I would say that fella who called Yoda gay Which one would that be? There are have been several - and worse

If this is what you call a bad troll it just goes to show how few trolls we've had here recently - which is great news :D

Bah, that Yukimushu guy's a serious troll! (only joking mate) :D :D:D
I don't think that many bad trolls have been around recently, particularly since the shou shu-ers departed (where did they go, by the way?)

KickChick

They usually make a quick disappearance around here.... :D ;)

Maybe I'm superstitious but I think this thread is tempting fate! Cross your fingers everyone, hopefully the trolls won't be lured by our sense that we are troll free now.

A troll is someone who posts in a forum only to annoy others. That can be done in millions of ways but the most usual is posting flame bating posts.

example of troll posts.

"MMAers are just ruthless bloodlust mindless people who get in a ring only to satisfy their hunger for blood"

"What Is better karate or kung fu? It thing it's kung fu because karate sucks ass."

"I once saw a guy beat 25 people in a bar in Thailand and they where all left unconscious. He studied ninjitsu and half of the guys he beat where Thai boxers. Thai boxers suck "

"In my muay thai school we gather after class and go to a park and start kicking trees. My master once broke an oak with his shin"

and one of my favourites that comes to mind

"How can kick boxing compete with arts like ninjitsu ? It's just punches and kicks , it's so predictable"

here you go.

It depends. A commend may be annoying even if the poster doesn't want to annoy you. That's not trolling. If he does it is. Simple. (provided that you didn't do anything to annoy him first :) )

well, in that case then trolling is hard to define...anyone can claim they didn't mean to annoy others. so how exactly can you call someone a troll?

There is a ban list, unfortunately most of them were banned before I saw the posts or before I started here.

The hard part of this is that I don't know who's been kicked off or who just gave up and never came back. I remember a couple guys who would post in the IMA forum that internal arts were fake in just about every thread, simply to incite arguments. Haven't seen them for a while though...

You call him a troll when he makes comments like the ones i describe before, wich are obvious trolling. Not on other cases.

No need to cross fingers Mrs. Owt.... and no forum is ever troll-free btw. There will always be those posters that tend to upset the rest of the forum community. That is why there are alot of "special invitation" forums cropping up all over the net .... closing their borders to a select few and validating credentials before they are allowed to post their remarks.

Those of us who have experience with "open" discussion forums, and who have been online for years ... can spot a troll and consider them one of the many annoyances of using the internet.

As the saying goes, "You can't have a picnic without ants."

The only way to deal with trolls is to not react and to remind others not to reply to trolls (see my troll pic above)

When you try to reason with a troll, he wins. When you insult a troll, he wins. When you scream at a troll, he wins. The only thing that trolls can't handle is being ignored..... and to be banned!

Just remember..... trolls come in all shapes & disguises. One technique used by trolls to generate chaos is to pretend to be a well-liked person :D

Alas, this has become a one sided argument. The trolls have no one to speak for them. Even in the judiciary system someone represents the state, and someone represents the defendant. Who is there to defend the trolls?

I'm glad MAP is not that kind of forum! Maybe we do have to hunt down a troll every now and then, but the diversity of people we get here is worth it.

Trolls feed on attention. My advice on dealing with trolls:

Do. Not. Take. Bait. Ever!! :)

If MAP were that kind of forum would it be as fun?

But KT, taking bait is so much fun. It's like charging into a brawl when it's going down and cats are breaking things over each others heads. I think trolls succeed particularly because their bait is irresistable.
Don't you ever see a troll post and just say to yourself "I know this cat is trolling, but it's on now :woo: ".

No, it would be too insular and homogenous.

Nope -- I never take bait! :D

I think the worst one ever that was actually kicked off was Mr.Rat, who came back again and again masquerading as 'jeff bigglebam', etc. etc. He was an utter prat and the mods eventually had to get medieval on his ass and contact his ISP...

Ahahahahah, that's fantastic :D

I would say a troll is only a troll if he purposely posts to bait other people into arguing with him. Although in my experience, they only tend to do this if they have a personal affliction with the forum ie. they've been banned before or had a run-in with an admin and can't let it go.

As alex says, some people could get riled up at someones post, and it wouldn't necessarily be trolling. People should be careful not to overuse the word, just for people they don't agree with.

You are right KickChick. The best way to deal with a troll or troll like behaviours is to ignore them and not to rise to the bait when they are being deliberately malicious and childish. :)

I don't remember many trolls, but I remember my first experiance with a troll in the Karate forums. Anyone remember a "Karate Isn't any good" thread? Because it followed the rules of trolling to the letter.

You know what? I'm actually laughing. The advice to ignore trolls is so good. But .... its so very hard to do, and there are so many "trolloids" (who aren't actually trolls because their opinion is still valid despite the fact that it disagrees with ones own). Besides, I confess monumental ignorance of the "striking" arts and find all their threads informative -- even the trolls! I must mention one post though that made me shriek with laughter when one young man had "considered picking up aikido" to add to his skills. Now years ago I would have taken offence and called troll on him but these days....? Nah, not a troll, just funny. Trolls may be in the mind of the beholder, mind over matter, you dont mind, they dont matter.
