You need to have an "other" selection. I picked Iggy Pop but my favorite band would have to be X

Classic punk, The Ramones. Not a lot of the new 'everyone sounds the same' punk of today. :D

WTF?!?!?
What kind of list is that?!?!?
Here's some no list should be without:
Bad Brains (Banned in DC is a great album to start with)
Circle Jerks
Firehose
Sub Humans
JFA
Wasted Youth
Minor Threat
FEAR
The Vandals
Half Off
No For An Answer
Judge
Uniform Choice
7 Seconds
.... there are hundreds more.
Though the line between 'punk' and so. cal hardcore starts to blur a bit.

i think some people are mixing up *hardcore* bands and *punk* bands.
minor threat, black flag, and those kinds of bands are great, but they are a hardcore bands.
imho the difference is punk bands are a lot more about looking stylish than making music, hardcore bands are the opposite.

I think there is very undefined line between a lot of 'punk' and 'hard core'.
Sub Humans, Crass and others like them were definitely a form of social commentary. Most definately the Dead Kenedy's were. Jello Biafra kept it up long after the DK's were off the scene.
The Dickies, Cirle Jerks, Agent Orange, The Germs, The Stooges are great bands and would be considered punk.
Granted bands like Minor Threat, Black Flag, Fugazi etc... came on the scene much later than did a lot of the punk bands from the UK. The time/social/culture setting they came from was also vastly different.
Shonen Knife and Lip cream are two good Japanese punk bands. But again even later on the scene.
