View Full Version : Facing your Fears

We all have them .... even martial artists! :) There are the good fears and the bad.... and we all have different responses to our fears. Some people get angry, freeze up, sweat, cry or just get overwhelmed with anxiety.
Be it fear of rejection, fear of public speaking, fear of trying something new, fear of heights or even fear of committment ....
what is your fear (s), how do you handle it and have you successfully tackled any of your fears and how?

NLP(Neuoro Linguistic Programming) is the way to...
i don't want to brag but even before knowing anything about NLP my process was almost exact the same, so it was inherent in me somehow...

Heights. And I'm the only one authorized to drive the highlift, so when we have to inspect the tail of an airlane, I get to do it. AHHHHH.. Everyone thinks it's funny that "Zen Master Brad" is afraid of heights.
Tried to get over it by scaling a castle wall while in Turkey. DIdn't work.

I have a few fears .... but my main fear that I have tried to conquer is my fear of heights also Kurohana and cain_charlie.
I tried to get over mine in Costa Rica last year by trying this http://www.1costaricalink.com/eng/tours/tours/htempt-skytrek.htm (sure does look like me in the first pic!!) I did complete the whole trek as there was no turning back .... but I am still afraid!!!

Or losing!
but my main fear that I have tried to conquer is my fear of heights also Kurohana and cain_charlie
Surely you're not afraid of Brad or CC?
I faced my fears a few years ago and almost got arrested. Something to do with walking into a school classroom naked really makes people angry...

Girls are scary, I used to just get drunk so I could talk to them. I knew my current girlfriend for a couple of years before she erm asked me out. :D
Strange how standing in front of a class of students can be less nerve wrecking. And I don't find you can do that effectively after drinking ;)

I guess I fear answering the phone because you don't know who is calling or what they want. I still use the phone but that first couple of seconds is pretty scary.
Fergie, what's your phone number ;)

Sheep!
They watch you with their beady eyes acting all placid, while they are actually thinkng up the best way to disembowel you. Scary monsters!
Genuine fears?
Dissolution of MAP (thru lack of donations)!
Anything bad happening to my little girl, now aged two!
Otherwise, I'm fearless,
except maybe ending up in hospital again, as the food sucks!

The only thing i can think of is sharks. I'm terrified of sharks, it's ridiculous, I live in northern Europe, our largest sharks are the size of of a hotdog, but I'm still terrified that one of the great white sharks might swim from Australia just to get me.
paranoid? who's paranoid?
Sharks? Come surfing with us and I'll re-inforce your fear for you. Saw my brother-in-law followed in on his wave by a shark about 4 years ago - scared all nine colours of poo outta me!

Insects, I hate them! I am ok with ants but bees, flys or anything like that spook me.
Skunks, I almost stepped on one once, saw it at the last moment and avoided getting sprayed. Anything with a white stripe sends shivvers down my spine now.

Addendum to my fear of heights... My WIFE!! I'm totally scared of her losing her temper with me. Especially when she's over my shoulder reading my posts and correcting my spelling or grammar!! Not whipped... but she does scare me.

I'm afraid of a lot of things!
Spiders
Cockroaches
Heights (not just the falling but the landing too! and that's a big reason why I've been so scared about trying breakfalls in my dojo.)
being in front of people (I get REALLY nervous when more than a couple of people are looking at me)
getting lost (my earliest memory is getting lost in the mall)
There are others but those are my main phobias/fears. I saw once on TV that the top 3 phobias that people have are 1. heights 2. creepy, crawly things (like spiders, rats, etc) and 3. speaking in public. I have all 3! :(

I fear what I don't understand, along with rejection and failure...
It's the reason I procrastinate so much - something I need to research into so I can become much more productive.

Since I started this thread I have been trying to rid some of my fears but it always seems there is another that takes it's place.
We've had an exceptionally bad winter this year ... and with some 360 degree go rounds in the car... Fear of driving on ice can be added to my new list!

Wow this site looks totally different now!
I just wanted to update and share that my huge breakfall fear is gone now!!!! I'm so happy!!!! I'm not ready for the high breakfalls yet (I'll work up to that) but I'm not afraid to try the low or medium ones anymore! It's like a big wall of fear has been removed and I feel free!!!! :) :D :D

I don't like spiders much - insects I can handle, woodlice no problem, spiders, YUK!!
I don't really like public speaking, which is a shame as I often have to give presentations to a large group of customers. Anything where I've got to do some sort of preparation for it really gets me nervous. Once I've started I'm normally really relaxed and comfortable and quite confident.
If I have to give an impromptu session where I've little time to prep I have no concern at all.

Do I have fears? Many. Have I conquered them? Some. The one I am currently working on is the fear of being in front of groups of people. Helping out at the dojo and teaching the kids is a great way to work on this fear. I think I am slowly getting over it. I have other fears, many of them just paranoid delusions :) and anxiety based. You know they typical mother fears of children being attacked by bears or some gun-wielding maniac storming my kids school. Neither are likely to happen so the specific is not what I need to work on but the the level of anxiety that they cause.
Fear is necessary and unavoidable. Anyone who categorically states "I am not afraid", is either naive or has been horribly misled about the state of the world.

Sickness, food poisoning, flu...
I was reading the NIMH (Natl Institute of Mental Health) website on the self diagnoses thing, and I think I fit the obsessive compulsive and panic attacks victims to a tee. In fact, I've been to the ER cause I thought I was dieing. The food and stomach illness is exceptionally bad, to warrant my own daily hysteria induced mini illness where I think I am getting sick but never do. It's a terrible feeling, and I'm sure there are drugs to treat it, but I'm to lazy to go to a doctor (again) and money that can be spent on a therapist is better off going into something else, oh well.
I'm afraid of amounting to nothing before I die too. Factor in cancer, heart attack, car wreck, germs, scorpions, blindness, and a slew of other irrational fears, and I guess you could say I'm a pretty messed up person. I'm not afraid of heights, public speaking, or terrorism though :o

My friend Julian does NLP, he swears by it for all sorts of things. I'm thinking of getting into it, some of the stuff he's told me about is really interesting.

Well, I used to have a fear of heights but I'm able to cope with that now. As long as I don't stay too close the edge of a building I'm okay.
Conquered my fear of spiders in South Africa, when during our "Drifters" Tour a guide in Krueger Park asked someone in the group if they wanted to hold a Bamboo Spider...I volunteerd.
Some other things aren't fears but I feel uncomfortable with: going up to a girl in a pub or having to make B2B calls (like I did in my sales job).
