has anybody ever bought those teaching tapes on self defense?
I had mentioned in my first post that a health problem won't allow me to participate in anything that is the least bit physically strenuous. Problem is before I got sick I LOVED BEING ACTIVE!! :(

Now being forced to be very inactive, I tend to get depressed a lot. I saw some tapes advertise teaching pressure points and hold for self defense. I think I could handle that (I HOPE). But I don't want to spend a lot of money on something that doesn't do what is says. Has any body ever seen any of these Videos that could tell me if they are any good or not? Thanks for any help you can give me!! :)

Hi Lasso,

Welcome to the forum.

I obviously don't know the nature of your illness, and can therefor make no assumptions, but it struck a chord with me.

I contracted Bronchitis and Pneumonia a while back, resulting in me being Chronically Asthmatic. Then I was clever enough to snap one of my Achilles Tendons while training.

It led me to question the validity of trying to keep up and/or excel my juniors, and look for more effective/less strenuous ways of training.

These days I've given up leaping about like a maniac throwing jumping spinning kicks and such, and am trying to learn Wing Chun, which is physically undemanding, and Eskrima which is more mobile, and absolutely bottomless as a wellspring of skill.

I guess what I'm saying is, look for a different training environment than you had.

While Videos are a good resource for ideas, I don't feel you will ever get the *hit* you are looking for from them.

Come back to me on this, even by PM if you prefer.

I have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome - severely, I'm sorry to say. Any martial arts would be out of the question right now. I have severe dizzy spell if I just stand up real fast or try jumping or anything along that line - even standing to long. I also get "Brain Fog" badly at times. Brain Fog is where you can't think clearly, so I couldn't focus on the lessons. I was hoping I could practice with the Videos when my head was clear enough preferably sitting when ever possible.
I was in American Tia kwon do - I don't think the Martial Arts get any more low impact then that. But I do remember learning something about pressure points and muscle manipulation when I was in class, so I think I could at least learn some self defense hold and pressure points. I just need to find A WAY to learn. The Video's just sound like a possibility right now. I hope

OK, Is there anybody who has actually tried the videos? I found a bunch of them but I want something that I can actually learn from. I found some for jujitsu, basic-self defense, pressure points, blocks and some advanced stuff supposedly put out by cops. Can anybody tell me what actually works...remembering please, that my physical abilities are rather restricted at this time. I don't want a teaching video that is physically demanding.

Part of why I am trying this is because of my past physical limitations. Before I got CFS, I was VERY active and loved it. I am trying to find a way to get back to a little of that activity in a field that I found out years ago that I really enjoyed.
