on the handle.

I've thought about this before (sad I know), and thats what I come up with as well.

The things suposed to move through anything (except other lightsabres) like its not there.

This make Darth Mauls 'Double lightsabre Cartwheel of Death' pointless. As when he touched the lightsabre to the ground it would just keep going and he'd fall on his head!

If the lightsaber is supposed to cut through anything how come in one of the duels between Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker (cant remember if it is ESB or ROTJ) but Luke hits Darth in the shoulder with the lightsaber but it doesn't cut right through?????

I think it's down to the individual skills of the sabre user, i mean one might be able to peel an orange with it if one is skillful enough.

James Bond would be able to cut the straps on a dress and then stroke the wearers bottom playfully with his wouldn't he now!;)

Ah, but Vader was never trying to kill Luke, only turn him to the Dark Side!

Something puzzles me a bit about light sabers. If they're made of laser or light, why don't they keep on going like a flashlight?

As far as techniques are concerned, you'd have to use it like a gim, not a dan do. ;)

Look just because you don`t have one doesn`t mean they`re not real.

I actually used to spend all my time in a SW-RP oriented chat room around '95-'96, and came up with a theory on lightsaber operation for a friend. I figured it probably held compressed gasses of different types, accounting for the different colors, and released them into something like the theta pinch or Z pinch we use for controlled fusion reactions, just with a much stronger and better controlled magnetic field.

Yes, I was a geek among geek. Verily, a geek's geek.

Best method for light sabre creation we could come up with in my physics class was to use a half-silvered mirror foil material with a very carefully set refractive index and a high-powered laser generator. The generator then puts a very high-powered beam through a tube of the foil, sealed at the end, and most of the beam reflects back inside, with a little allowed to leak in order to show the 'blade'. On contact with something the foil would deform, allowing larger amounts of energy to leak out, and with a powerful enough generator you'd effectively be cutting through them with an industrial laser. The light pressure on the inside would then force the foil back to its original shape.

The things suposed to move through anything (except other lightsabres) like its not there.

Never found out where this idea came from, as far as I know its never actually mentioned. The light sabers do actually have some solidity, hence why they can block blasts from energy weapons, and why they can't simply cut straight through a material. They will experience some resistance, because with enough light to do that kind of damage to someone, you've then got a fairly high pressure generated by the light, so its almost semi-solid.

The bit I don't understand is the wild flailing motions.

You have something made of energy that will pass through a person like a hot knife through butter. Why then the big movements that you would use with a big blunt weapon.

Also they are effectively weightless. While the jedi attacking me winds up for a big spekky kill I bring my saber forward, touch his throat then block the strike.
Poor imagination skills from all involved in the writing.

They don't keep going on forever because they device can control the length. The longer the blade the thinner, less powerful and less dense (struck with a short dense sabre may produce some interesting effects).

im gonna dive right in here and talk about the weapons usage.. i looked at that sabre site and on the stances page. it seems to me that these 'geeks' have done their home work.. to a point. they only talk about japanese arts. the light sabre would be a multi sided weapon, and the japanese were less than partial to these as far as im aware. so in this way it certainly doesn't resemble the weapons they talk about. also what they say about the difference between the masters and the pedewans is good but using screenshots of the actors stances is bs cos they haven't actually been training all there life..

any way i am never gonna go there again cos its a side of me i left in my friends loft the last time i played dungeons and dragons (2nd edition)

hey heres a point for discussion.. do geeks make better martial artists, and why?

No they cannot cut through anything. There is a type of material that is immune to it and is found on Yavin IV. It was used to block an entrance to a secret place if I remember.

I don't know what its called or where else its found. However it cuts through plasteel with ease and EVERYTHING is made out of plasteel in Star Wars.

Darth Vader's hit did not go through Luke because Luke would be no good dead. The purpose of the fight was not kill but to drive Luke insane with anger. To have Luke lash at Vader with his pain and anger therefore turn him to to the dark side.

i am dead serious here. (I used to read the books like crazy)

Actually I think in those times the kind of special effects were pulled off were enearthly and unique, it was considered to be one of the better space fiction kinda movies....at least that's what my elder cousin tells me, he's a die hard fan of the series

Actually the reason I got the nickname YODA has nothing to do with Star Wars at all. It's just a coincidence that I happen to be a fan. If anything I prefer LOTR to Star Wars.

Indeed - and judging from the fact that the Imperial Guards armour was made using it - it seems possible that Vader's armour could have had it too.

Is there some significance in the colour of the sabre?

Is it to do with the good/evil thingy of the weilder?

Good guys had blue, aber, green.

Bad guys had red.

Samuel L wanted a purple one but Lucas said no, cause that was a bad guy colour, then changed his mind without telling Sam to give him a suprise when he watched the film!

Cortosis is impervious to Sabre Blades, but the regular imperial troops armour is not made from it...only some of the elite troops, like the shadow troopers.

got to get back to JKII.......vvrrrummmmm
