I think they're a good band. I also think, with the personalities involved, they're the next great rock 'n' roll trainwreck waiting to happen. Still, as long as the music's this good on the way, I'm happy to be along for the ride

Drugs! Booze! Kung Fu!
Just some MA-related info on the band that I just read.....

Scott Weiland, Dave Kushner and Duff McKagan ("Velvet Revolver") all do martial arts together claiming that it brings them to a whole other intensity level.

Duff has trained in martial arts for a longer time. They are all now practicing a form of Kung Fu basically, an Indonesian martial art. But it all started when Scott first joined the band ... they all went up to Washington to study together. Scott needed to get away from LA, to get away from the trappings (drugs & booze).

"That's right," Weiland affirms. "It all came to a head after I was arrested for narcotics possession, and the day after was when I really fell to pieces, so to speak. I had always looked to Duff as a sort of mentor. I was very interested in how he got sober through martial arts. So I asked him for help."

Duff himself got sober through martial arts, so he took Weiland twelve-hundred miles away from LA, up to these mountains to see this martial arts, kung fu master that Duff knew. Duff had a bag full of drugs that this doctor gave him to wean Scott shooting him up a couple of times a day.

Scott came out of that experience clean, winning his wife & kids back.
If you've seen the 'Fall To Pieces' video, the fight they have is all part of the "experience" and then when Duff is shown hugging him, he is more or less saying: 'It's okay, you've got yourself through it, it's going to be alright "'

Weiland claims experience up in the mountains was a real purge for him. They were being instructed by a master in about six martial-art forms, and his wife also a master in t'ai chi. Theywould get up in the morning and meditate and go into t'ai chi, and then there was a schooling session, and then there was some running, and they would finish with a hard training session later on in the day.

I've never really listened to them, but I'm quite a fan of G'n'R, so I'll probably like them. That MA story just put them up a notch in my rankings as it is :D

Last night's gig was pretty cool. The support were ok (The Datsuns) but not great - sounded like they played the same 2 songs over and over - no change of pace at all.

Despite coming on stage 45min late Velvet Revolver RAWKED! The volume kept bombing out my hearing aids but apart from that - excellent show. Lots of TV cameras around too so we may get to see this on telly :D They did a few Guns & Roses covers too!

Man that Slash dude can play guitar!

Scott Weiland was better than I thought he was going to be - definately "front man" quality with his Jagger-ish strutting about etc. However, it was very clear from the intro, stage performance and encore's etc that this is very much Slash's band.

Great Gig! :D

I like their stuff, some of it is a little weak though, a little too much to the rock formula. As for the Axl thing, whatever you think of the man, he wrote brilliant songs and had the vocal range to carry them off.

The two G&R covers chosen last night were obvious "low vocal register" choices - "It's So Easy" and "Mr Browstone"

Would I have prefered to have seen Axl up there last night with the rest of the guys? On reflection - I think so yes.

Great gig though :D

They came on late for us too. Drama queens. It was a good show though, and I agree about the Datsuns, I wasn't impressed. I also agree, it's definately Slash's band, he's who most people were there to see.

I grew up listening to G'N'R, even did the saddo thing of going to record shop when they opened 2 hours early for the release of the use your illusion albums!!! Thats why i was excited to first hear the velvet revolver stuff, must admit i was a little dissapointed at first but they have growm on me a bit, but do think that the singer lacks a little something in his voice.

Make that 3 G'n'R covers. You forgot Used To Love Her (another low vocal register). The covers went down best of all. I am sure that during the drum solo he also started playing Paradise City just before going into Brownstone.

They are supposed to be going into the studio after the tour, so it will be interesting to hear what format the new stuff takes. Having heard 5 tracks now off the G'n'R album Chinese Democracy, the 2 albums could end up going against one another (if C.D. ever gets a release!!).

An excellent gig, that would have been much better with a later (and better) support. The main group though couldn't be faulted in their stage performance, and Slash is just a living Legend.

Saw 'em last week in Dublin and again they were late on stage but once they kicked off they absolutely rocked the place. Slash is an out and out rock god!!!! Weiland is a train wreck waiting to happen but was bloody entertaining none the less!

I think Matt and Duff train with Benny Urquidez. I saw an interview where Duff mentioned he had found kickboxing and mentioned The Jet and he's also thanked on the liner notes of the album.

There was also a clip from one of Benny's fights during one song at the gig!

Takes me back - one of the first MA seminars I went to was with Benny -1986 I think!

Got to agree. Axl Rose was a great songwriter/singer... As of Velvet Revolver... OOOOH YEAH ! They are awesome ! Their best song must be Sucker Train Blues or You got no right. Slither is also truley amazing.

Glad to see MAP members from around the UK supported the tour, you'll be glad to hear I didn't let you down and went to watch them in Cardiff. For around 60 minutes of the gig, I was less than 10 feet away from slash. The best thing about it for me was to see all the oldie rockers lol ;)
