after reading thru a couple forums and searching sites on google, i realize that i'm a lil more confused than when i started. does jun fan normally train in any weapons usage? if so, what are they? and if no, why not? would that not have been an important aspect to bruce lee's philosophy? or was his jkd more concerned with disarming an attacker, as opposed to using arms on an attacker?

Some of the elements in Jun Fan were derived from weapon work (ala western fencing). But I don't think Bruce ever incorporated weapon usage into his curriculums (though I could be wrong).

A lot of JKD schools do teach weapon work, often from Filipino martial arts. But it varies from instructor to instructor.

Also the important thing to remember is that Jun Fan is not the same as JKD.

As far as I know Jun Fan Gung Fu does not contain a weapons element (but then I might not have been exposed to it yet). As JFGF was based in BL's own experience in Wing Chun with elements from other arts such as boxing, fencing and other Kung-Fu styles it may be that the weapons side of Wing Chun was missed out becasue BL had not progressed that far in his own WC training (just a theory - I don't know for a fact). Or perhaps he thought this element of WC outmoded (i.e. the butterfly knives and dragon pole weren't of much use in creating a general approach to weapons training? (Again just a theory).

The school I attend takes a very much JKD concepts approach (as opposed to JKD nucleus). Jun Fan makes up one element of the curriculum taught. The weapons side of things is covered by what we call Kali (other names in other places - FMA / Filipino Martial Arts).

As for BL's philosophy in regards to defence or attack with a weapon. I think he was primarily concerned with utilising what you had available in the most pragmatic manner possible. If you have weapons then sure you use them. If not then you make use of your natural weapons. The emphasis is is on directness and efficiency whether with a weapon or not.

I'm well prepared to be corrected on this but this is how i understand it

Jun Fan was Bruce Lee's birth name and means "born again". In JKD terms it refers to all the kick boxing / empty hand aspects and contains no weaponary. For weapons a lot of JKD schools use philipino arts due to Dan Inosanto's influence on Bruce Lee, but you can use anything that works for you:D
