OK,
as you may, or may not know, this web site is hosted in Scotland!

I was wondering what opinion Non-Scottish people had of Scotland, it's people, history and customs.

Have you ever been to Scotland?

Do you have relatives there?

Do you want to visit Scotland?

Do you know where Scotland is?

* Please don't let this thread degenerate into Haggis jokes and Sheep pestering stories!

P.S. Mel Gibson is NOT Scottish ok!

Scotland, what I think (by Jim);

It's at the top part of England
It's mountainous
It rains
It rains a lot
It's got a lot of grassy paddocks
The people there talk a totally different language that they think is English
The people there can probably drink the rest of the planet under the table in a single sitting
The women are opinionated
The men are opinionated
The people have quick tempers, will probably head-butt you in a fight but will probably help you up afterwards and let you buy the next round
Oh, yeah - and it rains (a lot)

Nope, don't have any rellies there (that I know of) and yes I'd like to visit there anytime soon, please.

Andy, scotsmen......fellow celts - i have never been to Scotland(though i have met many Scottish people) but i imagine it to be very much like "the land of my fathers", WALES!

Beautiful green valleys that on a sunny morn one could not wish for more delight and between the glens great cosmopolitan cities and towns inhabited by people that are wonderfully poetic, kind and hospitipal. Running through this is a rich vain of history that flows directly into the hearts of it's people who maintain this by keeping traditional customs alive, and although at times these seem strange and alien (to outsiders) add to the combination of qualities that go to make up such a great, proud and noble nation.

If it wasn't for Scotland holding England up , the whole of your country would sink into the sea and never be seen again.

This does not include Wales or Ireland or Northern Ireland...all of who have there lifesavers badges and can swim.

Wow...looking outside its sunny and warm....but it was raining earlier.

Must go now...sons and daughters is on tele.

Is it true that distance you live from the north pole is inversely proportional to your hardness?

Some evidence...

1. The founder of BJJ was a scotsman.

2. The programme "SAS: are you tough enough?" where the scottish sargeant explained why 2/3 of the SAS are scottish: "Because were harrrrrd b@st@ds". HEHEHE

3. The caretaker from the Simpsons.

Hard b@st@ds - not a bad stereotype for scots to live up to. :-)

Oh yes, and its one of my fave places to holiday. Especially the Cairn Gorms.

A lot of Scottish people feel kind of hard done by for a number of reasons;

1: While Scotland may look great on a post card, it's usually cold, wet & miserable.

2: Jobs are scarce, and less well paid than those south of the border.

3: Highland Clearances, the shipping of families to America, so English landlords could steal Arable land.

4: The Massacre of Glencoe, Culloden etc.

5: North Sea Oil.

6: Our water, sold back to us in taxes.

7: Poll Tax, introduced in Scotland two years before the rest of the UK

8: 1st World War, 2nd World War and recent Iraq crisis' Scottish regiments sent into battle first. In fact during the first world war, most of the scottish regiments had been wiped out before conscription was introduced. Makes Scots seem expendable?

9: Paul McCartney singing 'Mull of Kintyre'

10: We got done out of our Scottish Royal family.

11: The English knicked our Coronation stone (till we knicked it back and no one knows where it is now)

12: While made in Scotland, it is the most expensive place to buy Whisky.

13: You can't spend a Scottish £5 note in London, even though it has the damn Queens head on it and clearly say's Sterling!

14: Our football team are really good losers. Too good in fact!

15: Don't mention the Rugby team.

The Scots invented;

1: Whisky.

2: Tarmac.

3: The Telephone.

4: The Television.

5: Penecillin.

6: The deep fried Mar's Bar.

7: Martial Arts Planet!

I'm sure I've missed a few things. :D

": 1st World War, 2nd World War and recent Iraq crisis' Scottish regiments sent into battle first. In fact during the first world war, most of the scottish regiments had been wiped out before conscription was introduced"

The reason for sending the Scots in first is -

Seeing a hairy a*sed red haired giant wearing a skirt with tartan octopus in a head lock, chewing on one of its legs and squeezing it so hard it sqeals from the pain.

Scares the sh*t out of the enemy!

The welsh use close harmony singing to confuse the enemy, we're always sent in along side the scots or next.

all those inventions what a place it makes you proud to be scottish only wish some other people were and backed some of our sporting teams instead of whining about them.

on another note apartently a recent survey showed there are more "geniuses" in Scotland per head of population than anywhere else in the world.

Walking about Glasgow today made that kinda hard to believe

Well there's sport and there's sport WW.

These days you can only take pride in having the odd true scot in a national team, as opposed to people with a vague scottish heritage, drafted in because they qualify and they can't get paid for playing in another nations 'A' squad.

Hard to take National pride in a team comprised of French, New Zealand and South African players just because they have Scottish Grandmothers??? At the same time, do these players care about the end result in the same way as a true patriot would?

This is a whole other thread though, along the lines of 'Amateur vs Professional sport'

In generally I have always really loved Scotland, scenery is beautiful etc. The one thing that always amuses me on my travels though is how all people in Edinburgh prentend to be English. It should really be called 'england of the north' rather than 'athens of the north'.

Glasgow is great, amazing shops and clubs. They should really make that the capital.

Andy Murray

Hi Sammy!

Most people in Edinburgh, are in fact English!

Glasgow has long been the unofficial capital of Scotland.

If it wasn't for that damned castle, and all the tourist economy, Edinburgh would have been destroyed long ago :D

Damn you Andy Murray you West Coast soap dodger!!! ;)

People wonder why the English defeated us so easily. Its because we were to busy fighting each other to notice they'd taken control! :)

Edinburgh is by far more upper class to Glasgow, you only have to count the number of brothels and strip joints to realise that.

Wait a minute, I think I'll move to Glasgow! :D

My mum’s Scottish and she tells me that every good invention was designed by a Scotsman (or is that Scotsperson), also that Scotland is a naturally beautiful country full of warm and friendly (although thrifty) people.

Mums a redhead with the temperament to match, so I dare not dispute anything she has to say on the subject of Scotland or its people, no matter how good of a martial artist I am.

Oh yeh, while my friends were learning to play guitar or drums, I had to learn how to play the bagpipes (great chick pulling invention that one was guys). Could have been worse, I could have been forced to take up Highland dancing like my sisters were.

One day I’ll make the trip over there to practice my long lost art of bagpipe playing on some misty moor.

craigwarren
24-Apr-2003, 02:58 PM
Take it from me playing the bagpipes on some misty moor is OVER RATED. Much niser playing them in a warm hall. Also another good use for being able to play the bagpipes is to show the tourist just how really **** a lot of the buskers are. They hate it when a better player shows up :)
