Hi! Yesterday I had my first real hands only session on the heavy bag.. It consisted of ten three minute long rounds, really hard! I have no real striking experience, as we don`t do any striking in TKD (WTF) .. When I was finished and sat down.. My right hand started shaking.. It lasted for about five minutes, it did not hurt or anything.. Is this normal ? Also, I was wondering if anyone really could explain in detail how the punches are performed correctly, since there is no boxing club here.. Pictures are welcome too :)
Thanks,
Fjaslokt

It's normal.
My hands shake after class for 5 years now , i had no side effects since today. I can still keep my hands perfectly still in my regular life if I want to.
don't be afraid of it. :)
I can find links on how to do the punches correctly but I strongly advise you to find somebody who knows and let' em show you once. It’s really different.
P.S forget it here you go boxing techniques- Click on boxing basics (http://www.balazsboxing.com/thegym/)

Thanks Alex! Maby I`ll put up a poster, say that I`m looking for a sparring partner.. Might work, who knows ? I`m also experiencing some pain in my wrist.. I assume that is normal too, since I haven`t been boxing before :) Doesn`t hurt at all while I`m boxing, just afterwards..

No pain in the wrist is something you should prevent from happening.
Use hand wraps and gloves (do you?). You can try taking one of them off after you get a bit comfortable punching. Do a good warmup before punching and also do some wrist streching.
Weights will also help a lot for strenghtening the wrists but you can live without them.

I use bag gloves, but no wraps.. I`ll start using them though! Actually I haven`t been warming up really good.. So I guess I have some things to work on :) What kind of weight exercises trains my wrists ?

Believe it or not almost anything will work your wrist a bit(in witch you're holding free weights or dumbells). The wrist holds the weight secured. The muscles on the wrist are always working.
Exersizes for biceps and forearms are the ones i think work the most. (like dumbell Curls or Dumbbell Wrist Curls)
see those
here for biceps (http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/exercises.php?MainMuscle=Biceps)
here for forearms (http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/exercises.php?MainMuscle=Forearms)
there are also specific wrist exersizes (like the one where you tie one end of a rope to a 1-3kg weight and in the other to a stick and you start rotating the stick to tie the rope around it and pull the weight up with your hands extended)

after my first muay thai lesson I could barely hold a water bottle to my mouth, my hands were so weak and shaky. completely normal. as for the wrists, well using wraps will stop it from hurting but wont cure it. I don't use wraps, but from my kung fu training where we did a fair few wrist strengthening exercises, I dont need to. go ask the kung fu guys on good wrist strengthening methods.

I dont use wrist wraps either, Ive only hurt my wrist once while punching, and that was last week (I think I just got lazy while on the bag or something). To strengthen your wrist try pushups on your knuckles, squeezing a tennis ball for a few minutes every day, or just hitting the bag will work too.

If your new to boxing then its definatly recommended using hand wraps. Even if your a pro then it's still important to wear the wraps! It'll save you in the long run. Especially when it comes to training on heavy bags!
You can pick up a pair of wrist wraps for next to nothing; because its always better to be safe than sorry.
Here's a nice simple tutorial on how to wrap your hands and wrists properly (http://www.ringside.com/store/hw_howto.asp).

^ Wot he said :)
You notice how even all pro boxers wrap their hands, there is a reason for that. Repeatedly hitting heavy objects damages the small bones in the hands.
a boxing heavy bag really falls into that category
cue the conditioning debate again ;)

Hmm, I tried a session without the gloves (not ordinary boxing gloves, gloves made for the heavy bag). Just used my wraps.. I can`t feel anything in my right wrist anymore.. All the pain is gone! But when I stopped hitting the bag, then I realised that my hands were bleeding! All the skin on my fingers were gone ;) wellwell.. Guess I`ll have to live with that then.. Will it allways be like that ?

Not if you punch correclty only the knuckles should make contact and the knuckles should be protected by the wraps.
I too get some bleeding on the fingers when i go bare handed , from bad shots , but not very mutch. The knuckles on the other hand ......

Then I really need to work on my technique! But my hevy bag gives in quite a bit where I hit.. So I am bound to contact it.. Should I tape it or something ?

Yea thats cool but not on the joints. Do it in a way that it doesnt effect the finger movement at all.
But it's better to put on gloves work on technique and when you feel comfortable take em off.

There is another excercise that can strengthen your wrist that we do in Wing Chun and it is called Huen Sau. Essentially it is simply turning the hand, and thats it. extend your arm with stright with you palm flat, rotate your hand until your hand is vertical, and repeat. do this 50 times a day on both arms, and i guareentee in a couple of months you will notice a difference.

Hehe, I meant taping the heavy bag ;) Most of the heavy bags I have seen have been taped on the head hight.. How come ?
