A RIDDLE THAT'LL KILL YOUR BRAIN! This is going to make you so MAD!
There are three words in the English language that end in "gry".
ONE is angry and the other is hungry.
EveryONE knows what the third ONE means and what it stands for.
EveryONE uses them everyday, and if you listened very carefully, I've
given you the third word.
What is it?
_______gry?

Cain

I think I figured it out but I will shut up for now, am sending you a PM

But I must say -

That's a **very** tricky question you fox! :D

YODA

Actually there are SIX words that end in GRY.

But I DO know the common answer to this riddle.

I won't spoil it for anyone else though :D

Here's a clue...

..... and if you listened very carefully......

Cain

Yep, You are correct :D

I remember this "riddle" circulating in emails a while back.... (and actually there are several different versions out there)....
more of a play on words that requires some thinking to solve!

pgm316

and the answer makes little sense really..........

KickChick
10-Apr-2003, 10:02 PM
Why don't we keep this thread going with another riddle ...
this could be fun!

The one who makes it sells it.
The one who buys it doesnt use it.
The one who uses it cant see it.
What is it?

KickChick
11-Apr-2003, 05:00 PM
hint?? http://www.computerpannen.com/cwm/contrib/duckman/dead.gif

Perhaps maybe we should solve the first??
... there are a couple versions out there .... so different answers. Which one is it?? http://www.coolquiz.com/trivia/didyouknow/gry.asp

Right!

Anyone else have a riddle to share??

How do you measure 3 quarters of an hour using the following? -

You have two pieces of string of equal length - both if burnt, last exactly one hour but each burn randomly/irregular rate though out the length.

YODA
21-Apr-2003, 05:26 PM
Hmmm......

They burn at unequal rates. But if you light one end it takes one hour - so if you light BOTH ends it will take exactly 30min.

So we have a way to time 60min and a way to time 30min.

Hmmmm.............

I'll give it some more thought when the beer starts to kick in :D

morphus

Stop messing about - did you have to do it so quick?

Took ME an age to get that one!:(

YODA
21-Apr-2003, 09:15 PM
I don't have it yet - but I'm on the case!!!!!!!!!!!!

YODA
21-Apr-2003, 09:44 PM
I got it I got it I got it I got it I got it I got it I got it I got it I got it I got it I got it I got it I got it I got it :D

I'm not gonna spoil it though - there may be more than 1 solution.

Tip - at some stage you'll need to light all 4 ends :D

Oh, it's nothing.

OK - try this one....

Three boxes are labeled "Apples", "Oranges" and "Apples and Oranges". Each label is incorrect. You may select only one fruit from one box (No feeling around or peeking permitted). How can you label each box correctly?

Fergie Boy
22-Apr-2003, 09:22 AM
You Label each box fruit.

Yoiu pick from the "Apples and Oranges" box, which tells you whether it is apples or oranges, if it is apples the box marched apples must be oranges as the one marked oranges can't have the oranges, making the box marched oranges holding oranges and apples.

Yeah your right FB, took me a while to get my head round that one!

Box labelled apples & orange, pull out apple, box must be apples only

Box labelled Oranges can’t be oranges and box 1 is apple, must be apple & orange

Box labelled Apples must be oranges!

:) Gave me a good mental workout Yoda!

Good one BlackRaven!

Surely someone will get this one right away!

Heres one....

A submarine boat is floating in a closed dock. Maintenance staff fills the ballast tanks with water until the submarine sinks to the bottom of the dock. Does the water level in the dock rise or fall? Why?

What's a submarine boat?

YODA
25-Apr-2003, 07:14 AM
It's one of those special boats that can go underwater :D

Fergie Boy
25-Apr-2003, 07:50 AM
Well the submarine will displace more water than it takes in I would thinkto raise the level of water, but it is a dock which is open to the sea or a river so any rise would be impercievable.

YODA
25-Apr-2003, 07:53 AM
It's a closed dock - and you're wrong :D

BlackRaven
25-Apr-2003, 08:51 AM
Wouldn't the water go up, as filling the sub with water would surely make it heavier (despite it being the water from outside going in).

pgm316
25-Apr-2003, 09:48 AM
The water would fall! The submarine will always weight the same (ie the metal) and thus displace the same amout of water, but when it submerges, some of the water is inside it. If that makes any sense :D

Slownsteady
25-Apr-2003, 10:30 AM
PGM, I don't know if I agree totally with that. We are not just talking about weight, we are talking about density and volume. Steel weighs about 7850 kg/cubic metre. Sea water - about 999 kg/ cubic metre. The 2 are not interchangeable.

I would have thought that the volume of the boat (submarine)comes into play as some empty space filled with air will still remain in the vessel when it is under water( unless the operators are fish people in which case why do we need a sub??). ie- the volume of the submersion chambers when filled with Sea Water would equate to the mass of the displaced volume of air in the vessel less the mass of the dry weight of the vessel.

But, this answer is too obvious - I am trying the lateral thinking cap, the earth is still flat, and 1 day we will sail off the edge.......

hmmmm.......

mmmmm

Wheres YODA with the answer :D

But, a large amount of the submarine is already submerged including most of the volume of air inside the submerine. And the submarine will have to take in a lot of water to drag the remaining cavity of air below sea level.

Slownsteady
25-Apr-2003, 11:03 AM
alot of water- but the relative densities of water and air are orders of magnitude apart.

earth calling yoda- come in Yoda.

We need the force!!

pgm316
25-Apr-2003, 01:52 PM
Sobered up a bit and I pretty sure I’ve worked it out! ;)

As the submarine takes on water, the water it takes in increases the amount the submarine displaces by an equal amount. So the water level stays the same! But as the submarine goes to the bottom its taking in more water which isn’t being displaced by anything, so then the water level in the dry dock goes down! :)

YODA
25-Apr-2003, 04:11 PM
pgm316 is correct :D

But that's just a submarine, not a submarine boat.

Surely a submarine boat would be a boat aboard or attached to a submarine.

How do you draw a triangle with all three corners being at right angles.

On a sphere :D

pgm316
06-May-2003, 11:45 AM
Being AT right angles as opposed to being right angles!?

If one corner is a right angles, thus the other 2 being at right angles to it?

YODA
06-May-2003, 11:55 AM
Like I said - on a sphere :D

All three angles are 90 degrees.

It does, however, "bend" the definition of "triangle" a little.

Just imagine drawing a triangle on the outside of a soccer ball.

All 3 corners would ne 90 degrees.

Draw 3 tangents in a circle intersecting each other.

My answer :D

Also can be done if you gotta circular/compass and a straight line ;)

|Cain|

YODA
06-May-2003, 06:44 PM
Nope.

Tangents are straight lines.

The best you will achieve is a 2 dimensional representation of a 3 dimension figuire (the answer)
